No Mow May has been a growing movement hoping to get people to put off cutting their grass for a few more weeks into may to help wildlife flourish for as long as possible. There are millions of gardens in Wales alone, so if everyone decided to wait until June to cut their grass, it could be a massive help to wildlife all across the country.

00:00 So No Mo May, it's a growing campaign organised by the charity Plant Life and what we're really
00:09 asking people to do is to hang up their mowers and their strimmers just for the month of
00:13 May. Anyone who's got control over a patch of grass in their garden, in their lawn or
00:19 a community green space, just to allow that grass and the flowers within it to grow and
00:23 flourish during the month of May because of just the pleasure it brings but also the immense
00:27 benefit to wildlife both in terms of flowers and insects that visit our gardens.
00:32 Lizzie says that the fact the movement is growing is really important and can have a
00:35 massive impact on wildlife all across Wales, helping insects as well as smaller animals
00:40 too and with it being so easy to get involved, Lizzie hopes more and more will take part
00:45 every year.
00:46 Yes, it's definitely a growing movement which is really nice. We've got more and more people
00:51 interested in getting involved and it makes a real difference because we know that we've
00:55 lost over 97% of our wildflower grasslands in Britain over the last century and even
01:01 in Wales that's over 90% still of loss and if you look at the number of gardens and the
01:06 amount of grassland that actually occurs in people's gardens, that people can make a real
01:10 difference by not cutting it and allowing things to flower. It makes quite a big contribution
01:15 towards recovering some of the losses that we've seen in our natural grasslands.
01:20 With so many environmental movements, it's important for both big organisations and individuals
01:25 to be involved and that's particularly important for No Mo May, with millions of gardens all
01:29 across Wales which can help protect wildlife.
01:33 Some of these organisations, they have access to big areas of land but we've got 23 million
01:37 gardens in the UK so if you add all those up, you know, even if a proportion of people
01:42 take part, the cumulative people power of that is massive and of course it's really
01:47 nice, it's something that a lot of people can do, you know, just the little bit that
01:50 you do in your garden is part of this much bigger picture that makes a huge difference
01:54 so yeah, we would really encourage anyone who's prepared to hang up their mower to take
01:58 part.
