Drew Dalton, CEO of ReportOUT, discussing the Flag in the Map exhibition at The Bridges in Sunderland.
Transcript
00:00So Drew, we're down here at the Flag in the Map exhibition. Can you explain a bit about what it's about?
00:05Absolutely. So it was a partnership between ourselves at Report Out and the Gilbert Baker Foundation in the USA.
00:11We asked the public around the world to send in their photographs of the Pride flag or any similar flag to it and what it meant to them.
00:18And we got over 200 plus applications and we had to narrow it down to less than 50 to make this exhibition of chosen images and the book that went with it.
00:27So what you see around us here today is you see photographs from over 40 plus different countries from people telling their real lived experiences about what life's like for them.
00:38From living in Shanghai to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to the world's biggest trans flag here in the UK.
00:46There's all sorts of stories behind the lives that we see lived really around the globe.
00:52And it goes on show from Saturday as part of the month long Pride in Sunderland celebrations.
00:57And it's a great way for people to come down and learn more about what it means to be part of that community, doesn't it?
01:03Well, absolutely. And we're really connected, aren't we, globally?
01:06We move around the world. We travel around the world. We're refugees around the world.
01:10We're connected as an LGBTQI plus community.
01:13And what a great way to understand that and explore the lives of other people in another country that might be similar or different to that of your own.
01:21And we really thank everyone for helping us to pull this together with Out North East and Grand Central who have helped to sponsor this too.
