00:06:21Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
00:06:50Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched
00:07:09were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
00:07:24Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:07:46O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
00:08:17And now, welcome back. From Dancing with the Stars, our host, Alfonso Ribeiro.
00:08:25Happy Fourth of July, America!
00:08:40Yes, I am so honored to have been asked to host this year's a Capital Fourth.
00:08:47Now, growing up in New York, this day was always so important to my family.
00:08:52But wherever you're from, North, South, East, West, what we all have in common is a respect and love for this great country of ours.
00:09:00Immense gratitude for the opportunities it has given our families and a shared dream of a better tomorrow for everyone in our nation.
00:09:08It's why hundreds of thousands of people, an American portrait of red, white, and blue, are here for tonight's festivities,
00:09:16ready for a night of music and dancing, fun and fireworks.
00:09:20You know, wait, let me rephrase that. For the best fireworks in the land, am I right?
00:09:26Yeah, well, they've come here to D.C. from every state in the country.
00:09:32We can see them from across the Potomac, at the Lincoln Memorial, on the National Mall,
00:09:41and here on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol, united in their love of country.
00:09:49Now, united, that's such an important word, not just today, but every day.
00:09:54And what makes this day even more fun is that we're joined by two very special friends of mine from Sesame Street, Elmo and Cookie Monster.
00:10:03Hi!
00:10:08Hello.
00:10:09Hi.
00:10:11Yeah.
00:10:12Oh, Mr. Alfonso, hi.
00:10:14Hi.
00:10:15We're so happy to be here.
00:10:16Yeah, look at all these people.
00:10:19Yeah.
00:10:20Whoa.
00:10:21Even the cat couldn't count them all.
00:10:23Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:24Come on, everybody, wave your flags.
00:10:27Yeah!
00:10:29Whoa, look at all these waving flags.
00:10:32Wow.
00:10:33Pretty awesome, right?
00:10:34Now, Elmo and Cookie Monster, we are so happy to have friends like you here celebrating with us.
00:10:40Thank you, guys.
00:10:41And also joining us tonight, as always, on a Capitol Fourth, is the National Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Jack Everly.
00:10:49Oh, ho, ho.
00:10:50Hi, Mr. Jack.
00:10:52Hi, Elmo.
00:10:53Elmo, did you know the National Symphony Orchestra was just nominated for the Gramophone Orchestra of the Year?
00:11:00So from all of us to all of you, happy birthday, USA.
00:11:04Yeah, ho, ho.
00:11:07Thank you, Jack.
00:11:08Are you guys ready for more music?
00:11:10Oh, yeah.
00:11:11Yes, we are.
00:11:12Well, our next performer is not only the lead singer of the Go-Go's, the most successful all-female rock band of all time,
00:11:19she has an amazing solo career.
00:11:22So get on your feet and get ready to dance, because here is Belinda Carlyle.
00:11:26Yeah, ho, ho, ho, ho.
00:11:28Oh, boy.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:46See the people walking down the street
00:11:49Following the spots on all the beat
00:11:53They don't know where they want to go
00:11:55But they're walking in time

00:12:15They can't wait to hang out and be cool

00:12:27They got the beat
00:12:30Yeah, they got the beat
00:12:32Come on.
00:12:52But the music really makes us dance
00:13:01Through the party puts us in a trance
00:13:04Who wants to say just give us a chance
00:13:07When they find a line

00:14:31Now that I'm away
00:14:34I always try to stay
00:14:36Tumors of death might, you won't be in
00:14:44When you looked at me, I should have a run
00:14:48But I thought it was just for fun
00:14:55I feel strong, and I'm not so strong
00:15:03I should have known all along that time would tell
00:15:10A week without you, start up again

00:26:25There was a little girl in the front row who did every step, that was amazing!
00:26:29Also, now don't forget, for those of you hosting a Capital Fourth viewing party at home and all across the nation,
00:26:35post your pics with the hashtag July4thPBS.
00:26:39Now, the great Neil Diamond is a Capital Fourth favorite,
00:26:42a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has given us so many hits,
00:26:47songs like Cracklin' Rosie, Sweet Caroline, and one that means so much to Neil personally.
00:26:52The song, America, is dedicated to his grandmother,
00:26:56who came here on what Neil calls the great voyage to freedom.
00:27:00And those are just a few of the great songs you're about to enjoy
00:27:03from the Broadway cast of A Beautiful Noise,
00:27:06The Neil Diamond Musical!
00:27:08Woo!
00:27:17Ah, Cracklin' Rosie, get on board

