00:59 Infliction is the scariest game that no one talks about.
01:01 A relentlessly oppressive, horrifying dive into domestic issues, alcoholism, regret,
01:07 demonic rituals, possession, murder, and vengeful spirits.
01:10 Now if you thought PT was terrifying, then you need to experience Infliction.
01:15 It's a game where the average, almost mundane suburban home becomes a hellmouth, one created
01:20 through dark design and nefarious deeds.
01:22 A spouse murdered for sacrifice, but to what end?
01:25 Well, that won't be spoiled here, but the house and its offshoots that you explore in
01:29 Infliction are truly the things of nightmares.
01:40 What starts out as just walking around a seemingly normal house, with the odd noise here and
01:45 there, and a passing shadow, quickly devolves into terror and madness while always keeping
01:50 things just on the edge of reality and sanity.
01:53 The impeccable audio design on display in Infliction is what sets this game apart from
01:57 its contemporaries, with each groan, creak, scream, and breath feeling palpable as your
02:02 hairs stand on end all throughout this demonic, illusory house.
02:13 Wild Burger Hospital - Tormented Souls
02:26 Hospitals in horror games are not fun places to be, whether that be the traditional hospital,
02:31 a mental hospital, or some other variant.
02:34 Tormented Souls' central locale just so happens to be a hospital, Wild Burger Hospital
02:39 to be specific.
02:40 Apart from sounding like some sort of hip and trendy plant-based sandwich restaurant,
02:44 Wild Burger is a deeply moody and ominous gothic Victorian mansion that, of course,
02:49 just so happens to be a nightmarish hospital.
02:52 Unfortunately for protagonist Caroline Walker, she finds herself at this creepy location
02:57 in hopes of figuring out what happened to some twins that she learns about from a cryptic
03:01 photograph.
03:02 Wild Burger is brimming with horrifying elements, from the likes of the decaying and blood-spattered
03:07 walls to mutilated bodies to unholy monstrosities that must be put down with a nail gun and
03:13 plenty more.
03:14 There's truly not much here that seems pleasant to experience.
03:25 USG Ishimura - Dead Space Is it just me or are spaceships scary places
03:40 even in non-horror games?
03:42 Perhaps it's the stark and sterile feel, perhaps it's how unknown and mysterious
03:46 they are, or perhaps in Dead Space's case it's the fact that the USG Ishimura is littered
03:51 with necromorphs who want to devour your flesh and completely ruin your day.
04:01 Everyone's favorite stompy boy Isaac Clarke has to spend way too much time alone aboard
04:05 the USG Ishimura, and it's clearly gone to his head.
04:09 This utterly terrifying, now defunct mining ship, aka the Planet Cracker, has so many
04:14 dimly lit hallways and corridors with just enough ambient lighting that all it really
04:19 needs is a table for two, a couple of roses, and a nice dinner for a necromorph couple
04:24 to share a romantic evening.
04:25 There's just really no feeling safe as you explore this spacecraft since everything seems
04:30 to just want to kill you.
04:31 The USG Ishimura has become such an iconic locale because of its sense of place and atmosphere
04:36 of pure dread.
04:46 Abbott State Penitentiary - The Suffering
04:57 The Suffering's Abbott State Penitentiary is a downright terrifying hellish abode for
05:01 all things nightmare fuel.
05:03 Sure, prisons, jails, penitentiaries, and the like are typically scary in any horror
05:08 game, but Abbott State really ups the ante here.
05:11 In The Suffering, you step into the ominous shoes of Torque, a new death row inmate who
05:15 has been sentenced for allegedly murdering his family.
05:18 As Torque explores the labyrinthian halls, cells, and corridors of Abbott State, he comes
05:23 up against aberrations that are meant to be representations of various death sentences,
05:28 from lethal injection, to being sent to the gallows, to inhumane laceration bloodletting,
05:33 and tons more.
05:34 While Torque does have the weaponry and grit to deal with these monsters, especially when
05:38 he turns into a monster himself via the game's insanity meter, there's just no denying how
05:43 scary Abbott State truly is.
05:45 It's dark, foreboding, maze-like, covered in blood and bodies, and it doesn't help that
05:50 Torque can have hallucinations that will make you jump out of your seat.
06:01 Abbott's Department Store, Condemned to Criminal Origins
06:13 When you think of scary horror game locations, it's unlikely that a department store comes
06:18 to mind first.
06:19 But what if I told you that this department store has been long abandoned, is completely
06:24 decrepit, is covered in old Christmas decor, is teeming with junkies who want to smash
06:28 a rebar in your face, oh and well, also it's full of terrifying mannequins, some of which
06:33 might just move on their own and come attack you.
06:36 Yeah, that definitely changes things a bit I think.
06:45 Well such is the case with Bart's Department Store from the highly enjoyable and often
06:49 overlooked horror game Condemned Criminal Origins.
06:52 Exploring this department store is consistently harrowing because nothing really is as it
06:56 seems.
06:57 You just never feel safe.
06:58 As you try to find and investigate the matchmaker serial killer's nefarious deeds in this locale,
07:04 you'll always be on the edge.
07:05 Seriously, beware the mannequins, especially the ones in the creepy Santa hats.
07:20 Riverfield's Mortuary - The Mortuary Assistant
07:33 The Mortuary Assistant is a masterclass in subtle horror, especially when it comes to
07:37 its central location, namely Riverfield's Mortuary.
