00:03Be it the massive waves, strong currents, or freezing waters, oceans really do have
00:08the potential to dispose of you in an instant.
00:12Today we're venturing into the murky waters.
00:15Here are the top 15 most dangerous types of fish ever found.
00:21Number 15.
00:22Needlefish.
00:23Measuring in at just 1 meter long and weighing just 4 kilograms, needlefish are a lot more
00:28dangerous than they look.
00:30That's because these fish not only have a long, sharp, and bony beak, but also have
00:35a tendency to leap out of the water at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.
00:40Unfortunately, this has made them a true terror in their Indian and Pacific Ocean habitats,
00:44as they are attracted to lights from boats and will often leap out and impale unsuspecting
00:50sailors.
00:51As a result, they are widely considered to be even more dangerous than sharks to fishermen
00:56who work in needlefish-infested areas.
00:59Number 14.
01:01Stingray.
01:02As the name suggests, stingrays stand out due to them having a stinger near the base
01:07of their tail.
01:08And while they are usually docile, they don't hesitate to use said stinger when they're
01:13threatened.
01:14Typically speaking, this only occurs with humans if one is accidentally stepped on,
01:17as they tend to burrow under the sand as camouflage in order to ambush prey.
01:22Unfortunately, these stings are usually extremely painful and often cause secondary symptoms
01:27such as local tissue death, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle cramps.
01:33Yet while smaller stingrays likely will not kill you, larger species can pose a very real
01:38threat.
01:39Most notably, famed ecologist Steve Irwin learned this the hard way in 2006, when he
01:43unfortunately passed away after coming into contact with a 2-meter-long bull stingray.
01:49As a result, we'd recommend swimming in the other direction if you see one on your
01:53next tropical vacation.
01:55Number 13.
01:57Giant Moray Eel.
01:58Although there are over 200 different species of moray eel, the giant moray eel is certainly
02:05the most troublesome.
02:07Found throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, they can reach up to 3 meters in length and
02:11weigh as much as 30 kilograms.
02:13While they're not all that aggressive due to them spending most of their time in their
02:18They can do some serious damage when divers attempt to feed them, as they will sometimes
02:22lunge forward and bite off the fingers of said divers.
02:26As a result, we'd recommend staying far, far away from them on your next scuba diving
02:30adventure.
02:31Number 12.
02:34Barracuda.
02:36Found in the oceans worldwide, the barracuda is an apex predator that has the potential
02:41to dish some serious damage.
02:44Measuring lengths of up to 2 meters and weights of up to 50 kilograms, the barracuda is absolutely
02:49massive, and it also sports a set of sharp teeth in order to chomp down on its prey.
02:55Generally speaking, barracudas are harmless to us humans, as they typically only attack
03:00other fish.
03:01However, in murky waters, they have been known to bite the arms and legs of humans after
03:05mistaking them for the underbelly of a fish.
03:08They've also been known to chomp down on shiny objects such as belt buckles, necklaces, and
03:13earrings.
03:14As a result, these beastly barracudas really can be quite bothersome.
03:20Number 11.
03:21Anglerfish.
03:22When it comes to deep-sea creatures, few are as frightening as the anglerfish.
03:28Although only about the size of a coffee cup, they have a pretty frightening appearance,
03:32with the 200 different species of them each featuring a prominent lure that hangs off
03:37their front end.
03:38It uses this lure to attract prey, and once said prey is close enough, it will clamp down
03:43onto it with its impressive set of teeth.
03:46However, while anglerfish are certainly extremely dangerous to fish, they live too far below
03:51the sea for them to ever come into contact with humans.
03:54Regardless, we think you'd agree that this is probably for the best.
03:58Number 10.
04:00Box jellyfish.
04:01While getting a sting from most species of jellyfish would be painful, the box jellyfish
04:06definitely takes it up a notch.
04:09That's because these feisty fish, which are found throughout the Indian and Pacific oceans,
04:13administer one of the most toxic stings in the world.
04:16As far as jellyfish go, box jellyfish are pretty massive, coming in at about 10 feet
04:20long.
