00:00Award-winning actress Sue Johnston received a star-studded welcome as she was given the
00:05freedom of Liverpool at a special ceremony on Tuesday night.
00:08It's overwhelming, just thinking, are you sure? Me? Blimey. So I was really, it was
00:17amazing and I'm just proud. Sorry, my family have arrived. And so, yeah, I just, it's very
00:28hard to put into words. It's incredibly emotional, it means an awful lot and it's something I
00:34will never ever forget. I'm so proud because I love this city.
00:38Sue, best known as Sheila Grant in Brookside and Barbara in The Royal Family, received
00:43the award at Liverpool Town Hall.
00:45I love its own history but I love the history it gave me. You know, my memories, my memories
00:52of coming here with my mum and dad, of going over to New Brighton because my auntie lived
00:57in Wallasey. We used to go over and back and tour on the ferry.
01:01In attendance were comedians Johnny Vegas and Joe Wilkinson, LFC, Legends, Kenny Dalgleish
01:06and John Barnes, as well as Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham and Andy Burnham.
01:10I was a tax officer in Liverpool, which I was really bad at, but used to go to the cavern
01:17every day. So I was around and I went to work for NEMS and I had all that Mersey sensational
01:26music time.
01:28Born in Warrington, Sue grew up in Prescott getting her first taste of acting at a drama
01:32group at Pilkington Glass where she was also working. Sue's first television appearance
01:37was on the cobbles of Coronation Street in 1982.
01:40Brookside and to be here and all the time, back and to, watching Liverpool and they have
01:46given me so much joy. But the people, you know, I a queen, she, Barb and occasionally
01:57Sue.
