Is it common for players to receive Jaden Rashada treatment in the form of NIL deals get pulled away from broken promises? Brian Smith breaks it down with Alex Donno.
Transcript
00:00 I would love to get Brian Smith's perspective on the Jaden Rashad lawsuit.
00:03 Rashad is he's suing Billy Napier, head coach of the Florida Gators, for fraud.
00:08 Right. And there's a couple of other defendants there, including Hugh Halfcock,
00:12 who's a big time Gator booster.
00:15 And now, listen, I obviously we all know with NIL big time money gets gets offered.
00:22 And these NIL deals, a lot of people think, oh, it's getting out of control.
00:26 But OK, here's the part that this is not about offering money.
00:29 The problem here is the allegation that you're offering money,
00:33 apparently with no intention to actually pay it.
00:35 And then and then the the alleged Billy Napier involvement was, you know,
00:39 when when Rashad rightfully got cold feet right before National Signing Day,
00:43 like, hey, are they actually going to pay me anything?
00:45 I don't want to sign my national letter of intent.
00:47 That's when allegedly Billy Napier called him and said, don't worry,
00:51 you're going to get your money signed with us.
00:53 And then Rashad, his accusation is they were just telling me whatever,
00:56 whatever they needed to tell me to get me to commit with no intention
01:00 of actually fulfilling this NIL deal.
01:02 So that's where the fraud comes in.
01:03 And that to me, Brian, I I do not have an issue with players getting paid.
01:08 I think they deserve it.
01:09 I'm glad NIL is here.
01:10 I'm glad revenue sharing is coming.
01:12 I think players deserve this.
01:13 But obviously, when you're allegedly committing fraud, that is a problem.
01:17 So I would ask you, you don't have to name any names, but you cover
01:21 hundreds of high school recruits around the country.
01:25 Is it a common or semi common thing to get to get offers?
01:30 And then those offers end up getting getting yanked and fraud is committed.
01:34 Like, is that something that happens far beyond Jaden Rashad?
01:38 Most of this stuff is done behind closed doors, because until recently,
01:43 let's be honest, the NIL stuff has been used as an inducement by everybody.
01:48 That's and it's illegal, et cetera.
01:50 There's no if, ands or buts.
01:52 So when kids would get mad if they didn't get money,
01:54 they'd be turning themselves in.
01:56 So it was an awkward situation.
01:58 Yeah. Now it's it's starting to be different.
02:01 But like I know of several cases, for what I'm told, where a guy got hurt
02:06 and wasn't playing at a school, they weren't hurt.
02:10 They were irritated over the whole NIL situation at that school.
02:13 It's happened a bunch.
02:16 But again, this is before like NCA is kind of just backed off there.
02:19 There is. Noncommittal on what they're going to do with NIL
02:23 as anything I've ever seen. It's bizarre.
02:25 But I think that's why Rashad is bringing this up.
02:27 And he waited to when he did.
02:29 So that's the part of it.
02:31 Now, with that, this also opens up other things.
02:35 If he gets any money, any money for whatever settlement or whatever,
02:39 it's going to open doors on how the schools act.
02:41 There's going to be a lot tighter contracts.
02:44 And if you leave after that, like you go to a school, Miami or whatever,
02:46 and you transfer, there's going to be buyouts.
02:49 It's going to be very NFL like it's not going to just be helping the player.
02:53 This is going to help schools probably as much, if not more.
02:55 But the whole Napier thing is the part in particular that's unique.
02:59 You're going to see coaches just completely take themselves out.
03:03 If this if he gets sued and loses, take themselves out of the recruitment.
03:07 Like at the like, they're not going to deal with it.
03:09 It's a problem. Yeah.
03:11 So I don't know.
03:12 That's a bad precedent, even if he did that, because then coaches like,
03:15 how do you how do you do this?
03:18 It's it's really awkward.
