00:00We'll be right back.
00:04Keep the hot topics rolling around.
00:06Some things that we really like here, Joe Ranieri, are nostalgia.
00:09I get caught up in it.
00:10Like you watched the game yesterday at Rickwood Field.
00:12Loved the nostalgia.
00:13I love walking in the ballpark and say, boy, 25, 30 years ago,
00:16do you remember the home run that was hit here?
00:18I used to walk in the Veterans Stadium before it was knocked down and look up
00:21into the 600 level and see where a home run had a little star on it that said
00:26S, where Willie Starge was.
00:28Now, 30, 40 years ago, that would have been an unbelievable home run.
00:31In golf, we tend to do the same things, and it's with Tiger Woods.
00:36Now, a lot of the topics we picked today, Joe Ranieri, have to do with money.
00:40Tiger Woods now on the PGA Tour, as old as he is right now and non-competing,
00:45he is still a draw.
00:47So if you're looking for the PGA Tour to say how can we keep ratings good
00:51and moving in the right direction when more and more people are deflecting
00:54and going to live golf, let's get Tiger Woods in more of these events
00:57that he wouldn't qualify for.
00:59So a lifetime exemption is on the table for exceptional lifetime achievement,
01:04which means in those elevated tournaments with the $20 million purse,
01:08if Tiger says he would like to play in any one of those tournaments,
01:11he's automatically accepted.
01:13The thing I do like here from the PGA Tour is it's not taking the place
01:17of maybe a regular qualifier who could have used that spot
01:20and thought he could compete in that tournament.
01:22So let's start here.
01:23The PGA Tour says, hey, Tiger, you want to show up and play?
01:26Do it.
01:27We would love to have you because the ratings will show higher
01:30for that weekend's tournament.
01:32This is just unbelievable.
01:35You mean like they made the exemption, the USGA,
01:38for him to play in this year's U.S. Open and he didn't make the cut
01:42because he looked it was actually painful watching him swing the club
01:46and walk around.
01:47Like what are we doing here?
01:48Let me ask you this here, though, Donny.
01:50Let me ask you this.
01:51If there was no live golf, would this even be on the tape?
01:56Would we be talking about this right now if the Roms
01:59and the Deschambots and the Kupkas were actually still on the PGA Tour?
02:04Would they be offering a lifetime exemption that they didn't do
02:08to Jack Nicklaus, they didn't do it to Gary Player,
02:10they didn't do it to Arnie, they didn't do it to guys
02:12that built the sport here?
02:14Would they be doing it or is this strictly not so much nostalgia
02:18as it is nobody's watching because half of our best players
02:23are on another tour we can't talk about?
02:26It's such a good question because we don't technically know the answer
02:30even if we really do.
02:31Like the PGA Tour, as much as they say,
02:33what are they, non-profit as an organization,
02:35but somehow finding more profit to give these players
02:37with these eight elevated tournaments, which I like
02:39because it brings more good golfers before and after some of these majors,
02:43but they're not doing it to be nice guys saying,
02:45Hey, Tiger, man, thank you for all you've done
02:48because if, let's just say, Tiger Woods didn't draw anything
02:51and could barely swing a golf club, they'd say,
02:52Hey, Tiger, if you want to start the tournament off with a tee shot
02:55with like Jack Nicklaus does at the Masters,
02:57you can do that every weekend if you want,
02:59but they want him to play not because it's like,
03:01Hey, man, it's good to have Tiger out there.
03:03Hey, man, it's good for business here and puts more money
03:06in our pocket on the next season.
03:07So I do understand completely what you're saying.
03:10It doesn't really move the needle for me,
03:12but it's just interesting that out of nowhere, it's like,
03:13Hey, look, we've never done this before.
03:15You're such a great golfer.
03:16You can play in these high-priced tournaments.
03:18And I guess knowing that the other players are like, yeah, good.
03:21That means, you know, ratings will go up maybe more versus the future.
03:24But Tiger's not even going to play.
03:26It's like, oh, man, you got a Tiger in this?
03:28He's going to win this tournament again.
03:29I can't get first place.
03:30Like, no, not anymore.
03:32Yeah.
03:33It just feels like it's a,
03:35they're milking every last ounce of Tiger Woods popularity
03:39until they can't get it anymore.
03:42And it's not because he's competitive.
