00:00500 meters of pure joy for Andrea Vendrami.
00:06It's been three years since Andrea Vendrami has ridden to victory in any bike race.
00:12The Giro d'Italia really, in 2021, his biggest achievement by far.
00:18But that stage pales into insignificance relatively compared to what he's just delivered.
00:24Deep into this Giro d'Italia in the Dolomites here against a stacked field.
00:30Andrea Vendrami has been off the front for longer than any of the other bike riders in this breakaway.
00:36Wonderful victory, another stage win for Italy.
00:40And Vendrami has just done the ride of his life.
00:43Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale score a second win.
00:47And that was the best ride this man has ever, ever produced.
00:54And what a stage to do it on.
00:55Vendrami, take a bow.
01:00And maybe Ballerini, it's survivable for Ballerini.
01:13And if you take him to the line, then he would be a very dangerous rider.
01:17No, I agree.
01:19Well, there we go.
01:23Yeah, yeah.
01:25Edoardo Affini going again.
01:28From Wismar Lisebike.
01:30Simon Clarke on the right-hand side kicks things off as Ed turns and then Ballerini.
01:36And then here we go.
01:37Some of the best climbers is Sheffield, Velasco, Piccolo.
01:42Vendrami on his day.
01:43Yeah.
01:44Dangerous on a course like this.
01:46He's won stages in the past that are hillier than this.
01:49Yeah.
01:50In this very race.
01:51So, yeah, he is a rider that's...
01:53Valter is a good climber.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Here at the Giro d'Italia once again, Simon Clarke trying to go with the Frenchman.
01:59Alaphilippe is at it again.
02:01Steep little slope here that Alaphilippe is using to his advantage.
02:06I mean, that was brilliant stuff from Alaphilippe.
02:08He's really got that sort of punch back.
02:10We're so familiar with Jonathan Navias there.
02:12Quintana Hermans as well.
02:13The riders from the teams that have missed it.
02:16Punching up this little...
02:17Jonathan Navias really tilts into that corner.
02:20And then...
02:21Crikey.
02:22Wow, Alaphilippe nearly takes out Sanchez.
02:24Wow.
02:26Sketchy.
02:26Yeah, Sanchez.
02:27Characteristic pilot error from Navias.
02:29He was on the front.
02:31Taking that a bit hot.
02:32Just lays it down.
02:34Yeah.
02:36He's got away with it there, I think.
02:38Possibly his bike's still working.
02:40And straight back on.
02:41Straight back on.
02:41Chains off.
02:43Hugging his friends and family today at these sorts of speeds.
02:47Interestingly, he's on the wheel of Max Valscheid there, isn't he?
02:50I mean, Demarcus from their lineup is one of the riders they'd want in the move.
02:54Yeah.
02:54Not just because he lives nearby.
02:55Because the terrain suits him.
02:57So close now.
02:58And 13 seconds.
02:59So they are getting organized.
03:01And clearly the road captains or the DSs of both of those Belgian teams.
03:05They said, we need to bring this back.
03:07Well, it's taken a while.
03:08Got a little climb coming up in probably about four kilometers.
03:11They drop down.
03:13And there's a little kick up.
03:14As soon as the climb they...
03:22Yeah, a little climb coming up soon.
03:24And that might be the point where I think that chasing group is going to get on.
03:27Because they are making progress.
03:29They need to, just from a fueling perspective and like the terrain that's to come.
03:35But it's a big enough group where they can actually roll through.
03:38And have an opportunity to rest.
03:39But once the likes of Narvaez, Alaphilippe sees that there's two from Visma, Lisebaek.
03:44Three from EF.
03:46They can actually just back off a little bit.
03:50And it is the responsibility of the teams with numbers here to commit a little bit more.
03:54Understanding exactly what this move is all about.
03:57Here he is.
03:57So he'll be on the podium at the end of the day.
03:59And that's his initial reward for making it into this 19 rider breakaway group.
04:04The sole representative of the Italian pro team.
04:07VF group Bardiani.
04:09It's Manuele Torozzi who takes the Intergiro at Pallaro.
04:13So Doron tops out at just over a thousand meters.
04:18As Alaphilippe leans on it again as the road steepens once more.
04:22Matt, we thought Alaphilippe would try and force a selection here.
04:24We were discussing it.
04:25But the only surprise is that he did it straight away.
04:28As soon as they hit the climb pretty much.
04:30Didn't hesitate.
04:31Gaccia has a little bit of an issue.
04:33Don't know if he's dropping back for a mechanical.
04:35He's certainly slowing down.
04:37No real panic.
04:39It's actually like a rear flat tire there.
04:42He might not, you know, he might actually be able to.
04:44It might be that pinned.
04:45That's true.
04:45I mean, it looks...
04:47Alaphilippe is hurting this group.
04:49He is.
