00:00So we are loading up the trailers in our gear for a trip up to Moab, Utah, XP, to ride the
00:10Red Rocks up there.
00:12And this is what we're showing up.
00:14This is a Polaris Sportsman 3500 pound winch, and today we're going to show you how to install
00:20this on the Scrambler XP1000S Limited Edition MTB.
00:28Now the good thing about this installation is anybody who has just some basic automotive
00:33mechanic knowledge and a basic set of tools can actually do this easily with the instructions
00:39that are included in the kit.
00:43Now the winch kit comes with the winch itself, obviously.
00:48It has an auto-stop feature, so when you're reeling it in, you can't over-tighten it and
00:52burn up the motor.
00:54It also includes all the wiring that you need to install the switch, it has the relays
00:59and everything.
01:00It comes with the hardware to install the winch, including zip ties so you can tie the
01:04electrical wires to the frame.
01:06And then you also have a handlebar mounted switch to activate the winch, and you have
01:12an optional wireless control to activate the winch remotely.
01:19Now the first step in this installation is to remove the front hood and disconnect the
01:23battery.
01:30Now that we've got the hood removed, we're going to disconnect the battery using a 10mm
01:34socket with a quarter inch wrench.
01:45Next we're going to remove the stock front bumper from the scrambler using a 13mm socket.
01:57We've got the bumper removed, we can install the winch using the included 13mm bolts, but
02:14first we'll start by cutting some zip ties to free up the wiring harness from the winch.
02:32Make sure you have the winch facing the right direction with the electrical harness facing
02:35the right side of the machine, because it is possible to install the winch upside down.
02:41You might want to get some help from a friend because the winch is a little heavy.
02:45Have them lifted into position while you insert the fasteners into the frame.
02:59Now that we've got the winch fastened to the chassis of the scrambler, we're going to take
03:02our torque wrench, set it to 20 foot pounds, and make sure the fasteners are tight.
03:23Now that we've got the power cables coming up alongside the frame here and up to the
03:28battery, we're going to take our zip ties and fasten those cables to the frame.
03:40The first connector we're going to hook up is the handlebar mounted switch which goes
03:44on the brake side of the handlebars.
03:46You want to make sure that the letters on the switch are facing upward and that the
03:49cable and the connector are facing towards the inside of the handlebars.
03:57Make sure you don't over-tighten these because the screws are going in the plastic.
04:00You only want about two foot pounds.
04:02Anything more than that, you can strip out the threads.
04:07The next step, you're going to want to consult your manual and the wiring harness diagrams
04:11for your specific model.
04:12Remember, this covers the Sportsman also.
04:14Now the Polaris scrambler already comes pre-wired for this winch kit and a lot of the connectors
04:19are already in place so you can just plug them in and go.
04:22Once you've made all your factory connections and made sure they're secure, it's time to
04:25hook your battery back up and then we'll test the winch to make sure it works before
04:30we put the bumper and the hood back on.
04:37Now we've got our battery hooked back up so I'm going to reach over to the ignition and
04:41turn the power on to test out the winch.
04:44Take our handlebar mounted switch first.
04:47Push on the out button and the cable should come out.
04:51It does.
04:52Now we'll bring it back in.
04:58So next we're going to test the wireless remote.
05:01It has its own out and in switch for the winch but it also has a power button right here
05:05at the bottom.
05:06You want to make sure that the power is on.
05:07You'll see a red light at the top once it's engaged.
05:10I'll push the out button.
05:11It should activate the cable.
05:12The in button brings it back in and it should auto stop which it does so you can't over
05:21tighten the cable and burn up the motor and the winch.
05:49Now that our install is complete we're ready to hit the red rocks of Moab.
