00:42 But in The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon is known for his love of graphic tees.

00:48 In the season five finale of Young Sheldon,
00:51 Sheldon faces an adolescent existential crisis.
00:54 Missy comforts him, saying that all parts of growing up are worth embracing.

01:38 He sticks around, gets a job, and meets the friends who would become his close-knit group.
01:42 However, his history with the university goes way back.
01:45 Sure, it seemed like love at first sight when Sheldon first visited in season three.
01:50 "Imagine all the stimulating conversations that must go on at these tables."

01:57 "I can see myself going here one day."
01:58 "I think you'd fit right in."
02:02 Later that season, he'd find out that Caltech was pretty keen to have him, too.

02:52 Most of us might think it's just his matter-of-fact way of talking.

03:01 Missy's natural curiosity about the birds and the bees causes quite a stir.
03:05 "That's silly. All you did was ask questions."
03:07 "And it's ruining my life. I'm never talking about sex again."
03:11 "Well, alright."
03:14 Sheldon and Dr. Sturgess try to get to the bottom of what it is about the subject
03:18 that makes people so squirmish.
03:20 Unfortunately, their experiment costs Dr. Sturgess his job.
03:24 "And now we know, conversations like that can cost you your job."
03:28 "You'll learn something new every day."
03:29 So Sheldon decides the best solution is to find a word so mechanical and devoid of emotion
03:34 that practically no one will get flustered at the sound of it.
03:37 "Then I found the perfect word. A word so bland and clinical
03:42 that it would be impossible to take offense to it."
03:44 "Quitis. That'll work."
03:47 Number 17.
03:48 Where did Sheldon's strong dislike of hospitals begin?
03:51 Few people like hospitals. However, Sheldon seems to really hate them,
03:56 to the point where you might even call it a phobia.
03:58 "Sheldon, let's go."
03:59 "To a hospital? Full of sick people? Oh, I don't think so."
04:06 So where did that all begin? Well, if you cast your mind all the way back to Season 1, Episode 3,
04:11 you may recall that George Sr. suffers a minor heart attack.
04:14 Anxious about their father, the Cooper kids sneak out to the hospital.
04:18 "I'm going to see Dad. You guys wanna come?"
04:20 "How? Meemaw said we have to stay here."
04:23 "You wanna go or not?"
04:25 While looking for a place to wash his hands,
04:27 Sheldon happens to catch sight of the doctors treating his father.
04:30 Poor kid, no one wants to think of their parent in such a vulnerable position,
04:34 let alone have to see it. No wonder he becomes so averse to hospitals.
04:38 "My thinking was, if he was right about the existence of God,
04:42 then he could pass along my request for my dad to get better.
04:45 If he was wrong, well, in this moment, I needed him to be right."
04:52 Number 16. Why was Sheldon so reluctant to learn how to drive?
04:57 While we're on that episode, let's talk about how the Cooper kids got to the hospital.
05:01 Georgie, a freshman in high school at the time,
05:04 swipes their Meemaw's keys and gets behind the wheel.
05:06 "Why don't we ask somebody for directions?"
05:08 "Because we're children in a car, genius."
05:11 [Crash]
05:12 "Dang it."
05:13 "Are you aiming for them?"
05:15 "Everybody just shut up, I got this."
05:17 Their journey hits plenty of bumps, or should we say trash cans along the way.
05:22 Narrator Sheldon chimes in, citing this very event as the reason
05:26 he was never keen on learning to drive.
05:28 "I've often been asked why I never learned to drive a car.
05:31 This night is your answer."
05:35 Luckily, they make it to the hospital in one piece.
05:38 Still, we imagine Connie's accident a few seasons later didn't help either.
05:42 Sheldon eventually learns to drive, but keeps it on the down low because,
05:46 well, it's more fun to be chauffeured around, right?
05:49 "So when I got up at 4am to drive you across the desert to an antique train museum,
05:54 I didn't have to?"
05:54 "No, you didn't. Keep in mind, I felt extremely important."
06:00 Number 15. What happened to Sheldon's childhood home?
06:03 The Big Bang Theory fans may have noticed that the home Sheldon visits in East Texas
06:08 isn't the same one we see in Young Sheldon.
06:10 "If you recall when you were little, we sat right here at this very spot,
06:14 and we talked about some of the problems you had getting along with the neighbor kids."
06:18 In the prequel series finale, it's revealed that, as many of us suspected,
06:22 adult Sheldon had been writing his memoir,
06:24 and we've been watching the chapters about his childhood.
06:26 In a touching transition, adult Sheldon walks through the Coopers' home,
06:30 reflecting on everything that he now holds close to his heart.
06:33 He explains that his mom moved out sometime after his father passed away,
06:37 and he'd moved to Pasadena.
06:39 "Eventually, my mom sold the house.
06:41 My dad's chair was gone.
06:48 My spot was gone."
06:54 Luckily, before he left, he captured every part of the home
06:58 to safely store away in his eidetic memory.

