00:00Hey there, Hernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated.
00:03Chargers today, get a victory.
00:05First victory for Justin Herbert as an NFL quarterback.
00:08He stepped up big today.
00:10Over 300 yards throwing, three touchdowns over the air.
00:15And then, hey, let's add a little bit of running to that.
00:18Five carries for over 60 yards and one rushing touchdown.
00:22Herbert was really huge today for the Chargers,
00:25and he had been for weeks past.
00:27But today, him and the team really did step up.
00:30It seems like Anthony Lynn's message got across to the team
00:33that they needed to do better.
00:35They got Melvin Ingram back today on defense.
00:38They got Justin Jones back.
00:40That meant that the Chargers defense could get a little bit more depth,
00:44which they needed because some guys like Jerry Tillery,
00:47Utena Nwosu, they were playing long minutes,
00:49and it paid off.
00:50Utena Nwosu, one and a half sacks today.
00:52Joey Bosa got half a sack.
00:55Guys stepped up.
00:56They really did what they needed to do.
00:59Second half of the game, Chargers come out.
01:02They were up by two points.
01:05They pumped the ball to – they were going to punt the ball.
01:08Offense had stalled, and they get a blocked punt.
01:11You're just – people – like Anthony Lynn said, he thought to himself,
01:15oh, no, not again.
01:17But, no, it did not happen.
01:18Chargers offense stepped up.
01:21They did – the defense did allow Garner Minshew to get a little crazy.
01:25James Robinson running back over 100 yards today.
01:28But the Chargers defense at critical moments was able to stop Minshew.
01:32There was a fourth down play where he rolled over to his right
01:35at their own 40-yard line.
01:37He's able to roll to the right, and you thought, oh,
01:40he's going to get the first down.
01:41Rayshawn Jenkins shoots out of the can and comes up and tackles him down.
01:45Very good play from the defense at critical moments.
01:49Like I said, Justin Herbert had a 70-yard bomb to Jalen Guyton.
01:54Then Michael Badgley had been – Michael Badgley's been very shaky,
01:58the kicker, for a couple – the last few games.
02:00Tonight he missed an extra point, and he missed a field goal.
02:03But at the end of the game, they needed a 30-yard –
02:05or a 35-yarder to put the game out of reach, and he hit it.
02:09The game was out of reach.
02:10Chargers win.
02:11Now, next week they have the Denver Broncos.
02:14They face a familiar division rival, which Anthony Lynn says they need
02:18in the divisional games.
02:19They face Melvin Gordon, who was their former running back.
02:22He was here for five years.
02:23Now he's a Denver Bronco, so it'll be interesting.
02:26The reason why behind me you see that the Rams logo is back there
02:31is because they play the Chicago Bears,
02:33a very rare doubleheader here at SoFi Stadium.
02:36Today the Chargers get the W against the Jaguars.
02:39Tomorrow the L.A. Rams will face the Chicago Bears.
02:45My buddy Eric Williams, the Rams writer, will be here tonight.
02:50Again, Chargers victory, 39-29.
02:54Big win for the Chargers as they move on to a division rival next week.
02:59That's all I have from SoFi Stadium.
03:01I'm Fernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated.
