00:00But first a debate. Yeah, Ronnie James. Where will he go tonight in the 2024 NBA draft?
00:07Might it be Los Angeles. We wanted to hear from you. It's time for faith the public
00:18Smooth Friezo our producer pulling double duty today. Joe Friezo also on the sticks. What was the big deal with that though?
00:26He said he wasn't great at stinger animation. So we wanted we have it every day though. Who does it then Matt?
00:31Malala who does a great job?
00:35Friezo struggling back there
00:37That's not what I said by all accounts. Come on, man. His mom watches every day. Hey mom. What's up?
00:43Yours are freezes to everybody
00:47Here we are into our number three the question at sports grid on Twitter
00:51Well the Lakers draft Ronnie James in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft simply put yes
00:58Or no more than 200 votes. The people want to have the Bronnie James conversation and about
01:0458% say yes, Ronnie James will be drafted by the LA Lakers tonight in round number two, which way did you vote?
01:11Do I voted? Yes, and also bet that way too to put a little bit money behind now
01:15Here's the issue I'm having with this right because you're just trying to forget about if you have insider information or not
01:20Let's just say most people don't at this point. We could say definitively. Hey, look who talked to Rich Paul last night
01:25It's Lakers or nobody. You can just lay the house on it
01:27It was at that price plus 100 last week before we started to see his actual draft status on the move from 40 and a half
01:34Up to that mid 50s. Now that we see that here at the fan little sports book
01:37We'll see if that actually that bet comes back today
01:39But having said that it's one of those bets where I didn't put a lot of money down
01:42But it's if it does turn on like why did I bet more money on that?
01:45Do you know what I mean?
01:47Feels like all you've been hearing all along is it's going to be the Lakers
01:51He's not a sought-after player in the draft. You want to keep your top player?
01:54Maybe the top player in the NBA happy in LeBron James. So you're going to draft him. It doesn't matter where it is
02:00It's just going to the Lakers. But then again, it's one of those going like well, that's why I only put about maybe
02:05Let's just say 25 to $50 on that wager because it turns out that do Orlando Magic trade up in the one to get him in
02:11All behind the scenes Ronnie goes. Yeah, you know what it was always it didn't have to be the Lakers
02:14I just wanted to go to a team which it is going to fit my needs
02:17But I just feel it has to be Los Angeles because the one thing we talked about with La to it is star power
02:23Say what you want
02:24this is a draft where a player some people are saying shouldn't be drafted but is getting the majority of the talk time because of
02:29How big a star he is and also, you know
02:32Opening night if Ronnie James is on the Lakers, even if he doesn't play
02:36It's a great talking point that every station including ours is going to talk about and let's talk about those
02:42Talking points the first two odds that you could bet in the NBA draft
02:46Who would be the number one overall pick and where would Ronnie James go and the Lakers were the favorites even then?
02:53Right before the draft started last night still no updated second round prices on the fan dual sports book
02:58We hope those come out in the next few hours
03:01Ronnie James was favored to go to LA not even an even money at minus
03:06Minus 165 his draft position prop the over under
03:1154 and a half in the over has the juice at minus 158
03:16Conveniently betting the over will lead you to the Lakers who draft 55th overall
03:21The Suns do have the second best price to draft Ronnie James
03:24They have the 56th pick tonight after training yesterday as Denver moved up to 22nd to get to Ron Holmes
03:31And Phoenix moved back at 28th. They drafted Ryan Dunn and now have picked number 56 tonight
03:38You see the numbers but a conversation piece all
03:42Along people wondering about the prospect of Ronnie James could the player compete on?
03:47this next level in the association after only 25 games and frankly a
03:53Disappointing season at USC, of course
03:56He dealt with the medical condition and the cardiac arrest that happened during summer workouts a year ago as he was getting ready for his freshman
04:03campaign at
04:04Southern Cal so only 25 games in his freshman season just averaging shy of five points per game
04:10But let me say this
04:12College stats and production is not the only reason a player is selected in the NBA draft
04:18AJ Johnson who went 23rd last night who was or is from the States originally committed to
04:25Texas played in the NBL in the Australian
04:29Professional Basketball League averaged less than eight minutes per game and only 26 games and averaged two
04:35Points per game look at those stats and that guy was a first-round pick
04:39This is not slander of AJ Johnson
04:41Of course the Milwaukee Bucks feel confident in the projection and the development of this prospect
04:46That's where Ronnie James can have the same sort of consideration if we get past the name
04:51Now also, we're taking a look at and these are random circumstances just say not random circumstances
04:57Rich Paul's put this out here. Usually when you get a second round pick, it's easier for the NBA team to go
05:01Okay, we're gonna pick a guy with some upside here. We need the developer, right?
