Have the Miami Hurricanes found the proper balance of supplementing their organic high school recruiting with transfer portal additions?

00:00Recruiting versus transfer portal, Brian, it seems like at least numbers-wise right now,
00:06programs like Miami and Florida State are doing very well at both. I was reading an article that
00:12they're actually the only schools in the ACC that in 2024 have both top 12 in the portal and top 12
00:19in recruiting, which is interesting. But then you look at a program like Georgia relies a lot more
00:26on organic recruiting than they do transfer portal additions. They've also had a lot more
00:31time to build up a very, very deep roster. Clemson doesn't use the portal at all. Is there like a
00:37formula in your mind for what's like a good mix of selective portal recruiting to go along with
00:43organic recruiting? Well, there's a couple of consternations here. Number one, you brought up
00:50a really good point. One can make a strong argument that Georgia is the best job in the country
00:54because the state's massive and it's the only really good program in that state with a lot of
00:59talent. They don't have to use the portal. I mean, they just, you know, every now and then a kid gets
01:04there, they'll take a couple, a receiver or something, but they recruit nationally, get
01:10elite kids and just develop them. So it's kind of hard to compare apples to oranges. Miami, when
01:17Mario got there, we heard him say unsolicited. Hey, the roster is not what we thought it was
01:21going to be. He brought that up multiple times with you there, me there, et cetera. Like he
01:26didn't make any bones about it. So in today's world, how patient would you say Miami fans are?
01:31Donna, what would you say? Scale one to 10? Oh, if they're, they're less patient than my
01:37six-year-old, the one he wants candy. Like it's, there's no patience. That's, that's the problem
01:42he's in. Look, you're probably not going to win national titles relying on the portal as much as
01:48Miami is, but they got to get started. Like they were, they were at a negative, like comparing the
01:54roster when he took over to Georgia is comical. So I think starting, it just is starting in 26,
01:59the class they'll finish this one, the next they need to be able to start dwindling on how much
02:04they rely on the portal. Cause they had their system in place now, but like the tackle was
02:08really thin. They're still not quite where they need to be at DB, et cetera. They had to do those
02:13things. Like offensive line might've been their worst spot when they first got there. And of
02:17course, crystal ball and his good buddy, Alex mirror ball, take that very seriously, but now
02:22they've recruited that well enough. I don't think they're going to take many portal kids unless it's
02:25the center. That's, that's a really critical spot. I think Miami's finally to where we can
02:30talk about it. Realistically, I'll be concerned with Miami on the portal next year. If they're
02:36still taking 15 plus kids, that means things aren't going well. But right now I think they're
02:40trending well enough with high school recruits. They just won't have to. And plus in 25, like
02:45Ruben will be a junior, big Maui, Noah, et cetera. They should, they should be a really good roster.
02:50Get top 12 team pretty easily. But this year they had to take more kids. It just, it is what it is.
02:56If it didn't work out, it didn't work out because they weren't going to have enough time on anyway.
02:59Had to do it.
