The concept of black holes are kind of terrifying. They’re gigantic, not well understood cosmic phenomena and nothing that goes into them ever comes out again. 00:00The concept of black holes are kind of terrifying, they're gigantic not well understood cosmic
00:08phenomena and nothing that goes into them ever comes out again.
00:12However experts say they may have just gotten a bit scarier as they have found signs of
00:16black holes ejecting beams of plasma, ones that can change direction without warning.
00:21Physicists say these beams are emitted when material passes into a black hole and interact
00:25with its powerful magnetic field.
00:26The black holes then fire out a beam of energy just like the Death Star from Star Wars, albeit
00:31less destructive.
00:32The wildest thing is that they keep pointing their beams in different directions.
00:36With the researchers writing about the phenomenon, these Death Star black holes are swiveling
00:40around and pointing at new targets, like the fictional space station in Star Wars.
00:44They say that a third of all of the black holes observed had changed direction dramatically,
00:48but they did so over a period of 10 million years or less.
00:52With the researchers adding, considering that these black holes are likely more than 10
00:55million years old, we consider a large change in direction over a few million years to be
01:00fast.
01:01Now the physicists say this raises more questions, namely why are these black holes changing
01:05direction and how does this impact star formation?
