Parents, children and members of the community at Brooklands Childcare, Garswood, which has announced it will close in a few weeks.
Transcript
00:00 My name's Melissa, I'm a parent to two children here at Brooklyn's Nursery Garswood.
00:07 We found out last week that the nursery's closing and we've got to find an alternative provision as quickly as possible for the children.
00:15 And it's really shook us. Nowhere else compares to this nursery.
00:20 The staff and the feeling that you get when you walk in the door.
00:24 It's like being part of the family and there isn't anywhere that has an alternative that can offer the same thing or has got the same grounds in our opinion.
00:34 So we really want to fight to save this nursery.
00:36 My name's Paul, my son Arlo has been coming to Brooklyn's now for probably the last 12 months or so.
00:42 He's registered disabled, he's got global development delay.
00:47 So it was really difficult for us to find a nursery that would meet Arlo's needs.
00:54 Obviously since he's been attending, the staff have been fantastic, they've settled him in brilliantly.
01:01 Emma, who is the manager, actually looked after Arlo's mum when she was a baby so they've all been here a really long time.
01:10 And yeah, it's just really upsetting that obviously it's going to be closing down.
01:16 If the nursery's not here, Arlo's got his additional needs.
01:20 It's not going to be a simple process for us just to find another nursery and get Arlo in there.
01:27 We're going through things with the local authority, obviously his one-to-one funding.
01:33 He obviously has a walking frame so you've got to have quite a big setting.
01:38 He has a one-to-one staff member.
01:40 All these things make it much more difficult for us to find somewhere suitable for him.
01:46 So that's the real shame about all this for us in particular.
01:51 And then obviously the local community, we've got new houses getting built just around the corner.
01:56 I think there's two or three hundred houses being built, which is obviously going to be an influx of families.
02:03 So it just doesn't make any sense as to why you would be closing this nursery down
02:08 when we've got all these new people who are going to be moving into the area.
02:13 All the staff have loved the children, all loved it there.
02:16 We just can't understand as to why the owners have made this decision to do what they're doing.
02:22 My name's Jenny. I've lived here since 1997.
02:27 And obviously I'm really concerned being a resident with the effect of the closure.
02:32 We've already got one derelict building, the stag, which has turned into an eyesore.
02:37 We really don't need another one.
02:39 The closure of the nursery obviously affects the wider community
02:44 because where are the people going to send the children?
02:47 There's so many kids who go to this nursery and there's so little nursery provision around here at the moment.
02:55 There's people asking constantly, "I need nursery provision."
03:00 And all you get is, "Oh, it's full, it's full, there's no room."
03:04 So I really don't know what's going to happen.
03:06 People have got mortgages and bills to pay, so they need childcare in the local area to help them.