05:04So it's gonna get a two-way contract
05:05Which means if he comes into training camp in September lights it up
05:09It's gonna be on the basketball team on under an NBA contract
05:11But he can also be sent down to the G League which means he can get his playing time in and feel much more
05:17Comfortable and work on his game Rich Paul's put it out there that yeah
05:20If he's going in the second round, it doesn't matter
05:22He's getting a one-way contract to the NBA which puts a lot of teams business saying well
05:26We probably could have taken him here and see if it would have worked out
05:29But we don't have room on our roster to guarantee an NBA contract or maybe even like a team like a Knicks
05:33You're looking to shed some of that weight. Hey, we'll take Bronnie James in round number two. Oh, no, he's gonna be on the NBA
05:38Roster he's gonna count right away against the salary cap
05:40That's what I'm interested to see where that pant that just feels like the Lakers would be willing to say
05:4515th man on the roster
05:47Guaranteed NBA contract right make it happen here is gonna be with his father
05:50That's where all signs are pointing for me or somebody like the Knicks perhaps or picks 31 through 54
05:57Causes a little chaos on night number two of the NBA draft and they select Ronnie James either as JY put it to force
06:05the hand of LeBron James and the LA Lakers or maybe they believe in
06:11Ronnie James and LeBron has said all
06:13Along in the last five years how he wanted to keep playing into his 40th year on this earth to have the chance
06:20Just the opportunity to play in an NBA game alongside his son
06:25Ronnie James if he doesn't go to LA with LeBron being a free agent this offseason, but all accounts
06:3399.9999% he is going to re-sign in Los Angeles
06:37Would he consider the idea of going somewhere else and then the prospect of Bronte James is only amplified
06:44But again as the public is saying nearly 58% and as the odds makers would agree with a minus
06:50165 number more than likely Ronnie James is going to Los Angeles
06:55The Lakers have the number 55 overall pick the draft position prop was 54 and a hook for Bronte James at close
07:03Yesterday that is what I believe will happen and DRS but it's so fascinating about now night number two again for the first time since
07:111989 we have a two-night event for the NBA draft. We have attention to be paid to this second round
07:19Yeah
07:19That's not a shot at any of the prospects that are still on the board like a Kyle
07:22Filipovsky a Tyler Kolick or anybody else?
07:26But Bronte James was the story or one of the main stories of the NBA draft even before the opening round
07:31And he still is available entering round number two
07:34Yeah, and also with something you equate it like to say to the NFL draft where they put like the Stars up there
07:38They get their own little montage
07:39Bronte James is a montage on ESPN and we didn't we knew he probably wasn't going in round number one
07:44Here's the interesting part about the business of it
07:46Let's just say and I use this team just for fictitious terms. You're Linda magic draft them in the second round and they go, okay
07:51We're not gonna give you a one-way deal. We're gonna call your bluff
07:54Well, like Bronte Jim most players coming like look I need the paycheck. I'd get my career started
07:58Yeah, Bronte James Flazer doesn't play in the NBA
08:00He is gonna be fine set for life. It's no big deal. So that would add intrigue and also
08:04I don't even know where the options go if it's like he's only getting a one-way deal
08:07No, we're giving him a two-way does go back in the draft next year. Does he play overseas at that point?
