Brighton 1 Aston Villa 0 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening, beautiful Sunday evening in Brighton where things are looking a bit brighter
00:06for Villa than they were about two and a half hours ago when the final whistle went at the
00:10Amex Stadium and they lost 1-0 to Brighton. Tottenham's defeat at Liverpool means there
00:17was no damage done, in fact Villa are closer than ever before to sealing a space in next
00:22season's Champions League. Three more points will do it, one more defeat for Tottenham
00:27will do it. The frustration for Villa is that they could have sealed the deal today
00:32with a win. In truth they never looked like getting the win, this is probably one of their
00:35poorest performances of the season. Brighton got the winner with three minutes to go, three
00:40minutes to the 90 to go. Joe Pedro heading in the rebound after Robin Olsen had saved
00:46his penalty. Olsen was Villa's man of the match, he was terrific, he denied Pedro one
00:51on one, he denied Pascal Gros one on one in the first half. Villa's defence played
00:57pretty well under fairly serious pressure for much of the game. Villa in attack mustered
01:05only one goal, this cleaning wagon behind has been trying to ruin just about the full
01:11take of this video but he's clearly just going to try and ruin it as well as he can. Anyway
01:17from Villa's point of view this was less concerning for their Premier League hopes
01:22than their Europa Conference League hopes because for the first time today all season
01:26they looked a tired side. Roberto Deservi said it after the game, he thought they looked
01:30tired. Unai Emery almost agreed and the concern is that they need to go to Greece on Thursday
01:37and overturn a two goal deficit in the Europa Conference League and after watching them
01:41today you just wonder where they're going to find the energy. Perhaps the surprising
01:46thing is that it's taken this long, this is the 13th time Villa have played on a Sunday
01:50after playing in Europe on a Thursday night and their record's been really impressive.
01:56This is just the third defeat, it's only the second time they've lost to a team in the
02:00bottom half so they really have been excellent and it's just a feeling that they are running
02:05out of gas a bit but it shouldn't be too costly because it looks like in a race for fourth
02:09they're going to get over the line.
