00:04 Let's rejoicify something wicked has come our way once more.
00:08 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're breaking down the newly released trailer and featurette for the upcoming Wicked film adaptation.
00:15 If this is your first trip to Oz, there may be spoilers ahead.
00:19 "You."
00:20 "You're the one the Wizard has been waiting for."
00:27 Number 6. Another trip to Oz.
00:30 While the first look trailer released on Super Bowl Sunday took us on our inaugural trip down this yellow brick road,
00:36 not everyone was skipping. Some felt that the heavy use of CGI diminished the magic.
00:41 If you're in that camp, don't worry, you're not alone.
00:44 "Don't be afraid."
00:46 "I'm not afraid."
00:48 John M. Chu shared that his vision never relied on full CGI anyway, and actually those stunning sets were physically constructed.
00:55 So with that in mind, let's take a closer look at them.
00:58 "That was you that made all that happen."
01:00 "How did you do it?"
01:02 Firstly, there's this stunning scene of Glenda addressing the Munchkinlanders in a Munchkinland reminiscent of the one from the classic 1939 The Wizard of Oz.
01:10 "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."
01:15 Leaked footage suggests this might be from the opening number, "No One Mourns the Wicked."
01:20 We're also taken on a campus tour of Shiz University, from classrooms to dorms and the wider grounds.
01:26 What's a trip to Oz without a pit stop in the Emerald City, which of course features prominently throughout the trailer?
01:32 "The wonderful Wizard of Oz summons you to the Emerald City."
01:36 "Come with me."
01:38 "What?"
01:39 "To meet the wizard."
01:40 "Why couldn't it possibly? This is your moment. I'm coming."
01:42 We see Glenda and Elphaba explore the city and even get a glimpse into the wizard's lair.
01:46 There's definitely a lot of hype for the trip down to the Ozdust Ballroom, from Glenda and her friends getting ready for their night on the town,
01:54 to the pivotal moment that marks the beginning of her and Elphaba's friendship.
01:57 "She doesn't give a twink when anyone thinks."
01:59 "Something is not the same."
02:02 "Of course she does. She just pretends not to."
02:05 There's also one particularly riveting moment in the featurette that will make any Wicked fan who spots it squeal in excitement,
02:12 the wizard presiding over the vast expanse of Oz.
02:15 We don't know about you, but there's a sense of déjà vu about this image, or at least something close to it, sans wizard.
02:21 Anyone else suddenly got chills?
02:23 Number 5. The Story.
02:25 We know the film will be split into two parts, but what remains uncertain is the content of each half.
02:31 In the stage production, defying gravity serves as the perfect Act 1 finale,
02:35 leaving audiences eagerly waiting for the curtain to rise on Act 2.
02:39 "Let it all go." "Mayday!"
02:42 "Let it all go." "Mayday!"
02:46 "Mayday!" "Mayday!"
02:48 "Mayday!" "Mayday!"
02:50 "Mayday!" "Mayday!"
02:52 "Mayday!" "Mayday!"
02:54 "Mayday!" "Mayday!"
02:56 According to the composer Stephen Schwartz, this climactic number will likely mark the end of Part 1 of the movie as well.
03:02 He explained that the number was designed, quote, "to bring a curtain down."
03:06 And really, anything that followed straight after would only get lost in its shadow.
03:10 [Screaming]
03:17 So while we can speculate on how Part 1 will conclude, what else can we anticipate?
03:22 We've already touched on the opening number, but there's more to unpack from the trailer.
03:26 "Oh, I saved you some space, by the way."
03:28 "Do you really think this is fair?" "I do not. I was promised a private sweep."
03:32 "But thanks for asking."
03:34 It gives us a peek into Alfie and Galinda's dynamic as reluctant roommates,
03:38 their transition to friendship, and their escapades in the Emerald City,
03:42 seemingly up until they part ways following Defying Gravity.
03:45 We can't say for sure, but this scene from the featurette looks like the moment
03:49 the Wizard and Madame Morrible trick Elphaba into casting a spell for them.