08:11There's so many fun angles to take a look at you know
08:13What the funnest angle is making some money here and having them just drafted to the Lakers
08:17So we all can cash in some tickets. It was an even money price earlier this week
08:21It was at closed last night before the opening round minus 165
08:26Will we see that updated number and price before round number two that remains to be seen but the odds elsewhere around the association
08:33Have updated
08:3631 through 58 that's round number two of the 2024
08:40NBA draft we will continue our sports grid NBA draft special coverage live right here later this afternoon 4 p.m
08:47Eastern time was with round number two is set to get underway from New York City
08:52Kevin Walsh James Young Scott Perel and Mike Carver all have a hand in the coverage
08:56We get you set for the second round
08:59Ronnie James is going to be the main talking point and I do want to finish with one thing about Ronnie James and just kind
09:05Of round number two in general. You've heard me say this a few times
09:091989 that's when the NBA draft condensed to only two
09:13Rounds so in the 35 years since we have only seen 21
09:19Total second-round selections make an NBA all-star team most notably in the last decade guys like Nikola Jokic
09:27Who was the 41st overall pick back in?
09:302016 or Draymond Green for the Golden State Warriors some second-round selections that you well know around the
09:37Association all of that to say not many of the picks here in the second round will amount to being an all-pro
09:43An all-star somebody who makes a notable contribution to their organization and that's okay
09:49Which also means the RS get the Lakers to use their second round pick on Bronte James
09:54It's not a disaster missing out on draft capital. No, and that's exactly the point here
09:58I think you could feel even better about Bronte James to the Lakers because
10:02You got somebody that you probably did not think was available in round number one an immediate impact player
10:08Which can soften the blow to say, okay
10:09We can take a flyer in the second round, even though we always thought Bronte James was probably going in the second round
10:14There's no pressure to say. Oh we whiffed or
10:17I'm not going to opt into my contract unless my son is a first-round draft pick here like some
10:22Ungodly pressure that LeBron James might have put on the front office for the Los Angeles Lakers
10:26So I think it's a perfect scenario for Bronte James in the second round here to go towards the Lakers
10:31But if we are looking at some of those players that are available
10:33I'm gonna ask you this question because one guy that popped up continuously on most of these mock drafts was Tyler Koelick
10:38Was there a reason why he's slipping?
10:40I don't know. He was a wonderful college basketball player that you figure plug-and-play in the NBA
10:44So that's part of it
10:45Let me just correct myself by the way before we dive in to call it Nicola Jokic drafted in 2014
10:50Not in 2016 famously or infamously during a Taco Bell commercial
10:54That will probably not be the case tonight because it is a two-night event now in the NBA draft Tyler Koelick the 2023
11:01Big East player of the year one of the best point guards in the country so influential to everything
11:07Marquette wanted to do the last few seasons that of course a season ago not this previous season, but now two years
11:142022-23 ended in a biggie's regular season title and tournament title under
11:19Shaka smart, but they were still a two-seed this past year in the NCAA tournament as well
11:24I really thought Donnie and there were some other spots last night for our draft special that featured odds of
11:30Koelick being the favorite to be the number 23 overall pick which is what the Bucs had
11:36Maybe it was just the Milwaukee connection that made it seem like a natural transition for Koelick
11:41But also the idea that Milwaukee needs backcourt depth and somebody to place behind
11:46Damien Lillard as that backup point guard instead they go for AJ Johnson the development project out of
11:53Australia, I'm not entirely sure why he has slid but many considered him on the cusp of
12:00The first round if he's drafted in the first five picks tonight
12:02I wouldn't consider it the greatest upset or the greatest slide we've ever seen in the NBA draft
12:07Yeah
12:07No
12:07And I just wanted to make that because this was one of the guys that with Marquette throughout the regular season a lot of people
12:13Are saying like you know what I might spend some money here on a futures wager on Marquette to win and then even more intriguing
12:18Way he got injured was what are we going to get back because on a day-to-day basis when we were breaking down the Big East
12:22Tournament is like oh, I wonder if he's going to come back and even John Rolstein coming on the program
12:26You know what I think they're gonna hold him out to the big dance
12:28Yeah, and then you were still trying to say well if I get regular season healthy colic
12:31I might be getting a discount on that so he's one of those players that can certainly drive
12:35They can score it can distribute and also obviously shoot it
12:37I thought it was interesting the Bucks back on the clock with the third pick of this second round 33rd overall
12:42Maybe they would go to the veteran after taking the project in AJ Johnson
12:46If he still is available the biggest slide out of the opening round that was Kyle Filipowski
12:51Who was in the green room last night in Brooklyn never easy to be in the green room when you're expected?
