This Family Spent Almost P2M for This OFF-THE-GRID Native Beach House

Take a tour of this off-the-grid native beach house in Camarines Sur. A breezy house close to nature and oozing with the kind of charm only wooden materials can give. This not so tiny house comforted a family of five during the pandemic. Probably, it's the depression or having little interest in doing things among the little ones.

But why off-grid living?

When it comes to living off the grid, it's hard to pack up your life from the city and move to a place with no running water, no electricity, or road access. But then you probably haven't met people like Antonette and Emmanuelle.

The couple invested around 1.5 to 2 million pesos on the main house, and look at what they've accomplished.

Step inside and see for yourself. (And, uhh, the beach!)

00:08 Hi OG! Welcome to our beach house!
00:11 [Music]
00:21 We found this lot through online and this is special to us because it's a beach lot property.
00:28 And my family loves the beach, so right away we became interested in this area.
00:34 Let's go inside. I'll show you around.
00:37 [Music]
00:41 This area right here, this is the place of our caretaker.
00:46 This is the playground area of my kids.
00:51 We decided to make the floor sand so that in case of a fall, the sand won't be that hard.
01:00 And this is Lippy, our family dog.
01:05 He just came from swimming. He's just there drying his fur.
01:09 [Music]
01:11 This area, he started from the smaller one right there.
01:16 It's supposed to be, we'll just make it, put our baby's crib, but it's big inside.
01:22 That's why we decided to make a tiki hat inspired bed.
01:28 So this is a house, and the tables and chairs are made of pallets.
01:36 The first time we arrived here at home, the feeling was different.
01:42 It was like joy, contentment, because even though the house is not big, it's not extravagant.
01:51 Because our materials are very simple, but the feeling of "we're home,"
01:56 the joy I saw in my son's face, it's not going to be the same.
02:03 This is our fire pit area.
02:06 When we want to barbecue, some beautiful sunlight, and stuff like that,
02:10 this is where we stay.
02:12 The stool is actually one of my husband's projects.
02:17 He cut the stool and then they made a mold for the cement.
02:22 There, it became a chair that complements the rest of the house.
02:27 The design of the house was inspired from a trailer truck.
02:32 Since we don't have a trailer in the area,
02:36 we have decided to use concrete, hardwood, and bamboo.
02:41 Because they are the only accessible materials in the area.
02:44 This is our main house, and one of the unique features of our house
02:48 is this five-fold wall that is made of wood and bamboo.
02:53 We decided to make the wall like this
02:56 because we want natural breeze and light to enter the house.
03:05 This is our dining area.
03:06 The main material for our dining table is bamboo as well,
03:12 just like the other parts of the house.
03:14 The main reason we decided to move here is because of the pandemic.
03:20 Especially because we have three kids.
03:22 We saw that our children were affected because of the pandemic.
03:27 That's why we decided to move here, for their safety.
03:31 In this area, our sofa is made of bamboo.
03:37 We decided to make the sofa thicker
03:43 because it can also be used as a bed at night.
03:46 The main doors of our house are made of glass sliding doors.
03:58 We put reflective tint so that you can still have the outdoor feel
04:03 even if you're in the porch area.
04:05 In this area, this is the room for our kids.
04:09 This is our main bedroom.
04:18 It's a queen-size bed made up of bamboo.
04:22 Instead of installing curtains, we used bamboo blinds
04:28 because it's easier to clean.
04:31 Unlike curtains, you still need to wash it.
04:34 This one, you just need to wipe it.
04:36 We also put an open closet made up of wood.
04:41 I think my wife bought it online.
04:44 This is our kitchenette.
04:50 [clatter]
04:52 The tabletops are made of concrete and the shelves are made of concrete.
05:00 Our cabinets are made of aluminum with a wood finish
05:05 so that it still looks native.
05:07 This is our main bathroom.
05:16 The walls of the bathroom are made of concrete
05:20 because it's always wet.
05:22 My favorite part of the house is the kitchen
05:27 because I love cooking.
05:30 I searched Pinterest for the kitchen design.
05:34 I designed it the way I really like.
05:37 This is my favorite part of our house, the kitchen
05:41 because I love to cook.
05:44 It's made up of concrete, the flooring and the countertops are made of concrete.
05:50 My wife did the swing.
05:53 The lighting in the kitchen is made up of bakawan.
06:01 We did the DIY on the bulbs.
06:05 This is the main kitchen.
06:08 We added a main kitchen because our kitchenette is small.
06:13 We installed brick ovens for pizzas.
06:17 These are our two burners.
06:20 We added the grill area when we moved here.
06:24 This is our project with one of the locals here who is constructing.
06:29 This is our laundry area.
06:32 We installed these swings so that when my kids are waiting for me to wash,
06:39 they can stay here.
06:42 This is our viewing deck.
06:48 My husband did this project when we moved here.
06:51 At night, when we want to stay here,
07:04 we put the bamboo blinds down so that we can have privacy in this area.
07:12 We used this wall for our viewing deck.
07:15 At first, it looked plain.
07:18 That's why I decided to do this project so that the wall has an accent.
07:23 The total lot area of the place is 417 square meters.
07:33 The total cost of the main house is around 1.5 to 2 million pesos,
07:37 including the solar.
07:39 The reason why the total cost is so high is because
07:43 the location is hard to get in.
07:47 It's far from the city.
07:49 Plus, it's rush.
07:51 It adds to the budget.
07:53 We finished this house in three months.
07:57 We have a plan to rent this house so that other people can experience
08:01 living in an off-grid location and an off-grid house.
08:05 Especially when the kids return to face-to-face classes,
08:09 we'll be back in Manila.
08:11 What makes this place unique is that we are experiencing an off-grid kind of living.
08:18 It means that when we moved here,
08:21 we didn't have electricity or water supply.
08:24 That's why we installed solar for our electricity
08:28 and water from the deep well.
08:33 I think the majority of people who build houses
08:36 don't really follow the budget.
08:39 Once you rush to construct,
08:43 the cost really increases.
08:47 While you're building the house,
08:50 sometimes you have additional ideas or you want to change something.
08:56 You should know how to play with materials that are available in your area.
09:02 We have the materials available here,
09:06 but we can adjust them there.
09:08 That's important.
