Biden blasts landmark Supreme Court ruling on Trump immunity

President Joe Biden warns that the US Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity sets a 'dangerous precedent' that Donald Trump could exploit if elected in November. The conservative-dominated court ruled that presidents have 'absolute immunity' from criminal prosecution for "official acts" while in office but can still face penalties for 'unofficial acts.'

00:00This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America.
00:12Each, each of us is equal before the law.
00:16No one, no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States.
00:21With today's Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity, that fundamentally changed.
00:29For all, for all practical purposes, today's decision almost certainly means that there
00:34are virtually no limits on what a president can do.
00:38This is a fundamentally new principle, and it's a dangerous precedent.
00:42Nearly four years ago, my predecessor sent a violent mob to the U.S. Capitol to stop
00:49the peaceful transfer of power.
00:51We all saw it with our own eyes.
00:54We sat there and watched it happen that day.
00:57Back on the police, the ransacking of the Capitol, a mob literally hunting down the
01:04House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, gallows erected to hang the Vice President, Mike Pence.
01:11I think it's fair to say it was one of the darkest days in the history of America.
01:15Now the man who sent that mob to the U.S. Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction
01:21for what happened that day.
01:23The American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election.
01:28The public has a right to know the answer about what happened on January 6th before
01:34they asked to vote again this year.
01:36Now, because of today's decision, that is highly, highly unlikely.
01:42It's a terrible disservice to the people of this nation.
01:45I know I will respect the limits of the presidential powers I have for three and a half years,
01:51but any president, including Donald Trump, will now be free to ignore the law.
01:57I concur with Justice Sotomayor's dissent today.
02:01She hears what she said.
02:02She said, in every use of official power, the president is now a king above the law.
02:09With fear for our democracy, I dissent, end of quote.
02:14Associate the American people dissent.
02:18I dissent.
02:21I dissent.
