00:00What's going on, Al?
00:05What's going on? How are you?
00:06Alive and kicking. Good to see you.
00:09First question, man, is when did you decide
00:11it was good to come for people's jobs
00:13in the podcast game, man? Jesus.
00:15Yeah, you know, two weeks before camp,
00:19Jason came up to me with the idea,
00:21hey, we want to do a podcast by BC Football
00:25and kind of push it out on kind of a day
00:27in the life of a student athlete
00:29and kind of joke around and have fun with it
00:31and just talk to the guys.
00:32People want to hear what's going on and everything.
00:34So I jumped on that opportunity.
00:36You know, I want to do something later on down the road
00:39in the media, broadcasting,
00:40or whatever really comes my way, but something in that field.
00:43So when Jason brought up the idea of doing the podcast,
00:46I was like, 100%, this is a great start.
00:48It's fun to do, hanging out with the guys,
00:51you know, food, it's awesome, everything I love.
00:54Indeed.
00:55What's been your favorite part so far?
00:57Through what is it, three episodes now?
00:58Yeah, three.
01:01I mean, they're all great, but, you know,
01:03I think my favorite one so far was Phil.
01:05We kind of, I've had a good relationship with Phil
01:07since he got here, I hosted him.
01:10We kind of joked around, we ate some food, and it was good.
01:14Plus, it was interesting because he just got cleared
01:17the day before, so it was kind of interesting
01:19to see his thoughts and hear him out,
01:22his feelings going right into camp,
01:24getting cleared and kind of being freed
01:26from that whole situation.
01:28Is there anything weird about being the guy
01:29asking the question as opposed to being the guy being asked?
01:31It's kind of like that Spider-Man thing.
01:33Yeah.
01:35Yeah, so actually, the first time with Coach Hafton,
01:37I was talking to Jason, I was like, this is weird.
01:39Usually, I'm getting asked a question,
01:41so I'm just answering kind of on the spot,
01:43where then I'm asking the questions,
01:45and I got to react to what he answers to me.
01:48So it's a little different, and I'm working through it,
01:50but I feel like I'm getting better every time.
01:52Last one, obviously, you've been vocal on Twitter
01:55about the One Play campaign.
01:58Right.
01:59Just can you express your thoughts on where you guys
02:01are at with that and why it's important to go?
02:04Yeah, so guys like Ben, Zion, Max,
02:08this is their last year and their last season,
02:10and we've already put in so much work this summer,
02:13coming back in early July, putting in the work,
02:17quarantining and doing everything we have to do to play
02:20and sacrificing as a team so we can play,
02:23and we've done everything right.
02:25We've had zero positive cases in over three weeks,
02:28probably even longer, and the coaches,
02:31everyone's doing everything that it needs,
02:33being safe medically, the medical staff,
02:35everyone is doing everything we need to,
02:38and we just want to play.
02:39It's their last year.
02:41It's a big year for everybody,
02:42and we feel that we'll do whatever it takes to play.
02:46We feel safe, and it's fun playing.
02:49I love football. It's what I do.
02:50I love it, so I want to do what I love.
02:54We'll go next to Trevor Haas.
02:57How you doing, Alec?
02:58How's it going? Doing well, thanks.
03:00I'm just curious if you can speak to the firepower
03:02of this offense. I mean, you guys have so many playmakers
03:04every spot now.
03:05Do you feel like you're just really coming along overall?
03:07Yeah, you know, it's exciting to see
03:09because going in day one, you're like,
03:12we got a good unit, Phil's coming in at quarterback,
03:14Dennis, I mean, they're both awesome
03:16and great quarterbacks. They're leaders.
03:18They're great players, and you have playmakers
03:20like Zay, David, Travis.
03:23I'm sure I'm missing a lot of guys, and they're explosive.
03:26And then you've got up front,
03:27we have four returning offensive linemen
03:29who were all ACC last year, and you go in excited.
03:33And then from just watching from practice one to practice,
03:36I think this was practice seven,
03:37you can already see the improvement
03:39and kind of the chemistry forming
03:41because even though there's four of us,
03:42there's five offensive linemen, and Jack, Finn,
03:45Nate, and all of them are doing a great job
03:46competing for that spot,
03:48and you can kind of see the chemistry forming.
03:50And then with Phil, Dennis, whoever's throwing the ball,
03:52running the ball, you can see the chemistry
03:54forming between the running backs,
03:56receivers, quarterback, tight ends,
03:58and we just look explosive.