12:56Where was he though in the not in the green room?
12:58But where was he projected to go like what were most so other other sports book operators?
13:03We love the fan dual sports book
13:04Yeah, other sports book operators had his draft position prop at 23 and a half and the over had the juice
13:09So the over had the juice 24 or later, but not in to the second round probably late
13:15They're in the first round in fact the New York Knicks who were originally slated to draft 24th and 25th
13:22Flip was the favorite to go in both of those spots not a minus money favorite around a plus 450 or five to one number
13:29But there was some thought even conversation here with Kev and JY that that would make sense for the Knicks of course financial
13:36Restrictions not allowing the New York Knicks to do that so Kyle Filipowski
13:41Uncharacteristically still on the board again. I think he hears his name called early tonight
13:46Probably pick 31 maybe pick 32 the Raptors first up followed by the Jazz yeah
13:51No, it should be interesting to see where he goes at that point, but it's always you know
13:54There's risers, and there's followers in every draft and certainly it's tough scene because you're sort of graded on you know
14:00Where am I gonna go and what you can tell your friends about but also?
14:03It's a guaranteed contract when you slip into the second round yes
14:05You could still get a two-way contract or you can get that one-way deal
14:09But now you take a look at also you know what you love Ben the chip on the shoulder guys
14:13Coming in to say you know what I thought I was better than where I was drafted
14:16Let me prove it to my new organization, and we'll find that if that matters here with him as well
14:19So another guy that was in BK last night Johnny Furphy who if you look at him
14:24Maybe doesn't look like an NBA player just yet
14:26But he's young out of Australia played one year in Lawrence at KU became a national
14:31Sensation on the first Saturday of February in the top five till inside the fog against Houston
14:37He put up 17 points hit three triples
14:40He is an undeveloped project, but a great shooter and does have that upside here in a round
14:46Number two a couple of other college names that you might have heard a Dambona the big man out of UCLA
14:53Bobby Clinton who has an interesting draft prospect career played two seasons ago
15:00Collegiately here in the States at Wake Forest last year the native of Sweden goes to the NBL the Professional League in
15:08Australia he will probably hear his name called in the first five of the second round tonight
15:11Yeah
15:11No a lot of these dreams are going to be made tonight and also it's gonna be a topsy-turvy
15:15Second round because it's not as if there's a ton of players and name players that are left over from that first round they have
15:20To jump on but also I find it interesting which we get a kick out of in the NFL Ben round number one
15:24Okay, it's a big sprint same way. It used to be in the NBA where all the numbers of first round second round
15:29We're doing one night now you have that chance to take a look at that board
15:32How many trades we're gonna get today where you have some time to digress and say you know what let's make a move for this
15:36kid in only
15:3728 picks tonight not the full 30 like we saw last night as the Sixers and the Suns have both
15:43Forfeited a second round selection. So pick 58 the storylines tonight the best prospects still out there
15:51Where does Brody James play?
