00:04:31You're a nut.
00:04:32You can't take that thing to New Orleans.
00:04:34Why not?
00:04:35It's a 68 bus.
00:04:36You ain't taking that to New Orleans.
00:04:37LA, New Orleans, and a bus.
00:04:39Let me ask you a question.
00:04:40What happens if it breaks down?
00:04:41Exactly.
00:04:42What happens...
00:04:43Not if.
00:04:44What's the word?
00:04:45When it breaks down.
00:04:46Okay, it's gonna break down.
00:04:47That's right.
00:04:48So what's the worst that's gonna happen when it breaks down?
00:04:49Worse than...
00:04:50We're gonna be out in no fucking where.
00:04:51Texas is what happens when it breaks down.
00:04:53No.
00:04:54Well, that could be the worst.
00:04:55We can't do that.
00:04:56But what's the worst that can happen?
00:04:58Exactly.
00:04:59What's the worst that can happen?
00:05:00That's why you don't go.
00:05:01The worst...
00:05:02When I was a kid,
00:05:03those things used to be called rolling coffins.
00:05:06Or the bus I got laid in.
00:05:08Or the bus I got laid in.
00:05:09Now, maybe I might go with you for that one.
00:05:11Look, I got stuff to do.
00:05:14I gotta be at the agency.
00:05:16Bullshit, you gotta be at the agency.
00:05:18We both know that's bullshit,
00:05:20you gotta be at the agency.
00:05:22All I'm saying is take a week out of your life, man.
00:05:24I'm asking you to go with me
00:05:25because it's important to me.
00:05:27But what's the point of driving this bus
00:05:28across the country?
00:05:29The point is for me to do something
00:05:31that he and I had talked about doing
00:05:33since we were knee-high to puppies,
00:05:35but we never got to do
00:05:36because something always got in the way.
00:05:38He got married, I got married.
00:05:40Somebody died, somebody had a kid.
00:05:42We changed jobs, we relocated.
00:05:44Something always happens.
00:05:50I can't do it, man.
00:05:51I'd like to do it, but I can't do it.
00:05:53You're gonna be a fuck all your life.
00:05:56A week, man!
00:05:57You know what, Augie, look at it.
00:05:59It sounds great.
00:06:00I can't go, and I don't think you should go.
00:06:03I mean...
00:06:04Okay, I'll go by myself.
00:06:06Thank you.
00:06:08Chip some more balls, and I'll see you later.
00:06:12And don't hit me on the way out.
00:06:14You ain't going anywhere.
00:06:16It's a nice idea.
00:06:17Think about it.
00:06:18If I thought about it...
00:06:19Take the box, go on a plane,
00:06:20take it to New Orleans,
00:06:21and do what you gotta do.
00:06:22That's not the deal.
00:06:23Take the 68 bus to New Orleans.
00:06:25That's not the deal.
00:06:26It's the bus that his dad gave to him,
00:06:28and he's gone,
00:06:29and there's the bus in my driveway.
00:06:34I can't go.
00:06:35I'd love to go.
00:06:36I can't go.
00:06:37No, you don't want to go.
00:06:38I can't go.
00:06:39Is that your final word?
00:06:41Yeah, I don't think you should go.
00:06:44No, I'm going.
00:06:46I'm gonna do it.
00:06:47Why the hell not?
00:06:50I'll call you.
00:06:53I ain't going.
00:07:24Fuck!
00:07:26Oh, shit.
00:07:54Would you do me a favor
00:07:56and not drive in this lane?
00:07:58I gotta drive in this lane.
00:08:00Why?
00:08:01Because I got the pedal to the floor right now.
00:08:03So?
00:08:04I can't go any faster.
00:08:05Let them go around you.
00:08:06They are going around me.
00:08:07You're making me nervous.
00:08:08They are going around me.
00:08:20Shit.
00:08:23Stall him.
00:08:30We haven't even reached downtown yet.
00:08:32I know.
00:08:35I told you this thing ain't gonna make it anywhere.
00:08:37We can't even get out of L.A.
00:08:41Have you had this thing checked out or anything before we...
00:08:44I mean, I had the guy at the service station look at it.
00:08:46He said it's fine.
00:08:47He changed the oil.
00:08:48He lubed it.
00:08:49We're inside the borders of the United States.
00:08:51What can go wrong?
00:09:21I've been here all the time.
00:09:22I've never been here.
00:09:23I have.
00:09:24I tell you, when I fly into Phoenix,
00:09:25I know exactly where I'm at.
00:09:27Because you get all these old broads
00:09:28with these fake suntans
00:09:29and these fake boob jobs
00:09:31and their faces that don't move, you know?
00:09:33Right.
00:09:34Those perpetual smiles.
00:09:35So that's why you date younger women.
00:09:37That's exactly why I date younger women.
00:09:42L.A.,
00:09:43I don't know.
00:09:44I don't know.
00:09:45I don't know.
00:09:46I don't know.
00:09:47I don't know.
00:09:48I don't know.
00:09:49I don't know.
00:09:50L.A.
00:09:51We're almost there.
00:09:52We get to the top of this hill,
00:09:53it's cooking time, baby.
00:09:54He's here?
00:09:55Yeah, right there.
00:09:56Buddy of mine.
00:09:57A friend of mine, actually.
00:09:58A friend?
00:09:59Yeah.
00:10:00A friend of yours?
00:10:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:02I talked to her after you came by the other day.
00:10:03I talked to her.
00:10:04I said we're going to do this trip
00:10:05and dropped him by for the trip.
00:10:08Here, she's here.
00:10:13So is she one of these youngsters?
00:10:18She's a nice gal.
00:10:21She makes a good cookie.
00:10:25And you refer to her as a nice gal.
00:10:28Not a nice lady, a nice friend,
00:10:30or a nice woman, but a nice gal.
00:10:33So what are you doing?
00:10:34Distancing yourself from this woman, or what?
00:10:36No, I just...
00:10:37No, not at all.
00:10:39So I'm asking you,
00:10:40tell me a little bit about her.
00:10:44Friend of a friend.
00:10:45How many women friends of yours make good cookies?
00:10:51That's what I thought.
00:10:58Yeah.