04:21Their tentacles have about 5,000 stinging cells each, and each are equipped with a toxin
04:26that attacks the heart, nervous system, and skin cells.
04:30Unfortunately, said toxin is so painful that human victims have been known to either go
04:34into shock and drown, or die of heart failure mere moments after coming into contact with
04:39one.
04:40Yet even if you do survive, you can expect to experience considerable pain for weeks,
04:44and there's often significant scarring where the tentacles make contact with your skin.
04:49As a result, we'd suggest swimming in the other direction if you see one of these in
04:53the water during your next beach vacation.
04:55Number 9.
04:57Killer whales.
04:58A mainstay at parks such as SeaWorld and Marineland, killer whales are certainly one of the most
05:04impressive fish on the planet.
05:07Usually coming in at a length of about 6 to 8 meters, and a weight in excess of 6 tons,
05:12they truly are massive, and it turns out that they are not in fact whales, but instead the
05:16largest member of the dolphin family.
05:19Regardless, they are strong hunters, typically attacking in packs and going after seals,
05:24cod, and at times, even mink whales.
05:27Unfortunately, they have a tendency to attack humans, however in the wild these assaults
05:31are very rare.
05:33Instead it's when killer whales are put into captivity that they become deadly, as
05:37they will sometimes lash out against their trainers out of frustration, stress, or loneliness.
05:43Often leading to serious injuries and at times even death as a result.
05:47These attacks certainly have given killer whale shows a bad rap in recent years.

06:04Number 8.
06:05The Reef Stonefish While it may just look like a rock or a lump
06:09of coral, the reef stonefish is one of the most toxic fish in the world.
06:15Found in coral reefs throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, it's a master of disguise,
06:20hiding on the seafloor to camouflage with its surroundings.
06:23It is while it's on the seafloor that it hunts, quickly swimming and catching unsuspecting
06:27prey at rapid speeds.
06:29Speeds that are so rapid, in fact, that a reef stonefish attack often lasts as little
06:34as .015 seconds.
06:36However, while these fish are usually not a danger to humans, they very well can be
06:41if threatened.
06:42That's because they have 13 dorsal fins on their spine that contain a highly toxic venom.
06:47With this venom leading to severe pain, heart failure, and even death if left untreated.
06:52Luckily, since 1959 there have been an anti-venom that can treat stonefish stings, and it's
06:57also said that putting a wounded area in hot water can help soothe the pain.
07:01Yet given that they only sting if stepped on or otherwise touched in any way, it's
07:06pretty easy to steer clear of them while snorkeling or scuba diving, so long as you keep your
07:10hands off the reef.
07:137.
07:14Goliath Tigerfish While most of the fish on this list only attack
07:18humans if provoked, the Goliath Tigerfish stands apart for having actively attacked
07:23humans on a number of occasions.
07:26Found throughout the Congo River Basin, the Goliath Tigerfish is rather large, growing
07:30to lengths of about 1.5 meters and weights of up to about 50 kilograms.
07:35It hunts by ambushing small fish, speeding up to them, and clamping down on them with
07:39a large set of teeth, with each tooth typically growing as much as one inch long.
07:44As a result, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the local name for the species is the
07:48Mbenga, which means the dangerous fish in Swahili.
07:53Yet what makes the Goliath Tigerfish really dangerous is the fact that it will often attack
07:57prey much larger than itself.
08:00As such, it has routinely assaulted both crocodiles and humans, and stories abound throughout
08:05the Congo River Basin of attacks from this nasty creature.
08:08As a result, we'd recommend staying far away from this body of water unless you'd
08:12like to become its next victim.

08:17Red-Bellied Piranhas Throughout the Amazon River, there are packs
08:21of predatory fish known as Red-Bellied Piranhas.
08:25These crazy carnivores, which grow to lengths of about 50 centimeters and weigh in at about
08:295 kilograms, are notable because they are not only meat eaters, but also have extremely
08:34sharp sets of teeth.
08:37Typically they use said teeth to chase down small prey such as worms, crustaceans, and
08:41fish, and in fact will often scavenge for plants and insects in order to meet their
08:45dietary needs.
