Religious scholars must utilise their leadership by practising empathy and preaching moderation to instil unity among nations, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In his closing speech to religious scholars from various countries gathered in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (May 8 ) at the Asian Ulama Council 2024, the Deputy Prime Minister said that ulama should also be advisers to policy makers by advocating tolerance and guiding a middle path to do away with the ideas that Muslim religious scholars were extremists in nature.

At the event, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar called on the Muslims to go beyond their own school of thought and stop being divisive.

03:08interpretation of religious texts, educating for tolerance and guiding leaders towards
03:17a middle path that avoids extremism while emphasizing spiritual values.
03:26Additionally, the Council actively counters extremist ideologies and fosters social cohesion
03:39through dialogue and collaboration among various groups.
03:46Engagement with policymakers is vital to advocate for a balanced ground in moderate-sized areas
03:56aiming for inclusive and equitable societies.
04:02Muslims need to be made aware that efforts to realize this unity need to cross the walls
04:10of various groups of thought and ideologies with the goal of achieving the welfare of
04:16the ummah and rejecting extremist and extreme beliefs.
04:22Differences should be used as advantages instead of weaknesses while any similarities should
04:32be used as a source of strength.
04:36Indeed, the glory of the Muslim ummah and the ups and downs of the community, nation
04:43or country lies in this unity.
04:47Scholars and Muslim leaders need to work together to achieve the goal of ummah unity and resolve
04:56any conflicts that occur in society.
05:01In making this mission of ummah unity a success, of course the scholars, leaders and scientists
05:10need to set an example by showing unity among themselves first.
05:16Thus, the organization of the Ulama Council 2004 is part of an effort to bring in unity
05:25among Islamic ulama, leaders and scholars and then reveal it to Muslims so that it can
05:33be adapted into the community life.