03:52 It would lead to Defying Gravity, so that's definitely a possibility.
03:56 "Oh, I feel pain in my feet, until the wind and sky."
04:02 We also see a shot of Elphaba looking all pensive on a bench,
04:05 which could hint at the Elphaba-Fiero-Galinda love triangle.
04:09 Number 4. Costume sneak peeks.
04:12 Anyone who attended MovieCon in April 2024 was lucky enough to get an in-person preview
04:17 of some of the movie's costumes courtesy of designer Paul Tazwell.
04:20 Known for his Oscar-nominated work in the 2021 West Side Story remake,
04:24 he's no stranger to costume design for stage shows, either.
04:28 Let's just say that, once again, he truly understood the assignment.
04:32 While Susan Hilfredy's stage costumes are iconic,
04:35 Tazwell's cinematic magic brought the designs a new level of intricacy.
04:39 Just take a look at Elphaba's dress and matching pointed hat.
04:42 Sharp doesn't even begin to describe it.
04:45 If that's the vogue, who's to say that black shouldn't be this year's pink?
04:48 "You should join us tonight. And don't tell me you have nothing to wear.
04:52 Because you could wear this."
04:54 Of course, it's not just Elphaba who got the Tazwell treatment.
04:57 Madame Morrible looks regal as ever.
04:59 And doesn't Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard look dapper in his suit, too?
05:03 Like Hilfredy before him, Tazwell really grasped how fashion can reflect the values of a society,
05:08 and the Emerald City dwellers are a testament to that.
05:11 Who knew there were that many shades of green?
05:13 "Ah! You're green."
05:16 "I am."
05:19 Let's also take a moment to appreciate the subtle yet significant details,
05:23 like Elphaba's glasses frame.
05:25 It's a small touch, but it speaks volumes about her character and her desire to belong.
05:30 Still, if we could raid any character's closet, we'd make a beeline for Glinda's.
05:34 While her iconic blue ball gown from the stage show serves as inspiration,
05:38 Tazwell decided to focus on a more prominent pink palette.
05:41 After all, pink goes good with green.
05:44 "Well, one of the ideas for Elphaba is that she's from the Earth.
05:48 But when we get to Glinda, that she's from the sky,
05:51 in which is why it should feel like it's light and effortless."
05:54 Every outfit she wears is a fashion statement in itself.
05:57 And did you see her shoe collection?
06:00 Yet that opening scene dress is truly a showstopper.
06:03 The level of detail in the corset bodice alone is breathtaking,
06:07 not to mention the intricate twists and pleats of the skirt.
06:10 It's clear that this has also been a passion project for Tazwell,
06:13 who's brilliantly paid homage to the original and The Wizard of Oz,
06:17 while infusing it with his own creative vision.
06:20 "I beg your pardon, but I've never heard of a beautiful witch before."
06:25 If he doesn't get another Oscar nod for this, we'll defy gravity.
06:29 Number 3. Fellow Ozians
06:31 "Welcome, new students, to Shiz University.
06:34 Miss Elphaba, you can room with Miss Glinda."
06:38 Naturally, the trailers put our two leading ladies front and center,
06:41 giving us a preview of their journey from their first meeting
06:44 to the moment everything changes, and even a brief flashback to little Elphie.
06:48 Along the way, we see their hilarious clashes and the growth they experience,
06:52 Elphaba coming into her power and Glinda becoming more compassionate.
06:56 But it's not just those two who take the spotlight.
06:58 We get glimpses of other key characters, too,
07:01 although we're still waiting to meet Bach properly.
07:04 Jonathan Bailey shows up as Fiyero,
07:06 while Nessa Rose makes a fleeting appearance,
07:08 and Glinda's friends Fanny and Shenshen are more formally introduced.
07:12 "Glinda?"
07:13 "Hmph. Eww!"
07:15 "I know. It's my granny's. I'd give it away, but I don't hate anyone that much."
07:20 "Hey!"