15:54They're out now
15:56The odds are now out for NBA Rookie of the Year in the 2024
16:0225 NBA season DRS
16:04It was a battle for who would be number one overall who would be selected for Zachary Reza Shay
16:10Goes to Atlanta in front of his fellow countrymen also out of France
16:15Alex saw who was the favorite at one point in the expected number one overall pick as the Hawks earned that
16:22During the NBA Draft Lottery and of course the ping-pong balls bouncing in their favor
16:28But sorry never worked out in Atlanta Reza Shay became the hefty favorite to go first overall
16:33He did SAR falls to two and he goes to Washington
16:37But just because Reza Shay went first does not mean that everybody believed that Reza Shay was a better prospect
16:43Or would have a better NBA career
16:46Then Alex SAR and we see that reflected ever so slightly and the odds to win Rookie of the Year SAR
16:52opens as the favorite on fan do it plus for 50 a dollar and a dollar and a half in front of
16:59Reza Shay who has the second best number at six to one. Yeah, here's the interesting part about it this year
17:03Which again we didn't get last year
17:04We thought it would be a runaway here for the Rookie of the Year and rightfully so Victor Web and Yama
17:09Started out a little bit slow if that can be kind there and was tremendous the rest of the way
17:14But also you had that sort of outside influence for a player in Chet Holmgren for OKC who didn't play the year before but then
17:21Stepped in so it was quite fun to see two of those guys go toe-to-toe
17:24This seems been so wide open at this point of who's going to win it now granted in order to win a Rookie of the Year
17:30What do you need opportunities? It can't be like if you say to yourself
17:33Well, I think connects gonna be the steel of the draft
17:35Well, it's gonna be a start in the Lakers lineup averaging 19 points a game probably not
17:39So it's hard to win Rookie of the Year from that facet when you picture some of these guys on worse basketball teams
17:44Just looking to make their way around so I take a look at SAR and Reza Shay
17:48Obviously those two guys are the favorite but you don't put out guys like Castle even Booz Ellis
17:53The problem is I'm not too familiar with these guys because the last couple years you got that bona fide
17:57Number one the superstar coming into the league as long as they're healthy and playing 65 games
18:01They get it this year. Oh boy, and the odds reflected here
18:05There's a lot of players between 20 to 1 or less with a legitimate chance to win
18:09This should be a fun year historically a couple of things to note even before the 2023 NBA draft Victor
18:16Wim Benyama was close to a $2 favorite to an NBA Rookie of the Year those prices
18:21shifted just a little bit throughout the NBA campaign jostling with Chet Holmgren of the
18:27OKC Thunder
18:28But ultimately Wim Benyama with a great home stretch of his rookie campaign despite the Spurs
18:33Struggling and only winning 22 games won NBA Rookie of the Year and became a very heavy odds on favorite once again to win
18:41That hardware even before the NFL draft Caleb Williams was the favorite to be the NFL
18:46Offensive Rookie of the Year before he was drafted first overall these odds were not out until the end of last night's
18:54Opening round in the RS you mentioned not knowing some of these names
18:59So it's hard to project really how they are going to perform in the association in their first year
19:05This was the second consecutive season a non US college basketball player was drafted first overall
19:12Victor Wim Benyama last year Zachary Rizzo Shay this season the first time that's ever happened an NBA draft history two
19:18Consecutive years of a non US college basketball player from 2010 to 2022
19:23It was a US college freshman after completing his first year in
19:27Collegiate hoops making his way to the NBA, but I do still believe there is some value out there Steph Castle
19:34Could we see back-to-back San Antonio Spurs when NBA Rookie of the Year?
19:38He went fourth last night at plus 750 modest Buzellas on a slide down to Chicago at the 11th overall pick
19:45But the fourth best price at plus 850. I think Reed Shepherd has value at 10 to 1 and listen
19:51Maybe I have a soft spot in my heart for the guys that battle down to the post the big men
19:5612 to 1 on Zach 80 9th overall selection to the Grizzlies and a guy that I think is the best pro prospect out of this
20:03Draft class who will have the best NBA career Donovan Klingon 20 to 1 Portland 7th overall pick
20:09I think there's a lot of value on the big man from UConn
20:11I mean shout out to the handicappers on this one that if you're doing deep dives on these players and know exactly what you're talking
20:16About because for me, I'm just looking at names here and what I've seen at a college basketball and saying
20:20Oh, I guess our and Risa Shea are going to be very good
20:23But if you know you might like it
20:24We're only taking a look at some of those guys at 20 to 1 there might be other guys in this class that really step
20:29Up sure that you can get a great number on because as I said typically it's pink by numbers in Rookie of the Year
20:33It's gonna be a guy that's drafted number one number two overall because they were superstars in the international game like Victor
20:39Yama, we're just a great player in the NCAA game at this point
20:42So if you are a true handicapper, you probably absolutely love this Rookie of the Year a setting
20:47We'll see what Rob Dillingham's role is in Minneapolis. He's also 20 to 1
20:51He can put up a lot of points Cody Williams 10th overall pick to Utah
20:5520 to 1 Ron Holland who won fifth overall to Detroit a young roster. They're
21:0020 to 1 Isaiah Collier does not have a spot on the fan duel sportsbook odds for the NBA Rookie of the Year award
21:08But in other areas, I know our guy. Okay Doves thinks he was a tremendous pick at 29