00:10:59They're good.
00:11:00They're good, though.
00:11:10You ever get lonely?
00:11:13I mean, lonely in the sense that
00:11:15I wish I had somebody with me here
00:11:17every day, good, bad, indifferent,
00:11:19but somebody...
00:11:20Every day?
00:11:21Yeah.
00:11:22The same person.
00:11:23You have to know her smell,
00:11:24her attitudes, her moods.
00:11:26Usually when that happens...
00:11:27They're gone.
00:11:28They're gone.
00:11:29It's over.
00:11:30I hear you.
00:11:32I got some great advice years ago
00:11:34from a buddy of mine.
00:11:35He said to me, he said,
00:11:36you know what,
00:11:37you want to be happy,
00:11:39you need three girlfriends.
00:11:41You want a girl that you can
00:11:43go out and do stuff with.
00:11:44You know, you go to the theater,
00:11:46or music, or you know.
00:11:48And then you have a girl that,
00:11:50you know, kind of philosophical,
00:11:52spiritual kind.
00:11:53Somebody you can actually talk to.
00:11:55Yeah, right.
00:11:56And then you got a girl that,
00:11:58you know, she's not even sure
00:12:00what her name is.
00:12:01It's okay.
00:12:02Nice little physical...
00:12:03I know her, too, yeah.
00:12:07Well, let me ask you a question.
00:12:09A type girl comes along.
00:12:11Woman comes along.
00:12:12She has all three of those qualities.
00:12:15She's easy to be with.
00:12:18Yeah.
00:12:19Fun.
00:12:20Great sense of humor.
00:12:21Great conversation.
00:12:23She's gregarious with your friends.
00:12:25Yeah.
00:12:26Everybody likes her.
00:12:27Yeah.
00:12:28She's an intellectual,
00:12:29or near an intellectual.
00:12:30She loves the arts.
00:12:31Stop, stop.
00:12:32You're going too far.
00:12:33Right?
00:12:34And in bed.
00:12:35Yeah.
00:12:36You're glad to go to bed,
00:12:37but you're also glad to see the sunrise
00:12:39in the morning.
00:12:40She make good coffee.
00:12:41Yeah, she make good coffee.
00:12:43Oh, and I'm still alive.
00:12:44And do I have the strength to drink it?
00:12:48Yeah, now you got my attention.
00:12:50Yeah.
00:12:53So what would you do?
00:13:00The old man is stumped.
00:13:04But here's the other thing.
00:13:05You got to make sure that with the number three,
00:13:07when you're in the throes of the passion,
00:13:09you don't call out the wrong name.
00:13:11Number two.
00:13:12She look like number one to me.
00:13:17This one is good to call out,
00:13:19oh God, oh Jesus, oh.
00:13:22Any biblical, whatever.
00:13:24Any biblical.
00:13:34Look at these things.
00:13:37Amazing, isn't it?
00:13:39And they're huge.
00:13:41Look at these things.
00:13:43Look at the size of them.
00:13:45Look how much the world's changed
00:13:46since this thing was made.
00:13:48That's what we're looking at,
00:13:49you know what I mean?
00:13:50That's true.
00:13:51Look at this.
00:14:02All right, favorite baseball player.
00:14:04What?
00:14:05Favorite baseball player.
00:14:06Who is it?
00:14:07Man, Maury Wills, easy.
00:14:08Oh, Maury Wills, I like Maury Wills.
00:14:09Yeah.
00:14:10I remember Maury Wills.
00:14:11He'd get on base most of the time.
00:14:13Junior Gilliam would come up next.
00:14:15Gilliam, right?
00:14:16And work the pitcher.
00:14:17Maury would get another base stolen.
00:14:19Oh, man, exciting.
00:14:21That's when baseball was baseball.
00:14:23Let me drive.
00:14:24No, I'm driving, I'm good.
00:14:25No, I want to drive this time.
00:14:26I'm still feeling good.
00:14:27You've been driving all day,
00:14:28I want to drive, come on.
00:14:30I'm driving.
00:14:31Hey, Oliver brought the bus to my house,
00:14:32I want to drive.
00:14:33Yeah, but you couldn't even
00:14:34back it out of my driveway.
00:14:35Half the reason I'm here with you.
00:14:37Half the reason.
00:14:38Why, why?
00:14:39I'm a driver, so I'm driving.
00:14:40Let's go.
00:14:41Come on.
00:14:42Fuck.
00:14:54Look how fast the world is moving.
00:14:57I know.
00:14:58This is a semi-truck passing us on a hill.
00:15:01On a hill, right.
00:15:03You're not in any hurry in this thing.
00:15:05No.
00:15:07Makes me realize how wound up I am, you know?
00:15:10It's like...
00:15:11So now you see it's a good reason
00:15:13you came on this trip.
00:15:14You know what?
00:15:15If you're going to drag my ass to Phoenix,
00:15:17we got to get ourselves a good bottle of scotch.
00:15:21Look how good.
00:15:23A nice shot of scotch it tastes.
00:15:25Once we get out of this relic.
00:15:26I'll tell you what,
00:15:27since you're doing the driving,
00:15:28I'll buy you a good bottle of scotch.
00:15:30Elevation sea level.
00:15:32What is sea level?
00:15:33How can you be elevated at sea level?
00:15:35I was born in Louisiana,
00:15:36so how do I know what water level is sea level?
00:15:38Well, that's why.
00:15:39Right.
00:15:40Phoenix, 241.
00:15:42We're making time, baby.
00:15:44Oh, shit.
00:15:45241 at 20 miles?
00:15:47Of course.
00:16:06Oh, shit.
00:16:37Hey, Auggie.
00:16:40Wasn't one hell of a drive today, man.
00:16:45Yeah.
00:16:49That shit takes longer every year.
00:16:54I don't know.
00:16:55I don't know.
00:16:56I don't know.
00:16:57I don't know.
00:16:58I don't know.
00:16:59I don't know.
00:17:00I don't know.
00:17:01I don't know.
00:17:02I don't know.
00:17:03I don't know.
00:17:04I don't know.
00:17:06Auggie.
00:17:16What the hell?
00:17:18What is that?
00:17:36Hey, Auggie.
