The proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) Act will hopefully chart a new course for the local film industry, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking to reporters after attending the Film Directors Association Malaysia (FDAM) Convention on Saturday (July 6), Fahmi noted however that that the amendments are not ready to be brought to Parliament yet.

00:00There are about 10 booths here, and each booth has a different kind of sales.
00:09During the ADM convention, I went to see the events that were held.
00:17And I found that it was very good in terms of content.
00:23There were booths with KWSP, Pekeso, Tekun, and others to help film directors understand and get the benefits.
00:45I also went to see the post-production studio that will be opened soon.
00:55It is the first post-production studio with the Dolby Atmos status.
01:03The opening date will be announced soon.
01:10I am very happy and proud to see the post-production studio,
01:17because it is the only studio in Malaysia with Dolby Atmos accreditation.
01:26At the same time, I saw other activities such as pitching and casting.
01:34This shows me that if FINAS cooperates with a body like FDAM,
01:42more activities like this can be carried out on a larger scale.
01:47This gives more opportunities for film directors, film producers, actors, and others involved in this ecosystem
01:58to get jobs, opportunities to carry out projects,
02:02and opportunities to know for sure what projects they want to get involved in.
02:10I would like to thank FINAS and FDAM for their good efforts today.
02:16Is there anything you would like to say to our film directors?
02:19We have tried our best.
02:21Not only for the actors, but also for the people behind the scenes.
02:33For the cast and crew, we have started with Pekeso.
02:41It has helped more than 4,500 film directors.
02:49At the same time, FINAS is currently discussing with KWSP
02:55to find out what can be done to help film directors.
03:01Because we have found that often those who become stars,
03:06they will get benefits today.
03:08But the best thing is if they can save a little for tomorrow and the day after.
03:17There are a few other things that are still being discussed.
03:21Importantly, from a legal point of view,
03:24we are in the process of approving FINAS's document
03:27to enable further improvements.
03:30The document is a bit different from today's reality.
03:39For example, we no longer talk about films.
03:42Everything has become digital.
03:44Today, it includes many other sectors that were previously unthinkable.
03:51I have asked for a team to provide it.
03:54But the process is still ongoing.
03:56We are not yet ready to bring it to Parliament.
04:00For film directors, there are a few benefits that can be received now.
04:06And for the ecosystem as a whole,
04:09we hope that when we move the FINAS document,
04:12there will be a new goal for Malaysian films.
