00:03 Back pain, and when you're hurting,
00:06 minutes can feel like hours.
00:07 So today, it's all about fast relief.
00:10 I'm revealing my 60 second back pain fixes.
00:13 Aileen's gonna start us off.
00:14 How does back pain affect your day?
00:16 - It slows me down.
00:17 I have three kids and in the morning it's tough.
00:19 I'm sore, low back pain.
00:21 It's just annoying, pretty much.
00:23 - All right, let's start our first 60 second time.
00:25 Count, now go ahead and move the second bar over there.
00:27 It is compre compress.
00:29 Now again, all these things work really, really fast,
00:31 which I'm talking about them.
00:32 Compre compresses are pretty cool.
00:34 It's an old treatment, but very effective.
00:36 - Never heard of it.
00:36 - You can, in the old days,
00:37 they used to get the bags and soak them,
00:39 and all this kind of stuff.
00:40 It's called a knit back.
00:41 I don't know how many have heard that,
00:42 but because of its healing and mending properties.
00:44 If that phrase ever catch your ear.
00:47 So it's not critical,
00:48 but come under the label compre ointment.
00:50 You put it on top of one of these cheesecloths,
00:53 and it'll decrease swelling and inflammation.
00:55 But what you gotta do is take this,
00:57 just feel it and describe it to everybody.
00:58 It's got a little stickiness to it.
01:00 - Oh yeah, it's a little sticky.
01:01 - You put that right over where it hurts.
01:03 That cheesecloth with the compre on it,
01:05 right over where it hurts.
01:06 Super simple to get in this ointment form right now.
01:08 - Where do you buy that?
01:09 - They said it's sit there.
01:10 They have at all food stores.
01:11 I'm seeing it in grocery stores now as well.
01:13 Of course, you can always get them online.
01:15 Super simple, super fast, which is why I like it.
01:17 You want another 60 second fix?
01:19 - Absolutely.
01:19 - Come over here.
01:20 - Okay.
01:21 - Now this is one for lower back pain.
01:22 Are you ready?
01:23 - I'm ready.
01:24 - Flip the clock.
01:25 And it is?
01:27 - Devil's claw.
01:28 - I've never heard of it.
01:28 - That sounds ominous, doesn't it?
01:29 - Yeah.
01:30 - Devil's claw, another treatment that's been time tested.
01:34 There's no need for prescription pills.
01:35 This works for you and it works for a ton of folks.
01:37 It's an anti-inflammatory.
01:38 Works similar to the way some medications work.
01:41 - Okay.
01:41 - And the nice thing about it is it works very specifically
01:43 on a joint that's causing a lot of the lower back pain
01:46 people suffer from.
01:47 - Okay.
01:47 - And that is over here.
01:49 Are you ready?
01:51 - I'm ready.
01:52 - This is called the sacroiliac joint.
01:54 - Okay.
01:55 - People have heard of this,
01:56 but they don't know what it really is.
01:56 So these are your hip bones.
01:58 - Yes.
01:59 - Right, the pelvis bones.
02:00 And then there's a joint between the spine in the middle
02:02 and those major bones.
02:04 - Okay.
02:04 - In order to make it the circle
02:05 that supports your whole body.
02:06 And there's ligaments there, it gets strained.
02:08 - Right.
02:09 - And you can see how important they are.
02:10 They're big and thick.
02:11 And when you get pain in there,
02:12 I mean, it's really uncomfortable
02:13 and it travels up northward into your lower back.
02:16 - Right.
02:17 - So the devil's claw helps soothe
02:19 some of the ligamental discomfort.
02:20 You want to take about 100 milligrams a day.
02:22 - Okay.
02:23 Is that like an herbal supplement?
02:24 - It is an herbal supplement, actually.
02:25 - Okay.
02:26 - So a lot of these things, you know,
02:27 people have had back pain for all known history.
02:29 - I'll try it.
02:29 - So they've tried things and a lot of things haven't worked,
02:32 but the ones that have worked,
02:33 they've stood the test of time
02:34 and they're the ones I want to talk about.