00:17:40Auggie.
00:17:51Jesus.
00:18:05Jesus.
00:18:36Oh.
00:18:42You sleep well?
00:18:44Like a rock.
00:18:46And you?
00:18:48Not too much, no.
00:18:50Because of this?
00:18:52What the hell is that?
00:18:54It's a breathing machine.
00:18:55It blows air.
00:18:56I have sleep apnea.
00:18:57Otherwise, I snore like a banshee.
00:19:00Ask my neighbors and they'll tell you.
00:19:02Well, you're lucky you live alone, man.
00:19:04Because that thing is noisy.
00:19:08Well, I'm sorry.
00:19:09I'm sorry.
00:19:10I mean, that's all I can say.
00:19:11I'm sorry.
00:19:12I'm sorry you didn't sleep.
00:19:13I'll drive today, okay?
00:19:15So you can sleep in the car.
00:19:17Yeah.
00:19:18Hey, I was just checking my e-mails.
00:19:20And I got to get back.
00:19:22I got to get back to L.A.
00:19:23I got to get back to the agency.
00:19:25Why?
00:19:26There's a thing going on.
00:19:27Look, I checked the...
00:19:28We just left yesterday.
00:19:29I know.
00:19:30I know.
00:19:31I got to get back to this account.
00:19:32To be on the road for almost a week or more.
00:19:34Yeah, well...
00:19:35What?
00:19:38I'm a little surprised we made it this far to begin with.
00:19:40So I wasn't really prepared to be gone for a week or more,
00:19:43to be truthful with you.
00:19:44I took one look at that bus.
00:19:45I just figured maybe downtown L.A.
00:19:48At the most, San Bernardino.
00:19:49I never thought we'd get this far out of L.A.
00:19:53You know, I...
00:19:54You know what?
00:19:55I hate to admit this.
00:19:56I'm kind of embarrassed for you.
00:19:57Did you really think all those things
00:20:00after agreeing to go with me?
00:20:02And you know why I want to go?
00:20:04It's not because I want to sit in a bus for six weeks.
00:20:06It's because I told you my friend asked me to do this.
00:20:09And you agreed.
00:20:10Then let's...
00:20:11I tell you what.
00:20:12We'll get on a plane, fly to New Orleans.
00:20:13It's not the same.
00:20:14And we'll do what you got to do.
00:20:15It's not the same, Joey.
00:20:16But a couple days, we're done.
00:20:17It's not the same.
00:20:19He asked me to drive it to New Orleans.
00:20:26I'm embarrassed.
00:20:27I got to get...
00:20:28I guess I'm pissed, too, really.
00:20:31Damn, man.
00:20:33Hey, I got an e-mail from Lindsay,
00:20:35and I probably should be back there.
00:20:37You know what?
00:20:38Suddenly, I don't believe you anymore.
00:20:40I'm going to tell you the truth.
00:20:41I think you're lying.
00:20:43To your eyes.
00:20:44Eyeball to eyeball, I think you're lying.
00:20:47Because of that fabricated story you fabricated.
00:20:51I think you're lying.
00:20:53You know what?
00:20:54Call her.
00:20:55I know.
00:20:56Lindsay, call her.
00:20:57Let me hear Lindsay say to you you have to get back.
00:21:02How does Lindsay know whether I need to be there or not?
00:21:05She's an assistant.
00:21:06She knows more about what you're doing than you do.
00:21:07All right, I'll call Lindsay.
00:21:08Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:21:09Cancel that.
00:21:10What?
00:21:11Cancel it.
00:21:12Just cancel it before it rings.
00:21:14If she says she doesn't need you, we continue on.
00:21:19I'll talk to Lindsay.
00:21:20No, on speakerphone.
00:21:21I know it has a speakerphone.
00:21:23You can shoot down a satellite with that goddamn thing.
00:21:25All right, come on.
00:21:28Ah-ha.
00:21:29Good morning.
00:21:30Justin from the FAYS office.
00:21:32Hi, Lindsay.
00:21:33Joey here.
00:21:34How you doing?
00:21:35Hey, Joey.
00:21:36Are you working from home again today?
00:21:40Hey, I was wondering about the Sculling account.
00:21:43How's that going?
00:21:44What do you mean how's it going?
00:21:45It's on hold, remember?
00:21:48Yeah, but did they take the storyboards and look at them?
00:21:52Storyboards?
00:21:53Joey, we don't have storyboards.
00:21:54They haven't even decided if our team's getting the job.
00:22:00Okay.
00:22:01Very good.
00:22:02Thank you.
00:22:03Okay.
00:22:04Bye.
00:22:05Bye.
00:22:09Do you know what I'm going to do right now?
00:22:13I'm going to take a royal piss.
00:22:16You fuck.
00:22:17God.
00:22:19Goddamn.
00:22:22Take your ass back to L.A.
00:22:24Shit.
00:22:25Hey, you're never going to make it through the...
00:22:52You're never going to make it through the...
00:23:2340 miles.
00:23:25Not bad.
00:23:52I looked down at the speedometer here and it said 70, almost 75 miles an hour.
00:24:02That sign that we just drove by that says, the radar sign, it said 53.
00:24:21Hey baby, how you doing?
00:24:22Yeah.
00:24:23Those cookies were fantastic.
00:24:24Yeah, they were great.
00:24:25Okay, I gotta go.
00:24:26I gotta go.
00:24:27Yeah, we're somewhere in Arizona.
00:24:28Okay.
00:24:29I gotta go.
00:24:30Bye.
00:24:31Hand me a water, will ya?
00:24:32Need to wash your pee-pee hands.
00:24:50You need to wash your pee-pee hands.
00:24:53Wash your pee-pee hands.
00:25:05So what's in the box?
00:25:08I don't know.
00:25:10I haven't opened it yet.
00:25:13You haven't looked in the box?
00:25:15No.
00:25:16Well, let's open it.
00:25:18Because, no, I can't.
00:25:20He wants me to open it when I get to New Orleans.
00:25:27There's more to this trip every day.
00:25:31What else is there he hasn't told me?
00:25:34That's why I want you to go with me.
00:25:36So you don't know what's in the box?
00:25:38No, I don't.