07:41 Instead of just relying on cheap scare tactics, The Mortuary Assistant slowly and cleverly
07:45 ratchets up the tension, often without ever letting that tension get released.
07:50 Obviously that's why many horror games have so many jump scares.
07:53 This game however lets you go about your grim work as a mortuary assistant, no surprise
07:57 there of course, but you quickly learn that stepping foot into Riverfield's means that
08:01 you are now the host for the omnipresent demon.
08:16 In order to rid yourself of this looming possession, you must craft a sigil, latch it to a cadaver,
08:21 and burn it, but only after you figure out which demon it is.
08:25 Of course, all of this is done while you still do your preparation and embalming of the bodies.
08:30 And while all this is happening, you will likely see something out of the corner of
08:33 your eye at random spots within Riverfield's.
08:36 It's these subtle moments that make this location so phenomenal for tense horror.
08:40 You just never know what is going to be thrown your way from the demon haunting you.
08:53 The Looping Hallway, PT.
08:57 Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere.
09:08 That's really everything in PT.
09:10 The playable teaser that was to be a new Silent Hills game back in the day.
09:14 This iconic experience seeps into your brain, ensuring it doesn't let go.
09:18 Taking place in the disturbing confines of a looping L-shaped corridor, PT is the epitome
09:23 of scary.
09:24 Hearing the details about a family's murder through the dissonant radio broadcast immediately
09:29 sets you on edge.
09:30 Then it's the baby crying, the cockroaches scurrying around, the shadowy, ghostly stalking
09:35 presence of Lisa in the hallway, the bloody hanging fridge, and the ominous scrawlings
09:40 that appear on walls.
09:47 For what is basically a super short demo, PT manages to stuff an entire horror buffet
09:52 into one tiny location.
09:54 But again, it's the atmosphere of dread that permeates every footstep you take through
09:58 this looping corridor.
10:00 The location just feels alive, aware of you, and it feels deeply evil.
10:03 Sure, you might solve the confounding conundrums in order to escape this hell, but just behind
10:08 you at all times lurks the terrifying spectral presence of Lisa.
10:12 Simply put, you are never alone in PT, and this location will burn its way into your
10:17 nightmares.
10:29 House Beneviento - Resident Evil Village
10:44 The House Beneviento section of Resident Evil Village was my absolute favorite part of that
10:48 game.
10:49 It stands out from anything else in the game, heck, anything else in the entire franchise.
10:53 This spooky, gothic, victorian-esque mansion is essentially a house of horrors, not unlike
10:58 something you would walk through during the Halloween season, replete with sentient, dastardly
11:03 dolls, a wooden mannequin puzzle that's meant to resemble Ethan's now-dead wife,
11:07 Mia, decaying and peeling wallpaper, oh, and well, how could I forget, a freaking giant
11:12 baby monster, because why the heck not?
11:20 The dichotomy of the spectacularly beautiful, if haunting, view of House Beneviento on the
11:25 walk up to it, contrasted with the derelict nature of the mansion's lower levels, yes,
11:30 I'm very much looking at you, creepy well from the ring, ensures no two areas ever feel
11:35 the same in this section of the game.
11:38 It's masterfully crafted, downright terrifying and incredibly mesmerizing to explore.
11:55 Himuro Mansion Fatal Frame
12:08 Whenever I think of the first Fatal Frame game, also known as Project Zero, I can't
12:12 help but get chills down my spine.
12:14 This is mostly down to the game's central infamous location, Himuro Mansion.
12:18 This haunted, rural Japanese mansion is dripping with dread and tension.
12:23 And it doesn't help that some really, really bad things happened at this location, including
12:27 the Himuro family sacrificing people to satiate the hell gate that the mansion and its grounds
12:32 were built over.
12:33 You know, the usual stuff, right?
12:35 Due to a curse known as the Malice, the eponymous mansion haunts anyone and everyone who enters
12:39 it, and unfortunately those who met their demise there.
12:42 The staggering number of ghosts in Himuro Mansion certainly contributes to its status
12:47 as one of the scariest locations in horror games.
12:50 And the fact that you have to banish these specters with the camera obscura in an up-close
12:54 and personal fashion makes the whole affair that much more harrowing.
12:57 It's a classic example of a Japanese haunted mansion made ever more frightening by its
13:02 ominous past.
13:17 Woodside/Blue Creek Apartments - Silent Hill 2
13:29 Silent Hill 2 is one of, if not the greatest survival horror games of all time.
13:33 A game that is as disturbing as it is thought provoking, as beautiful as it is haunting.
13:38 While it would be easy to select any location from this game as the scariest, including
13:42 the likes of Toluca Prison and even the titular fog-laden town itself, for our money it's
13:47 the Woodside/Blue Creek Apartments that really stand out as the scariest.
13:51 Perhaps it's the fact that these otherwise innocuous apartments come across as both benign
13:56 and domestic, typical similar accommodations many of us have lived in.
14:00 However, it's the way in which Silent Hill 2 skews the average and mundane into something
14:04 nightmarish and otherworldly.
14:06 As James explores both the Woodside and Blue Creek Apartments, he comes up against abandoned
14:11 rooms, dilapidated hallways, odd characters such as Angela, and of course, who can forget
14:16 Pyramid Head?
14:17 I mean, who can forget that scene, you know the one, while James hides in the closet?
14:29 The way in which these two apartment buildings weave into each other, creating a tapestry
14:33 of terror, ensures these locales are stone-cold scary stalwarts.
