Sheffield City Council has porposed to extend a 20mph zone across nearly all residential streets of the Brincliffe and Nether Edge area. It would mean nearly every residential road in the south-west quarter of the city would become a go-slow area. The Star asked residents what they thought of the plans.

00:03 as I came down here to Sharrow Lane to talk about a proposed tip-off I heard that they were going to
00:08 turn this area into a 20 mile per hour zone for cars, just so happened while I was here,
00:14 someone handed me the letter saying "yeah we're proposing to do this and we'd like to hear your
00:17 thoughts. City Council's proposed to change the speed limit to 20 mile per hour in Brincliffe."
00:21 So I came down here for the exact same purpose, let's speak to residents about what they think.
00:26 Well I've lived around here for 30 odd years, just down the road from here, so I'm right in the
00:31 middle of that plan and I've thought for a long long time that the speed limits ought to be lowered.
00:38 The roads around here are all relatively narrow and there is always parking either residents
00:45 or people who park here during the day and commute into town and I think you need to drive no more
00:53 than 20 miles per hour around here to be safe, so I'm all in favor. Is this a matter of people
00:58 sort of casually just going over 30 and the number of cars or is it people really flaunting it and
01:04 going boy racing style for example? What's the mix? I think it's a combination of all those things.
01:09 I'm afraid there's too many people I think who drive in suburban areas who see the speed limit
01:17 as a minimum requirement rather than an absolute limit. Some people will perhaps just be in a
01:24 hurry, I get that, and they need to get to school to pick up their child or something,
01:28 I appreciate that, but what's another minute or two on the journey truth be told?
01:32 You know when I first came down here I just thought it was a tip off to do with just
01:36 Sharrow Lane and possibly Montgomery Road but now I'm looking at the map in full it really is the
01:40 entirety of Brincliffe. This is nearly all of Salter Lane all the way down to Edgebrook Road
01:46 and nearly everything in between and that's sandwiched between the existing 20 mile per
01:50 hour zones they had just leading off of Sharrow Vale Lane and another part of the town I can't
01:56 tell just by glancing. I think that there's a lot of evidence that properly used 20 mile
02:03 hour zones can be really useful and helpful, safer for kids, safer for pedestrians, so yeah I don't
02:09 have a problem with it if there's enough evidence that shows that it's going to make a difference.
02:14 I just saw you pull up and that came off of the roundabout there, do you see any troubles with
02:17 the transition from the roundabout onto the road? Yeah there probably will be but people get used to
02:21 it don't they and you know there's a lot of traffic issues, I think people get angry about
02:26 this issue when it's possibly not to do with this issue it's to do with something else so let's look
02:31 at does it help calm the traffic, does it make a difference and then let's do it or have a
02:36 you know where I live we had a six month trial of cutting Barcher Lane. Yes, yes the other one I know.
02:43 That was very controversial, I was in favour of it remaining but actually the democratic decision
02:51 in the council was no that wasn't right because they looked at the evidence so I'm happy you know
02:54 I think our councillors can take a good view of that sort of stuff.