00:25:40When I open the box and find out what's there,
00:25:42I would like you to be there with me.
00:25:44Because you're as dear a friend to me as Oliver was.
00:25:48Can you handle that?
00:25:49I can't handle that.
00:25:50You can't handle that?
00:25:51No.
00:25:52It's too intimate.
00:25:53Oh, man.
00:25:57But you are my friend. You are, you are.
00:26:00I feel that. I appreciate that.
00:26:07You know, I don't want to sound stupid or anything, you know, but...
00:26:12Everybody must have some sort of a blue bus trip.
00:26:15You know, something they haven't done, huh?
00:26:29All right, my friend.
00:26:31I love you.
00:26:33You fuck.
00:26:41I love you.
00:27:04Have some fun, man.
00:27:05Take your hand up slowly.
00:27:11Be nice.
00:27:13No, stiffen your hand. They're going to bite your finger off.
00:27:15Oh, Jesus.
00:27:17What happened to the tough guy I know?
00:27:20Oh, Jesus.
00:27:25Uh-oh.
00:27:28They prefer you. Look at that.
00:27:37He's licking your scalp.
00:27:39I got that son of a bitch off my ass.
00:27:41That's all I got to say.
00:27:43I wish I had...
00:27:45I wish I had a cap.
00:27:47So, listen, are we going to stay in really down-home hotels?
00:27:51I'm picking the next spot.
00:27:53We'll talk about it.
00:27:54Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.
00:27:56Don't stop, don't stop. Stop.
00:27:59I know where I'm going.
00:28:01No, you don't.
00:28:03We got off over there.
00:28:04We're going to get back on over there.
00:28:06We'll be back on the interstate.
00:28:07I'm out of problems.
00:28:09You have no sense of direction.
00:28:10Yes, I do.
00:28:11You can't even get to my house without calling for help.
00:28:14Okay.
00:28:15Which way is north, dummy?
00:28:17I can see the goddang interstate from here.
00:28:20We're stuck.
00:28:21We're stuck.
00:28:22We're stuck.
00:28:23We're stuck.
00:28:24We're stuck.
00:28:25We're stuck.
00:28:26I can see the goddang interstate from here.
00:28:28Where's the other?
00:28:29You can't see the interstate from here.
00:28:31We're lost.
00:28:33Let me drive.
00:28:34Go back and ask that guy where we are.
00:28:45My cousin in Portland had his prostate removed.
00:28:48And his number spiked all of a sudden.
00:28:51He had his removed within a year.
00:28:53It's not quite a year yet.
00:28:55So he and his wife were just beside themselves thinking, uh-oh.
00:28:59But you were pronounced clear, weren't you?
00:29:02Yeah, I was.
00:29:03But my number spiked after we found out about him.
00:29:07So it really shook me.
00:29:09Got you thinking.
00:29:10Got me to thinking.
00:29:12And I thought, you know what?
00:29:15I'm in the third act of my life.
00:29:18Yeah.
00:29:19Right?
00:29:23He's in there, isn't he?
00:29:24He's in there, right.
00:29:25Exactly.
00:29:26So is he in there?
00:29:27I have no idea.
00:29:28Come on.
00:29:29Just don't turn on any fans when I open the box.
00:29:32Come on.
00:29:33Because he'll be all over the place.
00:29:35No, no.
00:29:36Come on.
00:29:37Seriously.
00:29:38I don't know what's in the box.
00:29:39You haven't looked.
00:29:40I haven't looked.
00:29:41He asked me not to.
00:29:42What if those were his ashes, dude?
00:29:43It could be.
00:29:55When I left Florida, I never looked back.
00:29:56That old Dago shit, I didn't want any part of it, man.
00:29:57All those family dynamics and things.
00:29:58What do you mean, that old Dago shit?
00:29:59What do you mean by that?
00:30:00One of my brothers was dating a gal that wasn't Italian, and they were having issues with
00:30:01him.
00:30:02Really?
00:30:03Yeah.
00:30:04Interesting.
00:30:05That's one of the reasons I left the world.
00:30:06Because of that bullshit.
00:30:07Boy, you got the white collar, you got the black collar.
00:30:08You know what I'm saying?
00:30:09Yeah.
00:30:10You know what I'm saying?
00:30:11Yeah.
00:30:12You know what I'm saying?

00:31:21Yeah.
00:31:22You know what I'm saying?
00:31:23Yeah.
00:31:24You know what I'm saying?
00:31:25Yeah.
00:31:26You know what I'm saying?
00:31:27Yeah.
00:31:28You know what I'm saying?
00:31:29Yeah.
00:31:30You know what I'm saying?
00:31:31Yeah.
00:31:32You know what I'm saying?

00:31:48You know what I'm saying?
00:31:49Yeah.
00:31:50You know what I'm saying?
00:31:51Yeah.
00:31:52You know what I'm saying?
00:31:53Yeah.
00:31:54Tiger Woods.
00:31:55Absolutely the number-one athlete in the world.
00:31:57Maybe of all time.
00:31:58He's a golfer,
00:31:59I don't consider those guys athletes.
00:32:01Well, how about a soccer player,
00:32:04never stops running.
00:32:05Yeah.
00:32:06Okay so he's running,
00:32:07that's..
00:32:08They're good,
00:32:09but they have all their other players.
00:32:10Yeah.
00:32:11But they never stop running and leaping and jumping.
00:32:12Yeah.
00:32:13He's got other guys that he can count on on a bad day.
00:32:14Teygar has nobody.
00:32:15Teygar, what other athlete in the world has changed his sport?
00:32:18Jackie Robinson, one.
00:32:20Oh, he changed everything, didn't he?
00:32:22Yes.
00:32:23Joe Louis, two.
00:32:25OK.
00:32:26Should I go one?
00:32:27A couple of black guys, OK.
00:32:28Tiger Woods, three.
00:32:30I understand who he is.
00:32:31I say I admire him, but it's the game of golf
00:32:34I have a problem with.
00:32:35You want to know about some trivia I heard?
00:32:37Yeah.
00:32:38You know why you play 18 holes of golf?
00:32:40Because you've got nothing better to do.