07:09 "Taking it all in one last time, so I remember it when I'm older."

07:15 What about Sheldon's idol, Professor Proton?
07:18 "I-I power a clock with a-with a potato."
07:21 "Shut up! You can do that?"
07:24 Who could possibly forget Bob Newhart's multiple appearances
07:27 as Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory?
07:29 When the guys hire him to come to the apartment,
07:31 we're given a glimpse at Sheldon's childhood hero.
07:34 "What do you think will happen?"
07:36 "I think I know."
07:37 "It's gonna get sucked in."
07:38 He digs out an old autographed photo of the professor,
07:41 and tells the story of how he watched Proton every day after school.
07:45 Sure enough, during the pilot episode of Young Sheldon,
07:48 we find multiple references to Sheldon's adoration for Newhart's character.
07:52 We see Sheldon panic when he can't find his bow tie to wear to school,
07:55 citing Professor Proton always wearing one.
07:58 "My tie is gone! My tie is gone!"
08:00 "Kelly, you don't really need a tie."
08:01 "I have to find my tie! I have to find my tie!"
08:04 "Be right back."
08:06 "Professor Proton wears a bow tie!"
08:09 And finally, we see Sheldon watching him on TV every day when he gets home,
08:13 just as he had described to him as an adult.
08:15 "Can a clock be powered by an ordinary potato?
08:19 I hope so, boys and girls, but this is going to be a really boring episode."
08:25 Number 13. What are the origins of the agreement?
08:28 "According to the roommate agreement, paragraph 9, subsection b,
08:32 the right to bathroom privacy is suspended in the event of force majeure."
08:35 Leonard and Sheldon had their share of fights over the roommate agreement,
08:39 a contract signed by both of them dictating the terms of their living arrangement.
08:43 "Dr. Leonard Hofstadter, you are officially charged
08:46 with two violations of the roommate agreement."
08:48 From what they watched, to the thermostat settings,
08:51 the two consistently found themselves at odds.
08:54 For Sheldon, however, the structure of these agreements
08:57 somehow seemed to help him structure his world.

09:02 We would come to learn in young Sheldon that his obsession with contracts

09:27 Where did Sheldon's fascination with comic books come from?
09:30 Comic book references were a staple in The Big Bang Theory,
09:33 reflecting the guy's avid collector status.

09:40 "Provided he has already read Infinite Crisis and 52,

09:46 It would be easy to assume their adoration came from the typical

09:51 Yet for Sheldon, his origin started far differently.
09:54 In a very early season one episode of Young Sheldon,
09:57 he spots his friend Tam reading one and scoffs at them as childish.

