00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best scenes and sequences
00:10 from "Godzilla -1".
00:12 Beware of kaiju-sized spoilers ahead.
00:20 Number 10 - "Godzilla Eliminates the Engineers"
00:24 A tranquil night for a group of engineers turned into a desperate fight for survival
00:29 when a certain kaiju arrived.
00:39 After making a terrifying debut, Koichi Shikishima was ordered to try to shoot the monster down,
00:45 but he became overwhelmed by fear and decided not to anger Godzilla further.
00:51 Koichi and the audience could only watch in horror as the kaiju went on a rampage that
00:56 resulted in the death of nearly every engineer in sight.
01:04 This dark scene effectively established that this version of Godzilla was a force of nature
01:10 that would take no prisoners.
01:12 It also set Koichi down a dark and engaging path.
01:16 After living through this devastating attack, we knew he could never find peace as long
01:21 as Godzilla lived.
01:33 Number 9 - Noriko's Hilarious Introduction
01:37 Shortly after returning home, Koichi's lunch in a public venue was interrupted when he
01:42 suddenly heard people screaming about a thief.
01:49 Before he could process this, the alleged robber handed him a baby and ran away.
01:55 Seeing Koichi awkwardly hold a random infant was hilarious.
01:59 The scene only got better when the thieving Noriko popped out of her hiding spot to reclaim
02:04 the child.
02:13 Although Koichi wanted to leave them behind, he couldn't stop the duo from following
02:18 him home.
02:19 At first, this sequence seemed like a funny break from the bleak story, but it actually
02:24 marked the beginning of the movie's most beautiful relationship.
02:37 Number 8 - Godzilla Pursues the Boat
02:45 Desperate to make enough money to support his newfound family, Koichi decided to get
02:49 a job as a minesweeper.
02:51 On one fateful day, he spotted signs that Godzilla would soon emerge from the depths
02:56 of the ocean.
02:57 Koichi and his crew were forced to improvise a way to keep the kaiju at bay, with limited
03:03 resources and a small boat.
03:13 The sequence was full of great tension and suspense.
03:16 It's also brought to life with stunning visual effects.
03:20 After a few action-packed moments, the chase came to an end when Koichi shot a mine that
03:25 blew up right in Godzilla's face.
03:28 While his accurate strike wasn't enough to take the beast down, it was still satisfying
03:32 to see him get a little payback.
03:43 Number 7 - Koichi's Breakdown
03:45 Godzilla's re-emergence caused all of Koichi's feelings of regret and grief to come bubbling
03:51 to the surface.
03:59 He unleashed all of his negative emotions in a devastating scene.
04:03 When Noriko pushes Koichi to talk about what's going on, he confesses that he feels guilt
04:09 for failing his comrades.
04:11 Instead of letting him be consumed by regret, Noriko does everything she can to prevent
04:16 him from falling into despair.
04:29 The outstanding acting performances here kept us hanging on every word.
04:34 This sequence also served as a realistic examination of how survivors' guilt can keep people
04:40 from living happy lives.
04:42 Fortunately, the conversation helps Koichi feel ready to face his past and start focusing
04:48 on the future.
04:56 Number 6 - Tachibana Confronts Koichi
05:04 After Koichi failed to act during the first Godzilla attack, he got an earful from a mechanic
05:09 named Sosaku Tachibana.
05:11 The two didn't speak to each other for years after the horrific incident, but upon finding
05:17 out that the plan to stop Godzilla required the help of a skilled mechanic, Koichi went
05:22 to desperate lengths to find Tachibana.
05:37 The technician initially attacked his former comrade.
05:40 Tachibana was willing to walk away completely until Koichi promised he'd sacrifice everything
05:47 to stop Godzilla.
05:48 Although their reunion didn't exactly go smoothly, it was definitely entertaining to
05:53 watch these two strained allies work to find common ground.
06:09 Number 5 - Local Volunteers to Face Godzilla
06:12 Although Japanese officials recognised they had to combat the kaiju threatening their
06:17 people, they were unable to mobilise an official military force to take action.
06:30 Instead, they had to ask local citizens to volunteer for a risky plan.
06:38 A handful of locals outright refused to step up, because they were still reeling from the
06:43 aftermath of World War II.
06:45 Just when it seemed like everyone would abandon the plan, a well-timed joke from a local broke
06:50 the tension.
07:05 This small bit of humour was the sign of good things to come.
07:09 Right after the joke was made, a room full of citizens decided to volunteer to stop Godzilla.
07:15 Seeing them step forward made for an emotional scene that got us rooting for this ragtag
07:20 group.
07:29 Number 4 - Godzilla Attacks Ginza
07:32 While we've seen a lot of kaiju city rampages over the years, Minus One may have delivered
07:37 the most brutal city attack ever put to film.
07:49 The relentless kaiju throws vehicles and crushes trains without an ounce of remorse.
07:55 Godzilla also shrugged off military-grade attacks like they were nothing.
07:59 And after the kaiju got warmed up, he delivered a horrific yet awe-inspiring atomic blast.
08:06 A clever blend of CGI and live-action footage made the scene feel real while looking incredible.
08:18 The scene also featured the tragic twist where Noriko seemingly makes the ultimate sacrifice
08:24 to save Koichi.
08:25 By the time this scene came to a devastating close, we knew we had witnessed a Godzilla
08:30 attack like no other.
08:40 Number 3 - Kenji Noda's Rousing Speech
08:44 It was satisfying to watch the pieces of the ambitious anti-Godzilla plan come together.
08:49 After everything had been prepared, the mastermind of the gambit addressed the volunteers.
09:06 Kenji Noda initially stuck to talking about facts and military positions.
09:11 But when someone made a comment about dying, the mastermind responded with a stirring speech
09:17 about life.
09:28 His strong monologue would have worked if it just talked about their upcoming fight
09:33 with Godzilla.
09:34 However, the powerful speech felt more significant because it spoke about how many lives were
09:39 lost during World War II.
09:42 Noda's monologue ultimately served as a strong reminder to his comrades and the viewers
09:47 that life is precious.
09:58 Number 2 - Noriko and Koichi Reunite
10:01 We were gutted when Godzilla's attack tore the fire-forged couple apart.
10:06 The loss affected Koichi so much that he was willing to lay down his life to prevent Godzilla
10:11 from rampaging again.
10:13 But, almost an hour after we saw Noriko face her end, it was revealed that she survived
10:19 somehow.
10:20 There wasn't a dry eye in the house when the two finally reunited in a hospital room.
10:33 Although this moment could have come across as cheesy or cheap, it worked here because
10:38 of the strong writing.
10:40 Koichi and Noriko had gone through hell and back multiple times just to get a shot at
10:45 a normal life.
10:47 Seeing the two get another chance to grow old together in a peaceful time was heartwarming
10:52 and immensely rewarding.
11:18 Number 1 - Koichi Stops Godzilla
11:21 When the plan to take down the Kaiju went sideways, it was amazing to see a character
11:26 nicknamed "Kid" lead a wave of reinforcements.
11:30 As great as his entrance was, Koichi stole the show.
11:33 The hero knew that Godzilla was vulnerable to internal attacks.
11:40 So, when Godzilla opened its mouth to deliver another fatal blast, Koichi flew into the
11:50 creature's face.
11:52 There was a horrifying moment where we thought that the hero had perished in the epic attack.
11:57 Fortunately, his ally Tachibana had prepared an ejection seat in advance.
12:08 That twist served as a great cap on a beautiful and exciting sequence.
12:14 Not only did Koichi defeat a monster, but he also conquered his personal demons in one
12:19 fell swoop.