00:32:42The reason that you play 18 holes of golf
00:32:44is that when they invented the game, for each hole,
00:32:47they took a shot of scotch or whiskey.
00:32:50And you know how many shots there are in a fifth of whiskey
00:32:52or scotch?
00:32:53No.
00:32:5418.
00:32:55No kidding.
00:32:56Yes.
00:32:57That's brilliant.
00:32:58We should test that theory tonight.
00:33:00Well, we should, yeah.
00:33:02I mean, you ever think why you don't play 16, 17, 21, 32,
00:33:06whatever, whatever?
00:33:07Don't go there.
00:33:08Why do you have nine innings of baseball?
00:33:09Why do you have four quarters in football?
00:33:11I don't know.
00:33:12We're going to test that theory.
00:33:16You know, when I became a Dodger fan,
00:33:18when I was about six or seven, was
00:33:20when I was playing in my grandmother's backyard.
00:33:24My Aunt Lorraine was listening to the broadcast
00:33:26of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and they
00:33:29were talking about Jackie Robinson
00:33:31being acquired in play.
00:33:33That's when I became a Dodger fan.
00:33:35We used to take newspapers and roll them up very tight,
00:33:39about this wide, about, I don't know, four inches wide,
00:33:42and take twine and roll it around, roll it around,
00:33:45roll it around, roll it around.
00:33:46It tied knots so that you had a solid object.
00:33:49That was our baseball.
00:33:51And we'd go in the middle of the street,
00:33:54and we'd draw a home plate, or we'd put an old garbage
00:33:56can down, or whatever.
00:33:58We just fielded any team we could field.
00:34:00But we were playing baseball in our own way,
00:34:02you know what I mean?
00:34:04Because we played ball on the street all the time.
00:34:06You got home from school, you threw your books anywhere,
00:34:08and you couldn't get out there fast enough to play
00:34:10until it was time to eat.
00:34:11That's true.
00:34:12And that's what we did.
00:34:13Exactly.
00:34:14George Carlin did a bit about raising kids today, you know?
00:34:19Yeah.
00:34:19He goes, whatever happened to a kid who sat in the front yard
00:34:25with a stick?
00:34:26With a stick.
00:34:27Right?
00:34:28And he dug a fucking hole.
00:34:29He doesn't even know why he's digging the fucking hole.
00:34:31Right.
00:34:32But he's sitting there, and he's sitting there,
00:34:33and at some point, he looks at the stick and goes,
00:34:35why am I holding this fucking stick?
00:34:37And he's sitting there next to a hole with a stick,
00:34:39and he doesn't even know why he's there.
00:34:40But he's been out there for hours.
00:34:42Right.
00:34:43Right.
00:34:44Kids don't do that anymore.
00:34:45No, they don't.
00:34:46I'm afraid not.
00:34:48No, they don't.
00:34:49I'm afraid not.
00:34:50Right now, I'm probably at the only place in the entire world where you can go to the
00:35:20planet that I can wear this shirt.
00:35:22I was about to say, it's a good color. It's a good color on you.
00:35:26Yeah, well, don't get used to it.
00:35:32Welcome to New Mexico.
00:35:33The land of the children.
00:35:37Hot chili peppers.
00:35:38All right.
00:35:39Hot chili peppers and cold beans.
00:35:41Oh, shit.
00:35:42All right.
00:35:44And his two brothers, Homer and Poochie, were merchant marines, World War II.
00:35:52Poochie?
00:35:53Poochie.
00:35:54Some of the names, man. Some of the names.
00:35:56You know, Boogie Red, Bebolo, Snag, Icky Bicky Green.
00:36:00Oh, there was Four Eyes.
00:36:02There was Crip, because he was crippled.
00:36:04There was Limpy, because he had a limp.
00:36:08My cousin Donald, Duck.
00:36:10My brother Wesley, because he's got, he's red.
00:36:12He's got a reddish complexion.
00:36:14Red.
00:36:15And everybody's got a dick.
00:36:16Who was yours?
00:36:17Earthworm.
00:36:20Fuck you, too.
00:36:23Earthworm!
00:36:24Oh, fuck you.
00:36:25I shouldn't have told you that.
00:36:27Fuck.
00:36:28All right, Earthworm.
00:36:29I wasn't thinking.
00:36:30You just came out.
00:36:32I'm searching for being honest.
00:36:34God damn it.
00:36:35Why?
00:36:37Because you're the guy that's afraid you're the stick
00:36:39digging a fucking hole.
00:36:42That's why whenever I heard Louis Armstrong singing
00:36:45Back to Night on the jukeboxes,
00:36:47I thought it was a song about New Orleans.
00:36:50Because he sings about Lottie Lincoln,
00:36:52Sweet Lucy Brown, Back to Night.
00:36:55All those nicknames, I swear to God,
00:36:57I thought it was a song about New Orleans, man.
00:37:01Yeah.
00:37:02Until I was grown and I realized it came from
00:37:04a fucking opera written by these German guys
00:37:06in 19-fucking-33.
00:37:08But all those guys were on their street cars
00:37:09and roaming there.
00:37:10Absolutely.
00:37:11Because everybody had a fucking nickname, man.
00:37:13Yeah.
00:37:14Really.
00:37:18So the story goes that one day,
00:37:20somebody bet Wilford that he wouldn't punch
00:37:22the next guy that walked in the bar
00:37:24in the fucking jaw for five dollars.
00:37:26I was thinking it was two dollars.
00:37:28Wilford said, you offered me, betting me two dollars,
00:37:31that I won't punch the next motherfucker
00:37:33in the jaw.
00:37:34Bet.
00:37:35Wilford's standing inside the bar,
00:37:36enjoying tea.
00:37:37The door opens, and he hauls open it.
00:37:40Cole Cox, the guy who walked through,
00:37:43the guy who stumbles onto the street
00:37:45and falls down.
00:37:46It's his fucking nephew, Gerald.
00:37:53He fucking Cole Coxed him
00:37:55and collected his money
00:37:56and never fucking apologized.
00:37:59Fucking, it was a bet.

