00:01:01 All right.
00:01:06 A story by L. Frank Baum, titled "To Be Determined."
00:01:22 Oh, Dorothy.
00:01:25 Well, what a pleasant surprise.
00:01:27 Sorry, Father.
00:01:31 I couldn't stop her.
00:01:32 Ah, yes.
00:01:33 And she opened the door to the study by herself, did she?
00:01:37 Yes.
00:01:38 I mean, no.
00:01:39 I mean, yes.
00:01:40 Yes, well, our Dorothy's such a clever dog, isn't she?
00:01:42 Yes, she's very clever.
00:01:44 [CHUCKLES]
00:01:47 What are you writing, Father?
00:01:49 It's a story.
00:01:50 I knew it!
00:01:52 Well, it's going to be a story.
00:01:55 Right now, it's just a title.
00:01:56 Well, no, it's not even a title.
00:01:58 Right now, it's just my name.
00:02:00 Is it a Christmas story?
00:02:03 Christmas story?
00:02:05 Yes.
00:02:06 Yes, it is a Christmas story.
00:02:08 Yay!
00:02:08 I love Christmas stories, and Christmas time,
00:02:11 and Christmas presents, and--
00:02:12 Christmas cookies and milk, sir.
00:02:15 Yay!
00:02:16 Oh.
00:02:18 Thank you, Wilson, but I don't--
00:02:19 Yes, Wilson brought the cookies and milk,
00:02:21 Father, to help you concentrate.
00:02:23 Oh.
00:02:25 Oh.
00:02:26 [SIGHS]
00:02:31 And we seem to have one extra glass of milk, sir.
00:02:34 That's for you, Wilson.
00:02:35 Won't you join us?
00:02:37 Oh, no, young sir.
00:02:38 I couldn't possibly.
00:02:39 Well, now, of course you could.
00:02:41 Wilson, please help yourself.
00:02:43 And a cookie!
00:02:45 Well, then, my pleasure.
00:02:48 Thank you, sirs.
00:02:49 Oh, thank you.
00:02:57 Wilson, Father was just telling me
00:02:59 about his new Christmas story.
00:03:01 Oh, how exciting, sir.
00:03:03 I do hope it's about Santa again.
00:03:06 Is it about Santa Claus, Father?
00:03:09 Well, it-- it-- it might be.
00:03:11 Yay!
00:03:11 I love Santa Claus.
00:03:13 Everyone loves Santa Claus.
00:03:15 Because he brings children presents everywhere.
00:03:17 Wilson, Santa never misses a Christmas, does he?
00:03:24 Oh, never.
00:03:25 He's a very dependable fellow, that Santa Claus.
00:03:29 Yes, he is.
00:03:30 He is, uh-- he's very dependable, isn't he?
00:03:33 Now, nothing can stop Santa Claus from delivering
00:03:35 presents on Christmas Eve.
00:03:37 Nothing.
00:03:38 Oh, no, never.
00:03:39 He's never too sick.
00:03:42 Never.
00:03:42 And he's never too tired.
00:03:45 Never.
00:03:45 He's never too lazy.
00:03:47 Ever.
00:03:48 But what if?
00:03:51 What if?
00:03:53 What if what?
00:03:55 What if something happened to Santa Claus?
00:04:01 What?
00:04:01 What-- what happened?
00:04:02 Something like what, Father?
00:04:04 Yes, yes, do-- do-- do tell us, sir.
00:04:07 Well, what if Santa Claus was Santa Nect?
00:04:12 Oh, no!
00:04:13 Oh, yes.
00:04:14 Please tell us, Father.
00:04:16 Yes, please, do tell us, sir.
00:04:18 Well, if you insist.
00:04:24 Now, as everybody knows, Santa Claus lives in a place
00:04:28 called the Laughing Valley.
00:04:30 I didn't know that.
00:04:31 Did you know that, Kenneth?
00:04:33 Of course.
00:04:35 Laughing Valley, what a funny name.
00:04:38 Why do they call it the Laughing Valley, sir?
00:04:41 Well, it's called the Laughing Valley because everything
00:04:44 and everybody in it is so happy, they just can't help
00:04:47 but laughing all the time.
00:04:49 The brook chuckles, and the wind giggles,
00:04:53 and the trees guffaw, and the wildflowers chortle.
00:04:56 Oh, how lovely.
00:04:58 I don't remember the last time I chortled.
00:05:02 Me neither.
00:05:04 Now, in the Laughing Valley is where you'll find
00:05:06 Santa's huge, magical castle.
00:05:09 And all of his helpers live there, the rills and the nooks
00:05:13 and the pixies and the fairy, they all live there,
00:05:16 and they're busy as can be, from one year's end
00:05:18 straight through the other.
00:05:20 What's a rill?
00:05:21 What's a nook?