03:44It's not because he still can win a tournament here or there.
03:47They're doing it for their own benefit.
03:49And listen, if I'm Tiger Woods, man, like you got other, like Tiger,
03:54like move on, man.
03:55You want to show up to Augusta once a year?
03:58Great.
03:59But I mean, having this guy show up,
04:01not because you think he can actually be competitive,
04:03that just you hope somebody buys a ticket or watches the event.
04:07You're using Tiger Woods for every last ounce of credibility that you have
04:12left PGA.
04:13And that to me is just wrong.
04:15By the way, here's what I need out of Tiger Woods.
04:18Obviously competing in a tournament, which would be nice,
04:20but can we drop the Sunday red?
04:21Like the little shrimp logo on the hat and the Jersey.
04:24Can we just go back to the Tiger Woods logo at Nike,
04:26get them back in that Sunday red.
04:28Like that would be more nostalgic than him actually playing in some
04:30tournaments.
04:31I just can't stand a Sunday red at it.
04:33By the way, did anybody buy that?
04:35Like I don't actively golf at this point, but anybody go out and like,
04:38you know what?
04:39I'm going to get a fresh new Sunday red shirt to go play this Saturday out
04:41here on the local Muni.
04:43I don't think that happened here.
04:44Now talking about Tiger Woods showing up to golf courses very soon in our
04:48future.
04:49You know,
04:50it's probably showing up on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
04:52and PGA tour events.
04:53That's Charlie woods.
04:54How about this?
04:55Usga championships.
04:57He did qualify for his first tournament there.
05:00I believe it was medalist in his local that he had to qualify for this
05:03event sooner than later.
05:05Like, are we going to see like a, a Bronnie James, LeBron James,
05:08I'm going to hang around long enough to play in a golf tournament with my
05:11son here.
05:12What are the thoughts here on Charlie?
05:13Who probably is a better God for the tiger right now.
05:15Well, I, you know, behind the scenes,
05:18Tiger is probably spending an awful lot more time these days of coaching his
05:22kid and expecting him and hoping that he becomes the heir apparent to what
05:28his dad built here.
05:30And all indications are the kid loves it.
05:32The kid is extremely talented.
05:34Listen tigers.
05:36If you remember when tiger came up,
05:38it was tiger's dad that was pulling all the strings.
05:41So, you know,
05:43Tiger is going to be pulling all the strings for Charlie here.
05:46And if he has any early success,
05:49then we're going to be talking about three or four decades of tiger woods
05:53and, and family here dominating the PGA tour landscape.
05:57Yeah.
05:59Yeah.
06:00Like what happens if his son is like, let's just say 18 years old,
06:02maybe plays a year or two,
06:03like Tiger did at Stanford and turns pro and goes, Hey dad,
06:06go into the live golf tour.
06:08And he's offering me a check of $600 million right off the bat.
06:11Ooh,
06:12that would be a struggle in the woods household at that point right now.
06:15But it is kind of interesting to see because when you are,
06:17let's just say tiger woods, it's tiger woods and Jack Nicholas, right?
06:20Greatest golfers of all time, pick or choose each one that you want here.
06:23But if you look at tiger woods, right?
06:25Having a son like, Hey, he's going to be a good golfer.
06:27I cannot imagine the amount of pressure.
06:29Same thing like Ronnie James.
06:30Like you are just expected to be dominant.
06:33Ooh, maybe your dad would have hit that shot.
06:34Your dad would have hit that.
06:35By the way,
06:36how early do we see a sponsor's exemption for Charlie woods on the tour
06:40here?
06:41Yep.
06:42Yeah.
06:43Well, it's so it's an anomaly because usually the game's greatest in any
06:48sport,
06:49their offspring aren't even remotely in the same ballpark and how hard it is
06:54to get that.
06:55The only one I can think of B would be Griffey Griffey senior and Griffey
06:58junior.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Everybody else, father, son combinations.
07:02It never, never happened.
07:04So I can't wait to see how this works out.
07:07Yeah.
07:08It's like, dad's a billionaire.
07:09Like just give me the black MX card.
07:10I'm going to play Xbox.
07:11I have to work a day of my life here and look, you know what?
07:14I'm tiger woods, his kid, but good on Charlie.
07:16Let's see if he can pass his father in major.
