00:00All rise for Queen Jax, who squashed a woman with her bottom.
00:05All rise for King Gunter, who beat a man without his shoulders on the mat.
00:12But most of all, all rise for this 360 degree revolving drone shot of Logan Paul jumping
00:20off the top rope outside.
00:21I do not miss you, Kevin Dunne.
00:24I'm Oli Davis, and this is my review of King and Queen and Influencer of the Ring.
00:36The pre-show match saw Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill defend their women's tag team titles
00:40against Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell, not Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark, who won a title
00:45shot on Monday's Raw.
00:46When putting on shows in Saudi Arabia, WWE has female performers cover themselves from
00:51head to toe, rather than their usual, more revealing ring attire.
00:55Yet somehow, covering all of Jade Cargill's muscles up only made her look more muscly,
01:01the forefront of change.
01:03Usually when Bianca Belair gets her knee worked over, I check out a bit.
01:07It's done a lot, and always builds to a predictable comeback or hot tag.
01:11But the way we're so entertaining as goofy heels, with Indi mocking Bianca by twirling
01:15her own hair around, I was really into it.
01:18The action picked up significantly after Cargill's hot tag, and the champions retained
01:23with their awesome new tag team finisher, a wheelbarrow DDT into a leg press wheelbarrow
01:28suplex.
01:29That should've been the best finish of the night.
01:31But nothing can escape Nia Jax's hole.
01:36The main card bizarrely opened with the unadvertised celebrity match of Britney Spears vs Liza
01:41Minnelli.
01:42The Crown Prince wants what the Crown Prince wants, I guess.
01:44This was actually Becky Lynch taking on Liv Morgan for the Women's World Championship.
01:48Morgan was in her red standard OOPS I DID IT AGAIN catsuit, but I thought Becky's
01:54tuxedo-like outfit was just her ring entrance gear.
01:59And then she kept wrestling in it.
02:00It was a bit like watching a piano maestro.
02:03Costumes aside, this was a good match that became great with the Judgment Day Intrigue
02:07finish.
02:08Becky suddenly paused in the disarmour because she was distracted by Dominic Mysterio's
02:12hairstyle appearing at ringside.
02:14Was he here for her, or for Liv?
02:16We still don't know, although it's definitely Liv.
02:19Because he slid a chair into the ring behind the referee's back, which was just close
02:23enough to Lynch to make you still think he could be on her side.
02:27Mysterio distracted the referee, maybe to help Becky, maybe to help Liv.
02:31It's Liv.
02:32For Morgan to hit a DDT on the chair, an Oblivion, and get the 1-2-3 to become the new Women's
02:39Champion.
02:40Becky's reign was just transitional.
02:42A smart move to get over Liv as a more credible champion, not just winning it in a battle
02:46royal, but by beating a main eventer like Lynch, albeit dirtily, and Domily.
02:52Even in the post-match, Dom was selling it like it was a mistake, and they never celebrated
02:56together.
02:57Becky was later seen arguing with Dom backstage in confusion, and said that she's going
03:01to have a rematch on Raw.
03:03Something is definitely up here, and I think it leads to Rhea Ripley and Damian Priest,
03:07the last two original members, getting kicked out of Judgment Day.
03:12For a new era of Finn, Dom, JD and weirdly Carlito to be led by Morgan as Judgment Day
03:212000.
03:22The storyline character work continued in the next match, with the Alpha Academy faction
03:27drama providing the emotional backdrop for an excellent triple threat.
03:32Sami Zayn and Chad Gable just wanted to fight each other near the start, so Brunson Reed
03:35would cut in and be an absolute monster, getting the best of a Tower of Doom, and also somehow
03:40reverse DDTing Chad and Urunagin Sami on him at the same time.
03:46We got a triple ankle lock, a triple German suplex, but we didn't get a trio of Alpha
03:51Academy members on the same page.
03:53Chad had already stopped Maxine, who was dressed entirely in gold, from being at ringside,
04:00and Otis couldn't bring himself to clothesline Sami.
04:03And after Chad fired him up with a slap, he ended up accidentally taking out Gable instead.
04:09This let Sami crawl back into the ring, hit Halluva Kick on Reed and retain.
04:14A terrific match that also neatly furthered the Chad and Otis storyline.
04:17There was also a brief QR code flash for Uncle Heldy which takes you to a scary video I wish
04:23I hadn't watched, because it's now late at night and I'm in our studio building
04:26all by myself.
04:29I was already a little bit on edge after watching that snuff film, also known as Nia Jax squashing
04:34Lyra Valkyrie.
04:44Usually when we use the word squash to review wrestling matches, it's about a quick one-sided
04:48win to make a wrestler look very good at the expense of the squashed other.
04:53It's rarely used in the more literal sense, as in, oh my god, Nia Jax just squashed Lyra
04:58Valkyrie.
05:00The Queen of the Ring final was a classic tale of powerful monster heel vs the speedy
05:04young bird lady.
05:05Lyra would dodge or run around Nia's moves, while Jax occasionally would just power through
05:10her.
05:11Both women worked really well.
05:12Initially, most of the crowd heat was directed at booing Nia as the heel, but as the match
05:17progressed, it became just as much about people investing in Valkyria as the underdog babyface.
05:23She wrestled really well.
05:25Until out of nowhere, because I thought we were a few moves away from the finish, Lyra
05:29was kicking at Nia's legs on the second rope, when Jax just dropped herself on her
05:35chest, making her more one-dimensional than 2012 Usos.
05:40It was honestly a fantastic finish, both hilarious and awesome at the same time.
05:45Triple H presented Nia with the crown afterwards, where she said she's going to make us all
05:49angry by becoming the WWE Champion.
05:52Which is Cody's belt.
05:53I assume she means she'll face Bayley at SummerSlam.