00:05:23 I know all about pixies and fairies,
00:05:26 but I don't remember ever hearing anything
00:05:28 about rills and nooks.
00:05:31 They're creatures of the Bersi forest.
00:05:33 The Bersi forest?
00:05:35 Well, perhaps if the two of you paid attention,
00:05:38 you might find out.
00:05:40 Now, as I was saying.
00:05:43 And so our story begins right here,
00:05:45 for something very big is drawing near.
00:05:48 (Sleigh bells)
00:05:50 (Sleigh bells)
00:05:52 (Sleigh bells)
00:05:54 (Sleigh bells)
00:05:56 (Sleigh bells)
00:05:58 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:00 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:02 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:04 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:06 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:08 (Sleigh bells)
00:06:10 (Beeping)
00:06:12 So what do you think, Boggie?
00:06:14 I called the gift-a-pole.
00:06:16 It's pretty great, huh?
00:06:18 It's something.
00:06:20 Santa's gonna love it.
00:06:22 Instead of putting gifts in people's chimneys,
00:06:24 he can just aim the gift-a-pole, and then...
00:06:26 Whabam!
00:06:28 Present delivered.
00:06:30 (Beeping)
00:06:32 Do you want to help me load up another test present?
00:06:37 Don't you think it'd be better
00:06:39 to take your gift-a-pole outside?
00:06:41 That's a great idea. We can test its distance.
00:06:44 Listen, Wisk, shouldn't you be wrapping the presents
00:06:46 and not whabamming them around?
00:06:48 This is your job.
00:06:50 You gotta get to work on those crates.
00:06:52 I got ten more just like 'em, lined up.
00:06:54 More balls?
00:06:56 These are, like, impossible to wrap.
00:06:58 Hey, the kids asked for 'em.
00:07:00 I just make 'em, all right?
00:07:02 Fine. But just you wait, Boggie.
00:07:04 One day, everyone in the Laughing Valley
00:07:06 is gonna know my name.
00:07:08 And not for wrapping tape conservation.
00:07:10 Sure. Dream on, paper boy.
00:07:13 You see, Wisk had a dream so big,
00:07:15 it could be a hassle.
00:07:17 And as much as he tried, it didn't fit in the castle.
00:07:20 But he was not alone in his holiday struggles.
00:07:23 No. Wisk had friends.
00:07:26 There was Kilter the pixie.
00:07:28 She was in charge of the Christmas mail.
00:07:30 Out of the way!
00:07:32 Precious children's letters to Santa coming through.
00:07:34 Watch it, eh?
00:07:36 (♪♪♪)
00:07:39 (♪♪♪)
00:07:41 And lastly, there was Nutter, a nook,
00:07:46 keeper of that which grows and feeding the animals.
00:07:49 (♪♪♪)
00:07:51 Oh, hi, Kilter.
00:07:58 No time, Nutter.
00:08:00 Gotta get these Christmas letters to Santa.
00:08:02 A-S-A-P.
00:08:04 (♪♪♪)
00:08:07 (♪♪♪)
00:08:09 Hey, paper boy.
00:08:25 Did you make this thing?
00:08:27 Yeah, I did. It's my gift to Pol.
00:08:29 It's for when Santa asked me to help him
00:08:31 deliver Christmas presents this year.
00:08:33 You?
00:08:35 I never asked you to help me deliver presents.
00:08:37 Don't quit your day job, Wisk.
00:08:39 Yeah, I'd say stick to wrapping,
00:08:41 but you're not even good at that.
00:08:43 Yeah, well...
00:08:45 Toy making isn't so special.
00:08:47 Anyone can make a hula hoop.
00:08:49 It's just a circle.
00:08:51 (Gasps)
00:08:55 Oh, no!
00:08:57 Oh, sorry, Boggy. Are you okay?
00:08:59 Mm.
00:09:01 (Beeping)
00:09:03 Please report to Santa's office.
00:09:06 Now.
00:09:08 Did you hear that? Sounds important.
00:09:10 I guess Santa does need me.
00:09:12 Holly, you are looking absolutely festive today.
00:09:19 Hmm.
00:09:21 Sit down.
00:09:23 Okay.
00:09:25 Hey, what happened with you?
00:09:27 Blinky.
00:09:29 Did you look at him directly in the eyes?
00:09:31 I told you he'd take that as a threat.
00:09:33 But at least you fed him this time.
00:09:35 That's it, Holly.
00:09:39 The last of the letters to Santa.
00:09:41 They're neatly organized by paper quality
00:09:43 and how much I like the picture on the stamp.
00:09:45 Huh.
00:09:47 But I thought there were a lot more.
00:09:49 Here, you drop this.
00:09:51 Whoa.
00:09:53 What happened to you, Blinky?