08:47However, when food is scarce, piranhas will at times gang together to take down large
08:52prey in what is known as a feeding frenzy.
08:55Usually eating up said large individual within minutes, the victim will typically be an animal
09:00such as a capybara or an egret.
09:03However, in some cases, the victim will unfortunately be a human, and although such occurrences
09:09are extremely rare, they have unfortunately led to some very horrific deaths.

09:16Swordfish As the name suggests, swordfish are definitely
09:20one of the sharper fish out there.
09:22That's because their sword-shaped bills are extremely honed and durable, and are typically
09:26used to hunt down smaller fish.
09:28However, rather than impale their prey with their swords, they typically use them as scythes,
09:34slashing through small schools of fish in order to knock them out and gobble them up.
09:38And while their fast speeds and ferocious hunting style are no real danger to humans,
09:43swordfish can be quite the hazard when they are harpooned.
09:46That's because when impaled, they will typically jump or dive in such a way that could damage
09:50a boat or injure a human.
09:52Unfortunately, a Hawaiian man by the name of Randy Lames found this out the hard way
09:56in 2015, when he became the first recorded person to be killed by one of these creatures.
10:00You see, he had shot one with his harpoon when, by instinct, the swordfish jumped up
10:06and in the process, punctured limbs in the chest, leading to him to later passing away
10:10in the hospital.
10:11This just goes to show how dangerous swordfish truly are.
10:15It turns out that swordfish are much more dangerous when they are out of the water than
10:19when they are inside of it.
10:21This is because their meat contains very high levels of mercury, and this is of special
10:25concern to pregnant women.
10:27Turns out that long-term swordfish consumption can cause mercury to accumulate in your bloodstream
10:31over time, and that if too much mercury is in a pregnant woman's bloodstream, it could
10:35damage a baby's developing brain and nervous system.
10:39As a result, we suggest you stay far away from this mercury-high fish dish if you are
10:43expecting a child any time soon.
10:464.
10:48Pufferfish While pufferfish may not be the largest or
10:52fastest fish out there, their ability to puff up and poison their predators makes them extremely
10:58dangerous.
10:59Pufferfish typically only inflate when they feel threatened, as their puffed-up persona
11:03makes them look like a giant ball of spikes, which isn't exactly appetizing for a would-be
11:08predator.
11:09Additionally, their spikes contain a neurotoxin known as tetrodotoxin, which can cause paralysis,
11:14seizures, and even death in humans.
11:16To make matters worse, the neurotoxin is not only up to 1,200 times more poisonous than
11:21cyanide, but it's also so abundant in the pufferfish that just one has the ability to
11:26kill up to 30 adult humans.
11:29When you then further consider that there is no antidote for a pufferfish's neurotoxins,
11:33it becomes clear that they should probably be avoided.
11:37Interestingly, however, there is a Japanese delicacy known as fugu that turns the pufferfish
11:42into a delectable dish.
11:44Having been eaten by the Japanese for over 2,000 years, fugu is a mainstay in Japanese
11:48culture.
11:49However, in recent years, it has been heavily regulated by the state.
11:53Ever since 1958, chefs had to obtain a license in order to prepare fugu.
11:58This involves first completing a two-year apprenticeship under a certified fugu chef,
12:02and then undertaking an examination.
12:05The first two hours of said examination is written, but afterwards, there is a three-minute
12:09fugu identification component, and a 20-minute fugu preparation component.
12:14However, considering that only about 35% of the applicants pass, the license certainly
12:19isn't easy to obtain.
12:21Regardless, even though these chefs are highly trained, you would undoubtedly be taking a
12:25pretty big risk if you chose to consume a pufferfish.
12:29Number 3.
12:31Lionfish
12:33While the vibrant patterns, bright colors, and interesting shape of a lionfish may make
12:37them one of the most beautiful fish on this list, this certainly does not make them any
12:41less dangerous.
12:42Hailing from the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, there are 12 species of lionfish out
12:47there, all of which feast on shrimp and smaller fish.
