Sir Keir Starmer makes tackling knife crime a “personal mission” of his after meeting the families of victims of knife crime in west London on Tuesday. “This is something which a government needs to take responsibility for. I will take responsibility for on a cross-party basis to make the change we need”, he said.

00:00I was the Chief Prosecutor for five years, and therefore I've prosecuted many cases involving the use of knives,
00:06and I've made it my personal mission to deal with this. It is a moral mission so far as I'm concerned.
00:12It isn't a question of urban versus rural. In fact, I think there's more knife crime sadly in rural areas,
00:18or at least it's going up more quickly, and I think it's not fair on the families we've been hearing from this morning
00:24to simply point the finger to somebody else. This is something which a government needs to take responsibility for.
00:31I will take responsibility for on a cross-party basis. Some of it we can get on with quite quickly in terms of banning knives available online.
00:39Some of it will take longer, but it's a moral mission so far as I'm concerned.
00:43I've made a commitment to these families and other families that we will now move from the talking stage to the action stage.