05:56The main card of this premium live event was five matches long.
06:00In the history books, however, I want it to be recorded as five matches and Randy Orton's
06:05entrance.
06:06He took forever to get into the ring, which I can only assume was because he didn't
06:10want to take a Gunther chop.
06:11But you can't prolong the inevitable, and Gunther is nothing if not inevitable.
06:18All the matches were really good on this show, but this was the match of the night for me.
06:22At the start, it felt like Randy and Gunther actually hated each other, with Orton in particular
06:26showing a physical realism not usually part of his style.
06:30It felt like Randy had really come to do a Gunther match, which is outside his usual
06:34comfort zone.
06:35And with that, we interestingly got the opposite reaction from Gunther.
06:39Whereas Randy was snarling and confident from the start, Gunther at the beginning looked
06:44a little unsure of himself.
06:46And why wouldn't he?
06:47While his icy reign was incredible, he never really encountered wrestlers at Randy's
06:52main event level.
06:53And when Orton just absorbed the first few chops, it felt like Gunther was on uncertain
06:58ground.
06:59Little details like that hooked me in right from the start, and it was the little details
07:03throughout that gave this match a psychological subtlety you rarely see in WWE.
07:09It started when Gunther dodged an RKO, sending Randy crashing onto his own back, aggravating
07:14the injury that kept him out for 18 months.
07:17Then Randy would do the snap powerslam, again torquing the injured back.
07:21It was Orton's own offence that was slowly chipping away at him.
07:25Other bits of damage started to appear, like welts on his chest from the original chops,
07:29and his knee being worked over too.
07:32So when Randy finally hit an RKO, he was too hurt to make a quick cover on Gunther.
07:37For the finish, Orton hit another RKO, hurting his own back more, but he couldn't do a
07:42full cover with his injured knee.
07:43He couldn't get that leverage, and when Gunther kicked out, it tweaked Randy's knee
07:47further.
07:48Randy quickly hooked in a Crucifix Pin FROM OUTTA NOWHERE, and got the win to become your
07:53new King General, and declare he'll be going for the World Heavyweight Championship at
07:59SummerSlam.
08:00And that's it.
08:02Match of the Night.
08:03Great subtle storytelling, and an excellent way to put Gunther over.
08:08Yes, but just one more thing… yeah, Randy's shoulder was massively off the mat.
08:14The commentators didn't bring it up, and the replay tried to hide that it had happened,
08:18implying that this wasn't intentional.
08:20It's such a shame, after such a meticulously worked match, that the finish was so glaringly
08:25screwed up.
08:30But just one more other thing.
08:31This entire match was about small details.
08:35Perhaps this was intentional.
08:37Gunther is going for the World Heavyweight title at SummerSlam, but I expect Cody vs
08:41Randy Orton for that show's main event.
08:44If Orton gets to say Gunther never really beat him, it protects Orton for the Rhodes
08:48match and, hopefully, means Gunther will have an immediate programme for when he wins the
08:54belt.
08:55Even if it was a botch, if it means we get Gunther vs Randy again for the title at Bash
09:00at Berlin, botch away.
09:03Gunther will likely be facing Drew McIntyre for the title at SummerSlam, because Paul
09:07Levesque then announced McIntyre is cleared, and he'll face Damian Priest at next month's
09:12Bash at the Castle from Glass Cow, Scotland.
09:16And the main event saw Cody Rhodes defend only his WWE title against US Champion Logan
09:21Paul.
09:22Where there will definitely be absolutely zero brass knuckles used.
09:26See?
09:27Michael Cole has them.
09:28There's no way that cheating heel will cheat.
09:31Ok, it's time to do that thing again.
09:37Goddammit Logan's so good, I'm going to stop even calling him a celebrity or an influencer
09:41now.
09:42He's a wrestler.
09:43He's got the athletic ability, the selling, the psychology, the charisma, the timing.
09:48He's perfect, and he's also the perfect main event player for these Saudi shows.
09:52You'll have a fun time watching him, and he doesn't really affect the larger story
09:57you're trying to tell over the year.
09:59Midway through the match, Cody started beating up one of Logan's prime guys for another
10:03to slip Paul an extra set of brass knuckles and punch Cody in the gut.
10:08Michael Cole got so angry about this, it made me think we're getting Logan Paul vs Michael
10:12Cole at SummerSlam.
10:13Logan kicked out of a crossroads, everyone does.
10:16Cody kicked out of a crossroads, even him.
10:18Cody hit a Cody Cutter onto the announcer's table outside.
10:21And then we got it.
10:23The best thing in wrestling all year.
10:25Better than the main event of WrestleMania 40.
10:28Even better than Nia Jax squashing Lyra of Alkeria.
10:31Logan hit his Frog Splash off the top rope through the commentary desk, and a drone filmed
10:35him Bad Boyz style all around.
10:37I thought I couldn't love anything more than that 8K camera they do for the ring announcements.
10:42Back in the ring, the ref took a bump.
10:44Cody got a visible pin, but Logan hit a low blow that dastardly heel, whereupon he revealed
10:49the brass knucks he still had in his pants.
10:52And here was me thinking he was just really happy with that drone shot.
10:55But that guy stopped him.
10:57You know, that guy.
11:00The guy.
11:01The guy from Saudi Arabia.
11:03He did the guest ring announcing.
11:05Yeah.
11:07That guy.
11:09Cody hit three crossroads and retained.
11:10Yes, the local celebrity finish made it feel very House Show-esque, especially when Corey
11:15Graves would've made far more sense standing up to Logan for Michael Cole, but it was still
11:19a really enjoyable match.
11:21King and Queen of the Ring is 80%.
11:25Go celebrate Cody's win by watching my video essay on the crazy story of Cody Rhodes.
