Derbyshire Times Love your local feature - The Duke Chatsworth Road
Transcript
00:00Pubs have been a cornerstone of our local communities for centuries, offering a place
00:11for people to meet together and socialise, as well as providing thousands of jobs and
00:16a cornerstone of the local economy.
00:18Here we go behind the bar to meet the people who run our pubs and say why it's important
00:22for you to love your local.
00:24So I've met the Duke for his latest Love Your Local, and so if you could introduce
00:27yourself.
00:28I'm Santiago Perez, I'm the owner of the Duke of Brampton pub on Chatsworth Road.
00:35We took the pub over in October last year, we shut it down in January and then reopened
00:42in April, just in time for Easter, it was refurbed and renamed as the Duke.
00:47Do you employ many staff?
00:48Yeah, we've got eight staff, four full time, we've got another venue, Brampton Social Club,
00:57we've got operations manager Matt Linus, he operates all the three venues we have.
01:02Then we've got Gretchen Davis who's a manager, she manages both, and she's got a team of
01:06supervisors and very capable members.
01:11What beers do you sell and what would be your most popular beer?
01:15Popular beers are a lot of lagers, Asahi in here is really popular, Cruz Campo is taking
01:22the world by storm at the moment, although it's been around for quite a bit.
01:26And Guinness is doing really well at the moment, so we've got a great range, I think it's something
01:31to suit every palate.
01:33Apart from beer, what else do you sell?
01:37We've got cocktails, we've got a nice cocktail menu, but also we've got a great range of
01:41wines for everybody's taste.
01:43Do you do food or anything?
01:46We will be doing food, we're going to be working with buddies from Matlock, the Unremarkable
01:53Hair, they're going to be doing a Thursday and Friday night pop-up, and on the weekends,
01:59Saturday and Sunday, we're going to be doing a breakfast until two o'clock.
02:04So what do you reckon makes this pub?
02:08We're reinventing it in a way, it's been open and shut a few times at the moment, it's quite
02:13well known on the Chatsworth Road, but we've got heavily showing sport, I don't think there's
02:19really a dedicated sports bar on Chatsworth Road, so we're going heavily down the sports route.
02:27What we're finding is Brampton Mile is very popular at the moment from people from all
02:32over the UK.
02:34We get visitors from Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester, doing the Brampton Mile, and on
02:40Saturday nights, just groups of girls, guys, mixed groups, just enjoying the great pubs
02:46we've got on here.
02:47Something for everybody.
02:48The Duke was originally, when I remember, it was called the Red Lion, which was always
02:52a good pub, it's a good sized pub, a lot of locals in here, it probably lost its way,
02:58shut down for a bit, changed its name a few times, and I think it just needed a bit of
03:04TRC, so hopefully that's what we're doing, and enjoying the hospitality on Brampton.
03:09We've had a good start to the Duke, we've had a couple of bank holidays, which have
03:15done really well, we've got the Euros now, which have proven really popular, we've got
03:19four TVs in here, three large TVs, and an area where you can see the TV anywhere in
03:25the room.
03:26Have you got any more future plans?
03:30Probably get this one right, make sure we get the food offering right, and then see
03:34what comes along with developing a fan zone at Chesterfield Football Club, so that's the
03:40next project on the agenda, but the main focus at the moment is the Duke.