00:31:38Today they're coming to America
00:31:42Today they're coming to America
00:31:46Today they're coming to America
00:31:49Today, they're coming to America
00:32:15Where it began
00:32:19I can't begin to know it
00:32:23But then I know it's growing strong
00:32:30Was in the spring
00:32:34Then spring became the summer
00:32:38Would have been nearly time alone
00:32:44Hands
00:32:48Touching hands
00:32:52Reaching out
00:32:56Touching me
00:32:59Touching you
00:33:03Sweet Caroline
00:33:08But time never seems so good
00:33:13Oh, I think I
00:33:19Could believe they never would
00:33:23But now I
00:33:39We can't lie
00:33:43But time never seems so good
00:33:47So good, so good
00:33:50I am living time
00:33:54I feel they never would
00:33:58Sweet Caroline
00:34:03Sweet Caroline
00:34:13Sweet Caroline
00:34:43Sweet Caroline
00:35:13Babyface
00:35:31If I could lose the stars
00:35:35Who would die for you
00:35:39I found it on my heart
00:35:44So you could see the truth
00:35:48That there's love every time
00:35:53It's everything it seems
00:35:57But for now I find
00:36:01It's only in my dreams
00:36:05That I could change the world
00:36:10And I would be the sunlight in your universe
00:36:14And you would think my love was worth
00:36:17So little, baby, if I could
00:36:21Change the world
00:36:34If I could begin
00:36:38Even for a day
00:36:42I'd take you as my queen
00:36:47I'd have it no other way
00:36:51And our love would prove
00:36:55King don't think I play
00:36:59Children be a fool
00:37:03Wishing for that day
00:37:07That I could change the world
00:37:12And I would be the sunlight in your universe
00:37:16And you would think my love was worth
00:37:19So little, baby, if I could
00:37:23Change the world
00:37:33If I could change the world
00:37:38I would be the sunlight in your universe
00:37:43And you would think my love was worth
00:37:46So little, baby, if I could
00:37:50Change the world
00:37:52Baby, if I could
00:37:55Change the world
00:37:57Baby, if I could
00:37:59Change the world
00:38:00Baby, if I could
00:38:02Change the world
00:38:04Baby, if I could
00:38:06Change the world
00:38:08If I could
00:38:10If I could
00:38:12Change the world
00:38:14Baby, if I could
00:38:16Change the world
00:38:18Baby, if I could
00:38:24The world
00:38:31The world

00:51:35To understand the merits and the failings
00:51:39Maybe I was afraid before
00:51:42But I'm not afraid anymore

01:08:18As she leaps against the dam
01:08:25Givin' up her small space
01:08:31Shedding her strength on the floor
01:08:38Twenty-five on six to five
01:08:49Twenty-five on six to five
01:08:57Staring blindly into space
01:09:04Jumping up to splash my face
01:09:10Was it just a mistake?
01:09:17Wonder how much I could take
01:09:24Should I try to do some more?
01:09:31Twenty-five or sixty-five

01:27:18A Capital Fourth is made possible by the Boeing Company.
01:27:24This Fourth of July, we come together to celebrate our nation.
01:27:32Honoring our history and enjoying the time spent with loved ones as we look ahead to creating great memories.
01:27:42We stand united and celebrate together.
01:27:48And by the American Hospital Association.
01:28:18And by the National Park Service, Department of the Army, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,
01:28:33and by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you. Thank you.
01:28:40This is The Great American Recipe, a celebration of foods from across the country to around the globe.
01:28:46Steeped in years of tradition.
01:28:51America is the land of immigrants.
01:28:53And so you think about all of the people coming from different countries, bringing their customs with them, bringing their foods with them, bringing their recipes with them.
01:29:01I feel like we're going to go on a cross-country voyage. Sign me up.
01:29:05Being born and raised in Chicago, you can go to a German restaurant, you can go to Chinatown, Greektown, you can get so many different tastes in such a small geographic area.
01:29:15American food to me is a blend of cultures.
01:29:18It's so eclectic. America really is a melting pot.
01:29:21Having noodles as a blank canvas is the best way to showcase the different countries, regions, cultures of the home cooks.
01:29:29American food means eating what's local to you.
01:29:35I think a part of becoming American is sharing your traditions with others.
01:29:39My dad's family is from Libya, so I cook Libyan Sephardic Jewish food.
01:29:45Learning about different people's history and culture through food is like the beauty of American cuisine.
01:29:50It's celebrating our differences and cooking with love.
01:29:54This is amazing.
01:29:58I automatically go back to Thanksgiving. Our Thanksgiving table, yes, we always have the turkey, we have mashed potatoes.
01:30:04But we also would add chow mein, we'd add fried rice, which is not typical.
01:30:09And to me, that's what I view American food as, is what is built here in the States and then the little additions that we add into it from our own backgrounds and cultures.
01:30:18It has been such a joy to watch you cook because it is part of our unique American story, all of us together.
01:30:25That's who we are. We're a people of so many different recipes, so many cultures, so many stories.
01:30:31And I think that's what makes us great.