10:03 "Have you ever read one?"
10:05 "I outgrew picture books when I was three."
10:08 "Just eat your lunch."
10:09 Yet when he gets dragged to a psychiatrist's office,
10:12 an X-Men comic book piques his interest.
10:14 Soon enough, he too ends up at a comic book store,

10:23 Similarly, his foray into video games began skeptically,

10:39 Why does Mary talk so badly about George?
10:42 When Mary visits Sheldon during the Parent series,
10:44 the few tidbits she drops about her late husband
10:46 are never particularly complimentary.
10:49 "His father, God rest his soul, used to always say to me,
10:51 'Mary, you have to take your time with Sheldon.'"
10:53 "Sounds like a wise man."

10:58 He once tried to fight a bobcat for some licorice."
11:00 Sure, they had their share of ups and downs,
11:03 but we never doubted their love for each other.
11:05 So why does Mary seem to have such a sour view of him?

11:11 their relationship is arguably at its strongest.
11:14 When George passes away, Mary's completely and understandably crushed.
11:18 It seems like it's easier for her to channel her grief into anger.

11:32 So next time we watch The Big Bang Theory and hear Mary criticize George,

11:42 and I was praying to the Lord to give me a son smarter than his dumbass daddy."

11:48 Why does Sheldon hate geology?
11:50 Sheldon makes no secret of his disdain for practically every field but his own.
11:54 "Physics answers the question, what is the nature of the universe?
11:58 Geology answers the question, what did I just trip over?"
12:01 Sure, it could just be his snobbiness,
12:03 but young Sheldon tends to unearth the exact moments these opinions are formed.
12:08 Take season one, for instance.
12:09 Sheldon meets Libby, who opens his eyes to the world of geology.
12:13 Whether it's a crush or he's just happy to meet someone intellectually stimulating,
12:17 Sheldon decides to "dig" geology.
12:20 "People didn't understand continental drift
12:21 because they didn't understand sea floor spreading."
12:23 "What?"
12:26 "I'm both threatened and delighted by your brain."
12:29 However, when he overhears that Libby sees him as a little kid,
12:32 he's heartbroken and essentially ends their friendship.
12:35 We're not comparing Sheldon to a supervillain,
12:37 but this seems to be an origin story as good as any.

12:48 "No, it's more like a hobby. Rock collecting. Childish, really."
12:52 Number 9. When did Georgie become interested in tires?
12:56 "Could just be the thermostat not opening right."

13:01 "I took auto repair last year."
13:03 "And you actually paid attention?"
13:05 "I'm as surprised as you are."
13:06 When Sheldon and Amy finally decide to get married,
13:09 audiences got to meet Sheldon's older brother, Georgie.
13:12 He'd been mentioned occasionally throughout the show,
13:14 but we had never seen his face.
13:16 We come to learn that Georgie owns a very successful tire business,
13:19 and that he and Sheldon rarely speak.
13:21 "What the hell are you doing here?"
13:24 "Hello, Georgie."
13:25 "It's just George now."
13:27 "Fine. George. No, I don't like it. Georgie."
13:30 The origins of Georgie's affinity for tires can be traced back
13:33 to the ending of a season 2 episode of the prequel series.
13:36 Inspired by the pottery scene from Ghost,
13:39 we see Georgie communing with a tire to try and find where the leak is.
13:43 "Talk to me. Tell me where it hurts. Gotcha."
13:52 Jump forward several scenes and wouldn't you know it,
13:55 Georgie's new father-in-law just happens to own a tire store.
13:58 "Really? Selling tires? You are not gonna regret this.
14:02 I'll work my butt off for you. Nights, weekends, holidays, you name it, I'm there."
14:06 "Pretty impressive kid, huh?"
14:09 Number 8. Why did Mary get Sheldon tested?
14:12 In one of the Big Bang Theory's longest running gags,
14:14 whenever someone would point out Sheldon's... let's call him quirks,
14:18 he'd typically respond,
14:19 "I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested."
14:22 Indeed, young Sheldon confirms this in a season 3 episode.
14:26 After Dr. Sturgis has a breakdown and is hospitalized,
14:29 Mary worries that Sheldon, who's as gifted as his mentor,
14:32 might experience similar struggles.
14:34 She takes it upon herself to try and determine Sheldon's mental state,
14:38 but the pair ultimately wind up in a psychologist's office.
14:41 There, Mary finds reassurance, while Sheldon learns the true cause
14:44 of his mother's concerns.
14:46 "But he's getting the help he needs, and I'm sure he's gonna be fine."
14:49 "And you think since he and I are both gifted, I'm going to end up like him."
14:56 The scene ends with a tender hug.
14:57 But who knows what might have happened had Mary pursued
15:00 the follow-up offer in Houston.
15:02 "Actually, I had him tested as a child. The doctor says he's fine."