00:39:52There's a hurricane coming, oh fuck a hurricane, let's drink
00:39:59My last Christmas home with my mom, I was in a den watching television or something
00:40:03And she was in the kitchen cooking
00:40:05Put Christmas gumbo cooking in the day before, a big, huge pot of gumbo
00:40:10So I walked into the kitchen
00:40:12I said, hey mom, how you doing?
00:40:14She said, I'm alright baby
00:40:17She's cooking and stirring a pot
00:40:19And I said, do you like Johnny Mathers?
00:40:21She said, oh yeah, he has a beautiful voice
00:40:23I said, yeah I know
00:40:24And then I said to her, you know what mom, people say that when I sing I also sound like Johnny Mathers
00:40:30She's stirring a pot without even looking up
00:40:33She said, oh boy, you never could sing
00:40:37It was like she said, give me that jar of pepper up on the shelf
00:40:41You know what I mean?
00:40:43The phone's ringing, answer the phone
00:40:46The phone's ringing
00:40:52What do you do with that?
00:40:54You know, what do you do with that?
00:41:04You always like to wonder
00:41:08Born a free man
00:41:11Been on this road
00:41:14Since you don't know when
00:41:18You may be more lost now
00:41:21Than you've ever been
00:41:25But you will find
00:41:28Your way home
00:41:32Again
00:41:38It was in your mind
00:41:41Go around the world
00:41:44Make yourself a dollar
00:41:48Find yourself a girl
00:41:51If you come back wild
00:41:54Now this is a hotel man, now this is a hotel
00:41:57And that's where shitholes have been standing
00:41:58You know what?
00:41:59It's a nice place
00:42:00I might give in on this one
00:42:01This is a nice place
00:42:02I might give in on this one
00:42:03Because this one looks like it has a little bit of history
00:42:04This is classic
00:42:05You know?
00:42:06This is classic

00:42:11You know what?
00:42:12My only hope is they don't have a golf course
00:42:15I think they do
00:42:21There might be some bodies buried around here
00:42:23First of all, what was that lady saying about
00:42:25There was a ghost or something up here?
00:42:27Oh, Rebecca
00:42:29Rebecca, yeah
00:42:30Guests at the lodge in the early 1940s
00:42:33That's World War II, baby

00:42:5830 years you guys wanted to do this
00:43:00My grandmother used to say everything happens for a reason
00:43:02So maybe this is the time I would really enjoy it
00:43:04And maybe the reason you came with me is because
00:43:07This is the only time in your life that you could really enjoy
00:43:11Well, I'll tell you what
00:43:12What?
00:43:13Thank you, Oliver

00:43:22Crawfish races
00:43:25You don't think we're going to have an event and not do them, right?
00:43:27When I was a kid, we used to go out early and find a spot

00:43:32My grandmother would bake a ham that was
00:43:35I don't know, when I was a kid it seemed like this big, right?
00:43:37And homemade biscuits and homemade pies
00:43:40And we'd spend the day on the neutral ground
00:43:42We didn't have a lot of money
00:43:43So our costumes were usually a jeans and a cowboy shirt and a straw hat
00:43:46We were cowboys for the day
00:43:48My grandpa, he was in a Cajun band
00:43:50He was in the Lake Charles Ramblers
00:43:52Every Saturday night we would go two-step and waltz
00:43:55Everything about Mardi Gras is just incredible
00:43:57It really is
00:43:58Do you miss New Orleans?
00:44:01Absolutely

00:44:29We've got to go hear some Rebecca stories, right?
00:44:31Who's going to tell those Rebecca stories?
00:44:35Rebecca
00:44:41Do you refer to Rebecca as Rebecca?
00:44:45Or as a spirit? Or a ghost?
00:44:48She's Rebecca to me
00:44:51Really?
00:44:52She's for real

00:45:41In this room

00:57:43Yeah
00:57:44Yeah
00:57:45Yeah
00:57:46Yeah
00:57:47That's one of my memories as a child before I left here, my uncle Andrew, the fisherman
00:57:48who was always making nets –
00:57:49Yeah
00:57:50Yeah
00:57:51And any chance he had he was out fishing, right or crack fishing or crabbing –
00:57:52Mm-hmm
00:57:53… sometimes he would take us with him.
00:57:54Mm-hmm
00:57:55That's what we do.
00:57:56See that little boy sitting on that yellow drum?
00:57:57That's what we do, hold a fishing pole.
00:57:58This is Louisiana.
00:57:59This is the Louisiana I would remember as a child with my uncle Andrew.
00:58:00Hey, you know what, I feel like I'm a new man, Baby.
00:58:01with you in Louisiana, drinking beer, smoking cigar.
00:58:05I will drive 2,000 miles to do that with you.
00:58:09Thank you.
00:58:10You're welcome, Bubala.
00:58:13To New Orleans.
00:58:15Seriously, thanks for thinking of me.
00:58:18How long has it been since you've been back here?
00:58:21Oh, jeez.
00:58:25I left when I was 17.
00:58:27You haven't been back since?
00:58:28Nope.
00:58:30Oh.
00:58:31Why not, man?
00:58:32I wanted to get away.
00:58:34There's too much stuff I couldn't deal with.
00:58:38So I left.
00:58:40Quit high school.
00:58:43Joined the military.
00:58:46Finished my education in the military.
00:58:49I even missed my mother's funeral.
00:58:52Really?
00:58:53Yeah.
00:58:55How old were you when your mom died?
00:58:5819.
00:59:00You couldn't get back to the funeral?
00:59:01Well, no.
00:59:02I was in Saudi Arabia at the time, stationed there.
00:59:04I mean, you know what?
00:59:05I could have fought to come back.
00:59:06I really could have got on my knees and begged
00:59:08and went to the company commander,
00:59:10whatever and whatever, called the Red Cross.
00:59:13You know, I could have got an emergency leave.
00:59:15But I just didn't want to come back.
00:59:18I was feeling a lot of anger, guilt, all those things
00:59:23mixed in together, you know?
00:59:25Pot of spaghetti, wet spaghetti, how do you untangle that?
00:59:27You know what I mean?
00:59:28Yeah.
00:59:32So listen.
00:59:35Joey.
00:59:36Yeah?
00:59:39Let's sing a song.
00:59:41Sing a song.
00:59:42I love it when you sing.
00:59:43What do you want me to sing?
