Huskies safeties coach shares his thoughts on traits defensive backs have to posses to play in the UW defensive scheme.

00:00 >> Alignment, assignment, execution, situational awareness,
00:04 and a great effort to get to the football every single play.
00:09 >> How hard is this to learn from scratch guys just coming in from high school?
00:12 You got a lot of young guys.
00:13 How hard is it to just understand your play?
00:17 >> As long as you understand the concept and you don't just learn one position,
00:22 you try and understand the concept as a whole.
00:25 It kind of paints the picture a little bit better for you.
00:28 So understanding different coverages, understanding how run fits happen based
00:32 off what the fronts are, where the rotation's at, and that's what these guys are doing.
00:36 And they're doing a great job.
00:37 They're understanding the whole concept that we're teaching them, and
00:41 they're continuing to progress and they're getting better.
00:43 >> Are they picking up the scheme faster than you thought they might or?
00:45 >> They're doing a great job.
00:47 I had no reservations on how fast they'd learned it, and
00:50 I had no, I guess, overshooting by how fast they would learn it either.
00:56 They've done a great job so far learning it in the progression that we've
00:59 teached it, and I'm extremely proud of these guys so far.
01:03 >> So far as you're a former NFL safety, do they express to you that they like that,
01:08 that you've been there and you can share some of that with them?
01:12 >> They've talked about it a little bit.
01:14 Said those days are long behind me.
01:16 But yeah, I mean, I just try and give them little tidbits of how I would play
01:21 the position, how I would analyze a formation, how I would analyze a situation,
01:26 how the coverage dictates the technique that we're gonna play on the play.
01:32 And they've been learning, they've been progressing really well, and
01:36 I'm just happy to be working with these guys.
