00:01Swimming season is here.
00:02A few tips will have you enjoying your neighborhood pool
00:05all summer long.
00:07Every public pool has rules posted
00:09around the facility or online.
00:11Be sure to familiarize yourself with them
00:13before getting in the water.
00:15Proper swimming attire is usually required for entry.
00:18Some people just say, oh yeah, no problem,
00:20pair of jeans, I'm gonna hop in the water.
00:22You're gonna add 15 or 20 pounds of weight to your body
00:26when you're in that water wearing a pair of heavy clothes
00:28and a pair of heavy pants.
00:30It affects your swimming,
00:31it affects your ability to stay afloat.
00:32You should also avoid running on the pool deck,
00:35playing with pool drains and diving in on the shallow end.
00:38Never go head first, never go head first,
00:42unless you are absolutely 100% sure
00:44you know how deep that water is and that it's clear.
00:46All children in the pool should be supervised at all times.
00:50Lifeguards have many duties
00:51and may not immediately see someone in danger.
00:54Parents, if you're out with kids anywhere near water,
00:59do not take your eyes off them.
01:00Please, please, please, don't be texting,
01:01don't be looking at your socials.
01:04It only takes 20 to 30 seconds for someone to drown.
01:07If you see someone struggling in the water,
01:10reach and throw before you go.
01:12Use a nearby object like a rope or pole to reel them in.
01:17Actually, imagine the possibility of them drowning.
01:21They're not thinking rationally anymore.
01:23If they see someone come near them, what are they gonna do?
01:26They wanna go to that next higher level of the water.
01:29They will climb on top of your head
01:30and they will shove you down
01:31because all they wanna do is survive with air.
01:34So that's when one potential drowning can turn into two.
01:38It's also important to keep an eye on the weather.
01:41Get out of the pool if you see lightning
01:43and don't reenter the water until it's safe to do so.
01:46Many of these rules should also be applied
01:48when using a backyard pool.