00:59:45Whatever this place does to you.
00:59:48Let me hear the tune.
00:59:48I don't know what it means.
00:59:58That's a good song.
00:59:59Yeah, I love that one.
01:00:00Sing that.
01:00:01I'm going to teach you the first line.
01:00:02Of what?
01:00:03That song.
01:00:03How to sing it?
01:00:04Yeah.
01:00:04I've never sung.
01:00:05I'll do this.
01:00:05Come on.
01:00:06OK.
01:00:07Out of respect for you and New Orleans.
01:00:09I'm going to sing.
01:00:09I've never sung in my life.
01:00:11But you know what?
01:00:12Who's going to hear me down here?
01:00:14Only you.
01:00:15We're singing to the gods.
01:00:16Here we go.
01:00:17It's the love for New Orleans you can't lose.
01:00:29Good old drink.
01:00:32Good old food.
01:00:34Everybody's happy and they're singing too.
01:00:39It's the love for New Orleans you can't lose.
01:00:44By the way, there's bread coming out of your ears.
01:00:50All right, let's do that song one more time.
01:00:52I've got to sing, right?
01:00:53No, no, no.
01:00:54I want to ask you a question.
01:00:55Is this where you sing?
01:00:56No, I want to ask you a question.
01:00:57No, no, no.
01:00:58I want to ask you a question.
01:00:59What?
01:01:00How's a cooking girl going to deal with this?
01:01:02Bite me.
01:01:06It's the love for New Orleans you can't lose.
01:01:17We've got a full tank of gas, four hours.
01:01:19We'll have to stop the car three or four times
01:01:21because you've got to always pee.
01:01:22Well, hey, I've got to pee and you've got to light a cigar.
01:01:25If you have to pee, I'll be giving you a bottle today.
01:01:27I just get to New Orleans.
01:01:28Pee in a bottle.
01:01:29That's what black folk had to do through the south years ago.
01:01:33I'm serious.
01:01:34What?
01:01:36That's how it is.
01:01:37Yeah, yeah.
01:01:38For us, like maybe other people.
01:01:39You've never experienced that?
01:01:40Yeah.
01:01:41Man, back in the 50s, you drove through the south.
01:01:43Forget it.
01:01:44You could buy gas and you could buy candy at a store,
01:01:48but you couldn't use the restrooms.
01:01:50I was traveling with my cousin, and his wife was pregnant,
01:01:53so both our wives were pregnant,
01:01:55riding in the backseat of this,
01:01:56I think it was like a 54 Chevy or something we had.
01:01:59It was my cousin's car.
01:02:01So the gas station attendant had come out, white guy,
01:02:04and I said, where's your restroom?
01:02:07And he said, oh, we don't have a restroom for colored.
01:02:10And I told my cousin, do you have enough gas?
01:02:12He said, yeah.
01:02:13I said, take the nozzle off.
01:02:15And they said, oh, no.
01:02:16And I said, no.
01:02:17No, I'm not giving this guy my money.
01:02:19To hell with him.
01:02:21The next town we came to, we stopped at this store.
01:02:23We bought a large jar of mayonnaise, wiped it out,
01:02:27and that was a pea jar for them.
01:02:29What year was that?
01:02:301960.
01:02:32Wow.
01:02:33People forget, man.
01:02:34When we shopped in New Orleans when I was a kid,
01:02:37we could buy clothes, but we couldn't try them on in the store.
01:02:40But we couldn't use the dressing rooms.
01:02:42It was for whites only.
01:02:48When I was a kid, it cost 7 cents to ride the bus in New Orleans.
01:02:52But it was segregated.
01:02:53There was a screen.
01:02:55So whites sat in front of the screen, blacks sat behind.
01:02:58And there were places you just couldn't go?
01:03:00French Quarter.
01:03:02That's Bourbon Street?
01:03:03That's Bourbon Street, yeah.
01:03:04You couldn't go there?
01:03:05If you were an entertainer, you could go as an entertainer.
01:03:08But you couldn't turn around and go through the front door
01:03:10and sit down as a patron and eat at a table in a restaurant.
01:03:14Because when my father was overseas,
01:03:16I remember my mother had to get a job
01:03:19because the money he was sending us wasn't enough.
01:03:21So the only job she could find was as a dishwasher
01:03:25at a very famous restaurant called Galatoire's.
01:03:29And the only way she could get that job was for whites only.
01:03:33She became passable.
01:03:35My mother looked like a white woman.
01:03:37When I was a kid, the only people who were allowed
01:03:39to collect garbage were whites.
01:03:42Or drive buses.
01:03:44Whites only.
01:03:46There weren't any jobs for colored people in New Orleans
01:03:49when I was a kid.
01:03:50Very few.
01:03:52It's hard to just be an individual
01:03:54in the African-American community
01:03:56because whites expect you to act a certain way
01:03:59because they really don't know who we are, to be honest.
01:04:02And certain African-Americans expect you to act a certain way.
01:04:09For instance, when I read about a crime
01:04:11and it's been committed by a black person,
01:04:14the whole black community is affected
01:04:16because the white people look at the whole black community
01:04:20as if they perpetrated that crime.
01:04:23We didn't blow up a building in Oklahoma.
01:04:25You know what I mean? Yeah.
01:04:27We didn't hook up a white boy with a chain
01:04:29and drag him behind a pickup truck while he was alive.
01:04:32And as we drove, his body was disintegrated.
01:04:35We didn't do those horrible things.
01:04:37And I'm saying that because when that happened,
01:04:39the black race didn't look at the white race and say,
01:04:42you did that.
01:04:43We looked at the individuals who did that.
01:04:45But when you turn that camera around,
01:04:47the whole black race is looked down upon.
01:04:51And you can feel it in the air when you go places.
01:04:54And that's just embedded in your generation.
01:04:57I don't know if it's changed that much.
01:04:59I really don't think it's changed that much. I really don't.
01:05:02After a while, you see a pattern.
01:05:05And a pattern tells you something after a while.
01:05:08You see rain clouds after a while, you know it's going to rain.
01:05:12That's what I'm saying. Yeah, exactly.
01:05:15No, it's not going to rain. Forget that.