15:11 Number 7. Why does Sheldon offer hot beverages?
15:15 "What's going on?"
15:16 "Well, Howard's gonna sleep here tonight. He had a fight with his mother."
15:18 "Did you offer him a hot beverage?"
15:20 Despite his sometimes robotic behavior,
15:22 Sheldon Cooper is not beyond showing compassion for those around him.
15:26 "Lenard, social protocol states when a friend is upset,
15:28 you offer them a hot beverage, such as tea."
15:30 "Tea does sound nice."
15:32 When his rival Paige is saddened by her parents' divorce,
15:35 Sheldon decides to make her a hot beverage to provide some kind of comfort.
15:39 As George learns of what his son is doing, he smiles and says,
15:42 "I'm proud of you."
15:43 Older Sheldon, as the narrator, tells the viewer he was surprised
15:46 to hear his dad's words, but enjoyed them nonetheless.
15:50 Fast forward to the Big Bang Theory, and Sheldon's obsession with
15:53 consoling with hot beverages would be the norm,
15:55 encouraged on occasion by his mother.
15:57 Could it be his own way of keeping his dad proud?

16:11 Number 6. What is Soft Kitty's backstory?
16:14 As smart as he is, both young and older Sheldon both seem to have an affinity
16:18 for a childhood lullaby called Soft Kitty.
16:20 "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.
16:29 Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr, purr, purr."
16:35 Sung to him when he's sick, the tune surfaces time and time again
16:39 over the course of the original show's 12-year run.

16:48 In another Young Sheldon Season 1 reveal, we see his mom taking care of him,
16:52 and her pulling out this classic tune to help cure Sheldon of his ailments.

17:24 The Big Bang Theory would have us believe that George Sr. was a lazy oaf

17:34 before I was allowed to do my homework."
17:36 That couldn't be further from the man we meet on Young Sheldon.
17:39 George is a dedicated family man who goes to great lengths
17:42 to make his loved ones happy, even at a personal cost.
17:46 "I never understood the sacrifices my father made for his family's happiness,
17:50 which made me somewhat less compassionate than I should have been."
17:53 "Yay, we're not moving! We're staying in Texas!"
17:57 Sure, maybe he didn't always get Sheldon,
17:59 but that didn't mean he didn't care about what mattered to him.

18:12 Adult Sheldon admits he didn't always appreciate his father

18:53 However, when he enrolls in an engineering class,
18:56 he meets his match in the tough-as-nails Professor Boucher.

19:34 Still, we've never taken it out on a friend who just happens to work in the same field.

19:43 "So all the teasing and all the abuse had nothing to do with me?"
19:47 "I'll admit at first I had a chip on my shoulder because of that class.
19:50 But then it was mostly you."

19:54 Did Sheldon have kids?
19:55 During the earlier seasons of The Big Bang Theory,
19:58 fans would never have predicted Sheldon would end up with a girlfriend,
20:01 let alone his own family.
20:02 "Well, I wasn't going to give them any of the good names.
20:05 I'm saving those for us."
20:06 "Really? You thought about our kids?"
20:09 "Of course. I think you and I will have exceptional children."
20:13 Yet the writers found a brilliant way to introduce the character of Amy,

21:09 Where did Bazinga come from?

21:26 Although it has been around for a while,
21:29 it cemented itself into pop culture by becoming Sheldon's catchphrase

21:38 that it would be easy to think he created it himself.
