00:00 Thousands of faithful participated in a candlelight procession on Sunday night at Portugal's Fatima Shrine,
00:09 one of Catholicism's most famous sanctuaries,
00:12 to mark the first of three reported visions of the Virgin Mary before three shepherd children more than 100 years ago.
00:20 The first of three apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima is said to have taken place on May 13, 1917.
00:29 The story of Fatima's shepherd children has captivated Catholics since their first reported vision.
00:36 In 2017, Pope Francis gave the Catholic Church two of its youngest saints,
00:41 by canonizing two shepherd siblings believed to have seen the Madonna in 1917.
00:46 The Church believes the Virgin gave three children, siblings Francisco and Jacinta Marto,
00:52 and their older cousin Lucia, Dos Santos, three messages, the so-called secrets of Fatima.
00:59 Dos Santos became a nun and died in 2005 at the age of 97,
01:05 and efforts are underway to make her a saint as well.
01:08 Every year, thousands of faithful descend on Fatima, and some pray for miracles for the sick.