04:50It's hurting everybody as the road just kicks up a little bit now.
04:53Is he going to go through now?
04:54Yeah.
04:54Yes, he is.
04:54Looking for space.
04:56Looking for space.
04:57Does Alaphilippe...
04:58Is he...
04:59He's going to try and do it.
05:00Oh, Alaphilippe's just out of principle taking the points.
05:0218 points to Alaphilippe.
05:04Eight points to Georg Steinhauser.
05:06He looked across.
05:08Maximum.
05:09And then a further 18 over the Cima Sepada.
05:11Yeah.
05:12I mean, just the fact at the front of the race,
05:14even if he doesn't go through, he's going to score.
05:16And he should comfortably be ensconced in second place
05:20with enough points to take that jersey tomorrow.
05:22But that's another story, I think.
05:23He's going to put that to the back of his mind.
05:25Schooning Alaphilippe.
05:26Sensing that they were coming.
05:28He's at it again.
05:29Georg Steinhauser forced to react.
05:31Doesn't want to go solo here, does he?
05:33Wants to prize a group.
05:34Looks round.
05:35Sees that the stronger of the riders are coming across now.
05:38Georg Steinhauser and Jonathan Avaez.
05:40He's stamping his authority all over this breakaway, Alaphilippe.
05:44Steinhauser doesn't dare move from that position, I don't think.
05:47I don't think.
05:48Yeah.
05:50Maybe a little bit of a mark of respect as well.
05:53You never know when you might need your friends.
05:57Gets it.
05:58Gets it.
05:58Gets it.
05:59He's allowed to this time.
06:00So Steinhauser.
06:01Yeah, good rider.
06:02I mean, he's been with the team a long time, hasn't he?
06:04Yeah.
06:05Signed by...
06:07Signed from the ranks of Androni Giocattoli, Andrea Vendrami,
06:11to AG2A La Mondiale, as they were known, in 2020.
06:13So contracted through to next year as well.
06:16It will be six years with this team.
06:18A steeper section already as we pick up some drone footage of...
06:22Is this Vendrami at the front of the race?
06:24Yep.
06:26So he's not quite at the steepest sections yet.
06:321.07 his lead.
06:34Yeah, but where they are now isn't actually very far from our finishing point.
06:37It's just to the back of us, but they put a little loop in.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Go over the back of this climber, then drop back into the finish.
06:43So they're only about two, three hundred meters from where we are now.
06:48Well, he's been masterful in measuring his efforts to this point.
06:52He has.
06:52There they are.
06:53Yeah, Alaphilippe, Navas and Plap.
06:56Two former teammates when they were both at Ineos.
07:00I don't think Plap has got a lot left.
07:02I don't think he can be...
07:03Well, not that anybody can be criticized.
07:05It's just the best...
07:08Not necessarily the total strongest, but the smartest man up the road
07:14is indeed Andrea Vendrami as Narvaez goes again.
07:16They're just taking chunks out of each other here, aren't they?
07:20It's making me feel a bit nauseous.
07:23It's quite a roller coaster circuit here, isn't it?
07:32So these three riders at the moment are battling for fourth, fifth and sixth place on this stage.
07:40Ahead of them, Peleo Sanchez,
07:42who is pretty close to getting the cross to Georg Steinhauser last time we saw.
07:45But those two nowhere near the front of the race, where Andrea Vendrami is still.
07:49Right at this relentless rhythm, back on the big ring, top of the block.
07:52We've got multiple Slovenian flags here.
07:55They'll be giving Tadej Pogacar and the rest to chill a little bit later on.
07:58But right now he's going to ride through a wall of noise.
08:01Some ride this is.
08:03Hung on all day in the wet and cold for a glimpse of the Malle Rosa.
08:07Oh, down! That's going on Thomas.
08:09Thomas down.
08:10Thomas down.
08:10He's retrieving his bike.
08:13Doesn't look too badly hurt.
08:14If that bike is working, he should be all right to get back on.
08:17Well, Ben O'Connor, he's dropped the chain.
08:19He's dropped the chain.
08:20Now, where's the team car?
08:21500 meters of pure joy for Andrea Vendrami.
08:24It's been three years since Andrea Vendrami has ridden to victory in any bike race.
08:31The Giro d'Italia, really in 2021, his biggest achievement by far.
08:37But that stage pales into insignificance relatively compared to what he's just delivered.
08:43Deep into this Giro d'Italia in the Dolomites here against a stacked field.
08:48Andrea Vendrami has been off the front for longer than any of the other bike riders in this breakaway.
08:55Wonderful victory.
08:56Another stage win for Italy.
08:58And Vendrami has just done the ride of his life.
09:02Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale score a second win.
09:05And that was the best ride this man has ever, ever produced.
09:12And what a stage to do it on.
09:14Vendrami, take a bow.