02:35 - And that you can get at a health food store, I guess, too.
02:37 - Yeah, all these things I'm talking about today,
02:38 very simple to get.
02:39 They're common uses, we just don't know about them.
02:41 We always go right to the prescription aisle
02:43 or ask our doctor for something.
02:44 - Right, right.
02:45 - And there's more subtle things
02:46 that could probably nudge you in the right direction.
02:47 - We should try that first.
02:48 - Right.
02:49 The next fix, it instantly releases your lower back
02:51 from discomfort.
02:52 Now, this actually comes down, before we reveal this,
02:54 to a major habit many of us have, which is we're sedentary.
02:57 So what kind of work do you do?
02:58 - I'm a nurse.
02:59 - You're a nurse, so you're walking around a lot.
03:01 - Yes.
03:01 - Are you sitting?
03:02 - Well, actually, no, I sit at a desk a lot.
03:03 - You do?
03:04 - Yeah, I work in an office,
03:05 and I'm at a computer for many hours a day.
03:07 So I do, it does bother my back a lot.
03:10 - For all the folks who sit a lot,
03:11 and this is for all of you, I'm talking to you now,
03:13 because the average American sits for about 56 hours a week.
03:17 Think about that, it's a lot of sitting.
03:18 It's a big problem, because when you sit,
03:20 you actually put more tension on your spine
03:22 than when you stand.
03:23 So think of your spine as these hockey pucks,
03:26 the bones, divided by these jelly donuts.
03:29 The donuts are the discs in between them.
03:31 So when you sit, you actually have less blood supply
03:33 to the spine, plus you're not making it flexible,
03:35 stimulating it, so it dries out.
03:37 So you suddenly do something that you shouldn't be doing.
03:40 Would you help me with this?
03:41 - Sure.
03:42 - Grab it.
03:43 You're a nurse, you're a professional,
03:44 and what ends up happening?
03:45 This stuff really inflames you.
03:46 I mean, it's super uncomfortable.
03:47 It's supposed to be a shock absorber, these discs,
03:49 but they don't work that well if you've been,
03:51 unfortunately, beating yourself up,
03:52 'cause you've been sitting all day long.
03:54 So the treatment for this, go ahead, show everybody.
03:57 It's a supine stretch.
04:00 Of all the things I'm gonna talk about,
04:01 this is the one I want you to remember.
04:03 - Okay.
04:03 - 'Cause this one's absolutely free,
04:04 you don't buy it anywhere,
04:05 you just gotta do it in your own home.
04:06 You have to get your spine to reengage.
04:08 You have to bring new blood supply to the spine,
04:10 and give it the flexibility it needs
04:11 to avoid that crunchiness, 'cause we're sitting so much.
04:14 So I'm gonna show you, Eileen,
04:15 but I want everyone at home, if you can,
04:17 to do it right now with this.
04:17 You can do this at work, by the way.
04:19 - Okay. - So lie on your back.
04:20 And all you have to do is relax your shoulders,
04:23 and then take your knees over to the left.
04:26 (groans)
04:26 And try to keep your shoulders down if you can.
04:29 - Okay. - It's such a simple exercise
04:30 that the physical therapist shows to me all the time.
04:32 - Yeah. - And if you really want to,
04:34 you can rest your left hand on your right knee,
04:36 and just sort of push a little more.
04:38 But just relax your lower back.
04:39 Do you feel it?
04:40 - It feels good.
04:41 - Fantastic, right?
04:42 - Yeah. - And after about
04:43 20, 30 seconds of this,
04:45 'cause you only have 60 seconds for the fix,
04:47 - Okay. - come to the other side.
04:48 Finish up your 50 seconds over here,
04:50 and you're good to go.
04:51 And there is no excuse for not doing this at work
04:53 if you can just find a table anywhere.
04:56 Frankly, find a rug, a corner, whatever it takes.
04:58 - Yeah, definitely.
04:59 - But reduce that 56 hours by one minute
05:01 just by doing that.
05:02 - All right.
05:02 - Thanks for joining us. - That sounds good.
05:03 - You can get a guide to 60-second back pain fixes
