Sir Keir Starmer has discussed plans to grow the economy, help university students and stop small boats crossing the English Channel, with supermarket workers in Wiltshire. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves joined the Labour leader on the visit, and said, "I know the numbers for inflation came down today, but those higher prices seem to be locked in, and we need to bring some stability back to the economy". 00:00So my question is, how do you plan to tackle the rise in theft and abuse against shop workers?
00:08This is such an important issue, it's already come up this morning, it's come up in other
00:12places. We have to crack down on it and there are two or three things I think we can do
00:15straight away. Firstly, a more accurate defence to protect those working in retail, in our
00:23shops, because it's not just the shoplifting, it's also the abuse and the threats that come
00:28with it if you try to intervene.
00:30We need to get a grip on the cost of living. The numbers for inflation came down today
00:36but those higher prices seem to be locked in and we need to bring some stability back
00:40to the economy so that people, particularly on lower incomes and fixed incomes, including
00:44pensions, that the money goes as far as it needs to to cover things.
00:48Do you have any plans to help out any students in terms of anything?
00:55Firstly, on student fees, they're very high, they don't really work well for students or
01:01for universities. Now, I'm not going to pretend to you that we've got a sort of magic wand
01:07for you to bring out the day after the election and to make all the troubles go away, but
01:12we do need to look for a better way of doing that. Many students say to me that we're
01:17suspected by the cost of living prices of everybody else. We've got to pay our energy
01:20bills, we've got to get our food, we've got to pay all our other things. So, stabilising
01:26the economy, which is Rachel's number one mission, so that we never have to go through
01:31a cost of living crisis again, will massively help students.
01:34How do you plan to tackle illegal immigration?
01:37We need to stop the boats coming across the channel.
01:40How do you plan to do it?
01:42We need to take down the gangs that are running this. So, the people who are getting in those
01:46boats are paying a lot of money to criminal gangs who are making a fortune getting them
01:53there and getting them in the boats. And those gangs need to be taken down. If we take those
01:58gangs down, we can stop this.