00:09:55 I don't know about you guys,
00:09:59 but I've got a feeling today's the day.
00:10:01 I think Santa's gonna ask me to join him on his sleigh this Christmas.
00:10:04 You got all my request letters, right, Holly?
00:10:07 I have the pile right here.
00:10:10 Next to Nutter's medical claims
00:10:14 and Kilter's personal lost and found.
00:10:18 I forgot all about that!
00:10:20 My retainer! You guys!
00:10:24 What else is in here?
00:10:28 Santa!
00:10:30 Wisk! I'm so glad you're here.
00:10:33 And your friends, too.
00:10:35 They'll all want to hear this.
00:10:37 I'm pretty sure I know.
00:10:39 I need you to--
00:10:41 To help you deliver all the Christmas presents this year.
00:10:43 No. I need you--
00:10:46 To help you deliver some of the Christmas presents this year.
00:10:49 Wisk, oh, you know that delivering the presents is Bronte's job.
00:10:54 Push, push! Come on, that's it!
00:10:56 Good one, good one, good one!
00:10:58 Yeah, come on, come on! Get it up there, get it up there!
00:11:00 Push, push! All right, all right!
00:11:02 [grunting]
00:11:04 [cheering]
00:11:06 I know, but I was hoping you'd have something for me to do.
00:11:10 As a matter of fact, I do.
00:11:13 My sleigh needs a good clean.
00:11:18 Oh, as soon as you're finished wrapping the presents.
00:11:21 Careful not to rip the paper.
00:11:23 Oh, you don't want any of the children peeking.
00:11:27 Okay, Santa.
00:11:29 Regret, will you please stop checking?
00:11:38 No one is coming to visit us.
00:11:41 No, I understand. I was just--
00:11:43 I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss anybody passing by.
00:11:46 'Cause, you know, I just--
00:11:48 I'd hate for you to miss the opportunity to invite someone in.
00:11:52 No one ever comes to visit us.
00:11:55 Just look at our guest book.
00:11:58 [sniffing]
00:12:00 Not a single visitor.
00:12:03 And why not? We got loads of great stuff here.
00:12:07 Oh, like what, Envy?
00:12:09 Rocks! Look at this rock.
00:12:12 People should be lining outside our door to see this rock.
00:12:17 Maybe they are, but, like, our doorbell isn't working.
00:12:20 You know what? I'll go check.
00:12:23 Man, I wish I was this rock.
00:12:27 This rock has everything!
00:12:31 And he's always rubbing it in!
00:12:34 Yeah, the doorbell's fine.
00:12:39 Will you both stop! Just stop!
00:12:43 No one comes to visit us because we're no-gooders, huh?
00:12:46 And they don't understand the no-gooders' way of life
00:12:50 and my desire to destroy everything I don't like.
00:12:53 Regret! You're always so gloomy about the choices you make.
00:12:57 Well, I don't know if I would say that, but--
00:13:00 And Envy, you're envious of everything!
00:13:03 They don't come visit us because they want to be happy.
00:13:09 Everyone in the Laughing Valley is so happy.
00:13:12 And do you know why everyone is so happy?
00:13:15 Because of Christmas, you nitwit!
00:13:18 Rocks?
00:13:20 Santa Claus brings the children toys
00:13:23 and puts a nice big smile on their face.
00:13:26 It's just awful. Truly. I hate it.
00:13:29 And you know what?
00:13:31 They don't come visit us with all that happiness swirling around.
00:13:34 But, boss, how are we gonna get people to visit our cave?
00:13:37 Christmas comes every year!
00:13:39 You're right, Envy. That's why this year we need a new tactic.
00:13:42 - A what? - Blackboard.
00:13:45 Okay.
00:13:47 Thank you.
00:13:52 Well, it's been 1,000 years,
00:13:54 so clearly the silent treatment isn't working.
00:13:57 We need something else. Suggestions?
00:13:59 Rocks! I mean, sharks!
00:14:02 Man, I wish I was a shark.
00:14:04 Such lovely teeth.
00:14:06 When have you ever seen a shark in a cave?
00:14:09 I... I was thinking maybe we could just, like,
00:14:14 invite people. Politely.
00:14:16 No. Not inviting.
00:14:18 Especially not politely.
00:14:20 We're telling!
00:14:22 Manipulation, boys.
00:14:31 Tomorrow we'll infiltrate Santa's castle
00:14:34 and convince him to cancel Christmas.
00:14:36 Without it, everyone in the Laughing Valley
00:14:39 will be so miserable without their precious Christmas gifts
00:14:42 that they'll be flooding our caves
00:14:44 and hate Christmas just as much as we do!