12:50However, when threatened, they'll make use of the poisonous spikes that they have across
12:54their back, pelvis, and underside.
12:56Being filled with toxin, being stung with said spikes can cause intense pain and sweating,
13:01and in extreme cases, respiratory distress and paralysis in humans.
13:05Luckily, there is a rather simple cure for lionfish stings, as one must simply remove
13:09the spines and soak the wound in hot water to help break down the toxins.
13:14If this treatment is performed, then the pain from the sting typically subsides after one
13:18or two days.
13:19However, if it's not treated in time, then it's far less effective.
13:22Yet, what makes lionfish even more worrisome is that they're an invasive species, appearing
13:27in densities of over 350 fish per hectare on some reefs.
13:31They have spread across the eastern seaboard and the Mediterranean.
13:35This is problematic because they not only have no predators outside the Indo-Pacific,
13:39but they also have a voracious appetite and most notably decimated about 65 to 95% of
13:44the endemic small reef fish in the Bahamas in just a 30-year time frame.
13:49As a result, we can expect issues regarding these feisty fish to continue to skyrocket
13:53if their overpopulation is not addressed soon.
13:562.
13:58Candiru
14:00Found in the depths of the Amazon, the candiru is a fish that is very small but incredibly
14:04mighty.
14:06Measuring in at about 17 centimeters in length and being clear in color, it's very hard
14:11to spot and is widely known as a vampire fish due to its tendency to swim into the gills
14:16of smaller fish and live off them like a parasite.
14:20However, while the reports on the subject are shaky, there's quite a bit of anecdotal
14:23evidence to suggest that candirus have another target, humans.
14:28In particular, reports specify that candirus have a tendency to swim into human private
14:33parts, with urethras being the most common place of attack.
14:37It is said that once there, they will latch on to its walls with barbs, with said spikes
14:42only driving deeper into them if you try to pull one out.
14:46As a result, while some suggested remedies do exist, many historical accounts suggest
14:50just cutting the offending member off in order to relieve yourself of the pain.
14:54Luckily, however, the actual empirical evidence attesting to candiru attacks remains limited.
15:00In fact, many scientists today believe that these were just sensationalized stories and
15:05that if a candiru were to swim up your private parts, it would be completely by accident
15:09as they would not survive for long after having done so.
15:13Regardless, we'd still suggest staying far away from the Amazon's murky waters, just
15:17in case.
15:19After all, you never know if a cruel candiru will make you their next target.
15:231.
15:26Great White Sharks Although great white sharks are not quite as
15:30dangerous as movies like Jaws and Sharknado make them out to be, they definitely still
15:35are one of the most dangerous animals out there.
15:38Measuring as long as 6 meters and typically weighing in at more than 2.5 tons, it's pretty
15:43clear that the great white is massive.
15:46Unsurprisingly, it therefore uses its sheer power and 300 serrated teeth to its advantage,
15:52attacking prey such as sea lions, seals, small-toothed whales, and sea turtles.
15:57Yet it turns out that at times humans also make their way onto the menu.
16:02And while sharks don't actually like the taste of humans, they often mistake them for
16:06seals.
16:07And after they take one bite and realize their mistake, they generally swim away.
16:11Unfortunately, this really is rather weak assurance, as even one bite is enough to severely
16:15maim or even kill a human.
16:18Yet with only about 30 to 35 great white shark attacks occurring per year, the chances of
16:22you coming face to face with one are rather low.
16:25As a result, if we crunch the numbers, it seems that it really is the sharks who should
16:29be scared of us.
16:30That's because if we include all types of sharks, humans kill a total of 100 million
16:35of them every single year.
16:38In other words, between 6.4 and 7.9 percent of their entire population.
16:44Primary reason for this shark slaughter is thanks to the demand for shark fin soup from
16:49many Asian countries, where it's a delicacy that's so expensive that just one bowl of
16:53it can cost upwards of a hundred bucks.
16:56As a result, conservation efforts are being made around the world to ensure that these
17:00sharks remain in our oceans and stay off our dinner plates.