01:05:17Just give me my $20. I'm going to get the $20.
01:05:20You know what? What?
01:05:22Look at the sky, right? Yeah.
01:05:25You say no rain in New Orleans this weekend?
01:05:27None. None. None.
01:05:29But if a one drop of rain...
01:05:31No, no, no, no, no, no.
01:05:33If it rains this weekend...
01:05:35No, no, no, you fuck. I know what you're going to do.
01:05:37I know what you're doing. No, no.
01:05:39If it rains, though, with the bed, right?
01:05:41Not one drop of rain. No, no, no.
01:05:43The bed was not one drop of rain.
01:05:46The bed was rain or no rain.
01:05:48Let's define rain right now, because I want my $20.
01:05:51All right? Okay, let's define rain.
01:05:53All right, what is rain?
01:05:55Water hits these windshields. What do you call that?
01:05:57That's not rain.
01:05:58That might be a bird pissing up in the air.
01:06:00Water falling out of the sky is rain.
01:06:02How much water and for how long?
01:06:04Intermittent thundershowers is what I said.
01:06:06Is it rain that ruins the weekend? The answer is no.
01:06:08I didn't say ruin the weekend.
01:06:11Baton Rouge, 38 miles.
01:06:13Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
01:06:15Yeah, man, huh? Yeah.
01:06:17I can't believe I'm down here.
01:06:19I don't know why I was so resistant.
01:06:21I've always wanted to come down here.
01:06:23I don't know why I was resistant.
01:06:25It was how we were getting down here.
01:06:27And look, you drove all the way.
01:06:29Thank you. Thank you.
01:06:31B-B-B-B-B!
01:06:33Right now, let's just say, don't let a year go by
01:06:35where we don't go somewhere in the blue bus.
01:06:38Don't sound like Ollie.
01:06:40Don't sound like Oliver, man.
01:06:42No, seriously, come on. This has been great.
01:06:44We should just plan, we should just take a week,
01:06:46put it on our calendar, one weekend of the year,
01:06:48pick a spot, go in the blue bus.
01:06:50In the blue bus.
01:06:52As uncomfortable as it is.
01:06:54Bring the pee bottle.
01:06:56Ah!
01:07:02That's a bayou.
01:07:04See, look, we're over the swamp now.
01:07:06This is swamp land.
01:07:08Nothing but water down there, snakes and alligators.
01:07:10Yeah, look at that, man.
01:07:12You know, you get off this main road right now,
01:07:14you can go 10 feet off the highway,
01:07:16and you may never be seen again.
01:07:18That's true.
01:07:20And look, you can go in there in the little p-roll.
01:07:22Uh-oh.
01:07:24What's the matter?
01:07:26Uh-oh.
01:07:28You gotta be kidding me.
01:07:30What's wrong?
01:07:32I don't know what's wrong.
01:07:34Pop the clutch.
01:07:36You got gas?
01:07:38Yeah, gas.
01:07:40But I don't have any transmission.
01:07:42Are you serious?
01:07:44I'm serious.
01:07:46No, I am serious.
01:07:48Holy shit.
01:07:50I got engine.
01:07:56Holy shit.
01:08:00Oh, man, this is not a good place to be.
01:08:04Oh, shit.
01:08:10Something just popped under here.
01:08:12Oh, shit.
01:08:34You know how long this fucking thing goes for?
01:08:42I don't know.
01:09:12Uh-uh.
01:09:24You know what I say?
01:09:26What I'm thinking?
01:09:28That we...
01:09:34Here's what I'm thinking.
01:09:36We catch the flight out of Baton Rouge...

01:14:28Alright.
01:14:29Alright.
01:14:30How can I come to New Orleans?
01:14:49When I was a kid, that lady used to have a cow, used to get fresh milk, and that was
01:14:53a polling place my father voted.
01:14:55This guy here was one of the cleaners.
01:14:58He sponsored the Little League team, which I didn't make.
01:15:02I didn't have those skills.
01:15:03You gotta be able to run, hit, and throw.
01:15:06Right.
01:15:07That was my grandmother's house right there.
01:15:09You see where that water heater is?
01:15:11That was the crapper when I was a kid.
01:15:17Right down the street is Roman and to the right, that's where Oliver lived.
01:15:22Right over there is Oliver?
01:15:23Yeah.
01:15:24You see that pink house in the corner?
01:15:25Yeah.
01:15:26When I first saw Oliver, see the first step after the vacant lot there with the debris?
01:15:31Uh-huh.
01:15:32And I was sitting in the stroller in front of the step, and Oliver's mom pushed him across
01:15:36the street right here, and I saw him for the first time being pushed across the street.
01:15:42That's when I first met Oliver.
01:15:44Hey.
01:15:45We were in strollers.
01:15:46Wow.

01:15:52Yeah.

01:16:28Huge oak trees.
01:16:29Yeah.
01:16:30All this, you know, metal stuff you see now.
01:16:32Kids playing, crickets.
01:16:34And this is where my mother would ask me to comb her hair, sometimes, you know.
01:16:38She'd take out a comb, and she'd sit here, and she'd scoot around a little bit, and they're
01:16:41still chatting.
01:16:42Da-da-da-da-da.
01:16:44And she'd just walk by and say, how you doing, ladies?
01:16:45Dopping her hat, and I'm combing her hair.
01:16:52And she said, thank you, baby.

01:30:17I've walked the Champs-Élysées and rode through London town.
01:30:27There's no place like New Orleans.
01:30:32That's where I'd rather be.
01:30:38When I'm home in New Orleans, that's where c'est la bombe.
01:30:58I've strolled on Waikiki and stood by the fountains in Rome.
01:31:09But there's no place like where I'm from, the city I call home.
01:31:20There's no place like New Orleans.
01:31:26That's where I'd rather be.
01:31:31When I'm home in New Orleans, that's where c'est la bombe.
01:31:50I dig the jazz on Bourbon Street, jamming all night long.
01:32:00Bop-a-dee-dop.
01:32:02If you want the best to eat, there's no place like New Orleans.
01:32:12Bop-a-dee-dop.
01:32:14If you want the best to eat, go to Café Du Bon.
01:32:24There's no place like New Orleans.