00:14:47 (laughing)
00:14:49 (laughing)
00:14:51 (laughing)
00:14:53 (laughing)
00:14:56 (clock ticking)
00:14:58 (clock ticking)
00:15:00 (clock ticking)
00:15:02 (music playing)
00:15:04 How does this sleigh get so dirty?
00:15:15 Santa only uses it for one day.
00:15:18 What the?
00:15:20 Is that mustard?
00:15:22 My bad!
00:15:24 I organized the bottles from soap to polish
00:15:27 to what I was going to put on my sandwich later.
00:15:30 Hey, Wisp, you missed the spot.
00:15:33 (laughing)
00:15:35 I think that's just a shadow.
00:15:37 Why do we get stuck with all the boring jobs
00:15:40 like washing the sleigh and wrapping presents?
00:15:42 We could be doing so much more.
00:15:44 You're right.
00:15:46 I could be more than just a mail pixie.
00:15:49 I could deliver other things too.
00:15:51 Like flowers?
00:15:53 Or pizzas!
00:15:55 At least you don't have to clean up after reindeer.
00:15:58 I just wish Santa would give us a chance.
00:16:00 I don't want to be wrapping presents,
00:16:02 I want to deliver them.
00:16:04 And the closest thing I've got to this sleigh is washing it.
00:16:07 Why do you want to deliver Christmas presents so badly anyway?
00:16:10 Because I love Christmas more than anyone.
00:16:13 And I just want to help Santa make everyone happy.
00:16:16 But Wisp, we do help, like me with the letters.
00:16:19 Someone's got to water the plants
00:16:22 and animals don't feed themselves.
00:16:24 Yeah, I guess you're right.
00:16:27 One day you'll get your chance, Wisp.
00:16:30 But for now, let's just make this sleigh sparkle, okay?
00:16:33 Look at them.
00:16:41 They're so cute.
00:16:43 Ugh! Gross!
00:16:46 Come on, let's put our perfectly maniacal plan into action.
00:16:50 [chuckling]
00:16:53 Hello!
00:17:10 Merry Christmas to you!
00:17:12 We were hoping to apply for jobs at your fine establishment.
00:17:16 You would like to apply for jobs here?
00:17:21 Today?
00:17:23 Yeah. Why not?
00:17:26 We were hoping to help Santa make Christmas the best it could possibly be.
00:17:31 Uh...
00:17:33 Stop!
00:17:36 Gentlemen, or whatever you are,
00:17:40 I'm afraid Santa's rather busy today.
00:17:43 It being Christmas Eve and all.
00:17:46 So I'm afraid he won't have time to interview you.
00:17:51 Gumdrops!
00:17:53 I've always got time for someone who wants to help out on Christmas.
00:17:58 [laughing]
00:18:00 Well then, let us manipulate--
00:18:02 convince you that we're perfect for the job.
00:18:05 So, why is it you want to work here in my castle?
00:18:12 Well, I'd rather work in the mall.
00:18:15 What's a mall?
00:18:19 It's a place where toys are made by machines and then sold for money.
00:18:24 You know, the more that I think about it,
00:18:27 you don't get paid for all the hard work you do, do you?
00:18:31 Doesn't that make you feel...
00:18:34 envious?
00:18:36 Why, the happiness of children is the only payment I need.
00:18:41 Figures.
00:18:43 And what are some of your weaknesses?
00:18:47 I work too hard. I mean, I work too hard.
00:18:51 You look like you work too hard yourself, am I right?
00:18:54 In fact, you should take a vacation.
00:18:56 Oh, that sounds like a nice idea!
00:18:59 Starting today.
00:19:01 On Christmas Eve?
00:19:03 Yeah, there's no time like the present.
00:19:05 And what are some of your...
00:19:08 And what are some of your... strengths?
00:19:12 Strengths. Strengths, strengths, strengths.
00:19:15 I have so many strengths.
00:19:18 Uh, well, karaoke.
00:19:21 Um, rock collecting.
00:19:24 So many, too many.
00:19:26 Mmm, these are good.
00:19:36 Wow.
00:19:38 See, why bother making toys for ungrateful kids
00:19:41 while you can just cancel Christmas,
00:19:43 stay at home, and eat cookies all day, huh?
00:19:47 You look like you could eat some of these.
00:19:50 Sorry to be the fly in your Christmas pudding,
00:19:55 but, uh, you are rather petite.
00:20:00 [music]
00:20:02 [music]
00:20:04 [music]
00:20:06 Yeah, these toys are pretty nice.
00:20:09 But wouldn't you rather just keep them?
00:20:11 Think about it. If you cancel Christmas,
00:20:13 you could keep all the toys to yourself.
00:20:16 Choo-choo!
00:20:19 Let me repeat the question.
00:20:22 If you could be any animal, which would you be?
00:20:27 Well, we'll keep your resumes on file.
00:20:30 Oh, thanks for coming by, but, well, Holly's right.