07:22 There's also Dr. Dillamond, voiced by Peter Dinklage,
07:25 who graces the screen in all his goatly glory.
07:28 "Please, everyone take your seats.
07:30 In today's Oz, a real sorcerer who possesses true magic
07:34 has become all too rare."
07:36 What's particularly intriguing about this trailer is how it doesn't shy away
07:40 from revealing some character twists that could be considered spoilers
07:43 for those unfamiliar with the show.
07:45 Fans of The Wizard of Oz will know that the wizard isn't all he appears to be.
07:49 The trailer makes no secret of it, either.
07:51 "You have no real power."
07:52 "That's why I need you."
07:55 As for the mad amourable reveal,
07:59 let's just say the trailer doesn't hold back on that front, either.
08:02 Number two.
08:03 Even more iconic references.
08:06 Whether you're a fan of the 1939 flick
08:08 or Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman's stage show,
08:10 there are plenty of hidden gems to discover in the two trailers.
08:14 "Are people born wicked?
08:18 Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?"
08:21 In the featurette, there's a quick moment where eagle-eyed viewers
08:24 might catch sight of the silver slippers that we saw on Dorothy's feet
08:27 in the first trailer, now worn by their previous owner, Nessa Rose.
08:31 In the official trailer, we see Elphaba summoned to the Emerald City
08:34 by Hot Air Balloon, and catch a glimpse of her and Glinda
08:37 seemingly making an escape in one, too.
08:39 Hey, we can't all come and go by bubble.
08:41 "The wonderful Wizard of Oz."
08:43 "Summons you to the Emerald City."
08:45 That being said, we do get to see Glinda arrive in Munchkinland
08:49 in her famous mode of transportation.
08:51 Elsewhere, Elphaba starts to explore the Grimory,
08:54 and the flying monkeys make an appearance, too.
08:56 While poppies are forever linked to the Wizard of Oz,
08:59 it appears that tulips will take center stage in this movie adaptation.
09:03 "Come on, then, what are we waiting for?"
09:05 "Nothing. Let's hurry."
09:06 "Yes, let's run!"
09:09 [Tulips]
09:11 "Come on, come on! Hurry, hurry!"
09:15 In the trailers, we're treated to scenes filled with yards
09:18 of these beautiful, brightly colored flowers.
09:20 At a Wicked presentation during MovieCon,
09:23 attendees found tulips beside each seat.
09:25 They were instructed not to handle them until further notice.
09:28 As the lights dimmed in the auditorium,
09:30 the tulips began to glow in pink and green hues.

09:49 #1. Musical snapshots
09:52 Good news!
09:53 The Passion Project featurette and second trailer
09:55 inject a little more music into this musical.
09:58 Visuals from the featurette showed us scenes that,
10:00 if we had to guess, we'd say probably depicted songs like
10:03 "I'm Not That Girl," "One Short Day," and "The Wizard and I."
10:07 Both trailer and featurette go hard on sharing visuals
10:10 for "Dancing Through Life" and "Popular."
10:12 "Popular. I know about popular."
10:16 Although we don't get to hear the music for "Dancing Through Life" just yet,
10:19 it seems like they're hyping it up to be this movie's 96,000.
10:23 We do get snippets of "Popular," though.
10:25 It's just a tease. This scene already looks promising.
10:28 #La, la, la, la, la#
10:34 Oh, and did you catch the instrumental version of
10:36 "No One Mourns the Wicked" right at the start?
10:38 "Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?"
10:43 The hints of defying gravity in the first trailer gave us chills.
10:46 And guess what? They're just as thrilling this time, too.
10:50 Cynthia Erivo's rendition of that iconic riff is bound to keep us
10:53 buzzing with excitement until November 2024,
10:56 when Part 1 of "Wicked" is set to fly into theaters.
10:59 #Oh, oh, oh, oh#
11:06 If the trailer is anything to judge by,
11:09 we're already so excited we could melt.
11:11 #I love the new show#
11:14 #I'd be so happy I could melt#
11:17 Do you think this film has everything that really counts to be popular?