03:59So it will be exciting once we get out in the field
04:02and kind of keep improving with these practices coming up
04:05what we're going to do and how explosive we'll be.
04:08Thanks.
04:09We'll go next to Andy Backstrom.
04:12Yeah, kind of on that point, what has it been like
04:14working in the offensive line
04:16and watching that right guard battle kind of pan out
04:18where you got some guys, you know,
04:19Nate and Christian and Finn working for that spot?
04:23What's it been like working with them
04:24and watching that pan out?
04:26You know, just the improvement from the short spring practices,
04:32the improvement from Christian, Nate, Finn at right guard,
04:37they've improved, and you can tell they're fighting for it,
04:39and they want it. Someone wants it.
04:41But also, Ben has been doing guard in practice, too,
04:44right guard, and we're moving Jack to tackle
04:46and other guys to tackle
04:48to see maybe someone else can play that right guard
04:51and play tackle. We're going to play the best five guys.
04:54No matter what position, we can all move around.
04:56And everyone wants it, and everyone's battling for it.
04:59I've seen, like Nate, this is the best I've seen him play.
05:02Jack, I know he was hurt last camp,
05:05so he hasn't really had a lot of time to practice,
05:06but his improvement is great.
05:08Christian, he's just a big monster.
05:09He mauls guys. He needs to work on his technique,
05:11but he's working on it, and you can see every practice,
05:14everybody's getting better.
05:17We'll go next to A.J. Black.
05:19Hey, Alec. How you doing?
05:20I'm good. How are you doing?
05:22Good. My question is about the offensive line room.
05:25What has been the energy or the mood in that group?
05:27How are you guys working as a unit?
05:29Do you guys...
05:31I mean, I've seen the stories on your podcast.
05:32It's great, but tell us a little bit about the room.
05:35Yeah, you know, I'll say it right away.
05:39There's no room, offensive line, any position group
05:42in the whole entire country that's as close as us.
05:45We do everything together as a group.
05:47We eat lunch together.
05:49We sit at the same spot and assign seats.
05:51We do everything together.
05:53Just everyone loves everybody.
05:55We're always joking around with each other,
05:56but we're working hard, and it's fun.
05:58We make it fun, so if, let's say,
06:00I'm having a bad day or not playing great,
06:04Ben's there to pick me up, and it's not just,
06:06like, older guys, younger guys.
06:08We're all together. It's matched,
06:10and everybody loves each other.
06:11We have a fun time, but we also know there's a working time,
06:14so we kind of balance that out, but it's great.
06:17You know, this is the best unit in the country
06:19to be around and be with, and it's fun.
06:21There's nothing like it.
06:24And we'll take our last question today with Andy.
06:29Having an older brother at the NFL level,
06:31do you guys compare notes at all about,
06:32you know, going through his quarantine period
06:34and, you know, adjusting back to football
06:36and the protocols you guys have at BC
06:38and what he's doing with the Falcons there in Atlanta?
06:40Mm-hmm. You know, so when the quarantine happened,
06:44I absolutely went home, and Chris came out
06:46to Massachusetts a little bit after
06:47because they canceled OTAs and everything.
06:51So it was great.
06:52I was working with Chris one-on-one every day,
06:55me and him working out, me and him doing football together,
06:58so I got a lot of great techniques
07:01and coaching from him, and obviously he's done it,
07:03and he's a great player, so I get basically one-on-one
07:05coaching with an NFL guy every day, lifting with him,
07:09so he's pushing me lifting.
07:11And then, yeah, he still checks in,
07:13and I send him film and everything from practice,
07:16and obviously he critiques me and tells me
07:18what I have to do better because I always have to improve.
07:20And we're in contact all the time,
07:23so he's telling me about his practice.
07:24I can't obviously get to his film
07:27because of obvious reasons, but he sees mine.
07:30I show him mine, and he tells me what I got to improve on,
07:34and during quarantine, it was awesome
07:35because it was like we were in high school again,
07:37just working together in the front yard,
07:39in the backyard, going up to the field,
07:40working out, running, just beating the crap
07:42out of each other in the front yard.
07:44So it's kind of funny, but, you know, it was great for me
07:46because I got that one-on-one coaching
07:48that a lot of people going home don't have.
07:51Great. Alec, thank you so much.
