00:00 Probably so it was a tough loss tonight.
00:02 What kind of lessons do you take away from a game like that?
00:04 And what do you tell your team after a loss where it was a tough game for you guys?
00:09 >> Yeah, I just went in there and told them, they came out swinging in the second
00:14 half, they came out swinging in the first quarter.
00:16 They showed me they can play with anybody.
00:20 We turn the ball over five times, they scored 20 points off of turnovers.
00:24 You can't beat anybody turning the ball over five times, you can't.
00:28 And obviously that's on me and our coaches and the players and we have to fix it.
00:31 But we turn them over five times, some deep in our own territory with the momentum
00:35 we had.
00:36 I mean, if you look in that first quarter, we were running the ball better than we
00:40 had all year, throwing the ball.
00:41 We looked unstoppable on offense.
00:44 And it's just, it's self inflicted, we have to hold on to the ball.
00:47 That's exactly what I told them, we're gonna learn from this.
00:53 And I can't wait to get back and practice and get it right.
00:56 But I'm even more confident now, you guys can all think I'm crazy.
01:00 But it just shows me the type of group we have, and I can't wait to play again.
01:06 Obviously, defensively, we didn't stop the run.
01:11 We knew they ran the ball for 300 yards a game, and
01:13 they ran the ball for 300 yards again tonight.
01:16 Missed tackles, some foolish penalties.
01:20 We need to coach better, we need to play better, and we'll make sure we do that.
01:24 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:34 >> Rich, I think you're on mute.
01:41 >> I didn't know I was up, okay.
01:43 No, coach, just talk about ball security.
01:45 I mean, you made that an emphasis after the last game.
01:47 Just what happened?
01:50 I mean.
01:51 >> No, Rich, I gotta look hard on the film.
01:53 We did make it an emphasis, and
01:55 truthfully, we've been emphasizing it since we've been together.
01:58 We work it every single day, and we work it hard.
02:00 And I made more of an emphasis on it this week.
02:04 The interceptions, they are what they are.
02:07 I want Phil to let it go, and we throw the ball, it's gonna happen, right?
02:12 But the fumbles aren't.
02:14 In the one, I don't know what happened.
02:15 It looked like Hunter was late with the motion, and we mistimed it.
02:19 I'll have to see it on film.
02:20 And he kind of bumped into Phil, and that led to the other.
02:23 But we can't lose the ball.
02:27 Our backs gotta do a better job of holding it.
02:28 And like I said, I gotta do a better job of coaching.
02:31 >> We'll go next to Julian.
02:35 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:38 >> Hey, Jeff, can you hear me?
02:39 >> I can hear you, Julian.
02:40 >> Perfect.
02:41 You've touched on it a bunch already, but I think, yeah,
02:44 three turnovers in four games.
02:46 You had three in your first four possessions this game.
02:49 And you're still down ten at the half.
02:51 How much does that set you back in terms of opportunities lost?
02:55 And then kind of what happened after that that you couldn't do that?
02:59 >> Well, I mean, think about what you just said, Julian.
03:01 We turned the ball over three times within the first four possessions, and
03:04 we were only down ten points.
03:06 And two of them, I believe, were deep in their territory.
03:09 It's a huge momentum shift, right?
03:13 And it leads us playing more defensive plays against a really good offense.
03:17 The key to the game was time of possession and moving the ball forward and
03:20 not giving them the ball.
03:23 And we failed to do that.
03:24 It's just, like I said, the way we came out swinging and running and
03:31 throwing, just shot yourself in the foot and sent us backwards.
03:35 And we can't come back from something like that,
03:37 five turnovers against a good Virginia Tech team.
03:39 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:42 >> Next question for Kevin Stone.
03:43 [BLANK_AUDIO]
03:45 >> Hey, coach.
03:47 I'm just kind of curious what the process is after the game like this.
03:51 Will you watch the film on the flight home?
03:54 Will you give yourself some time to kind of wind down?
03:57 Just kind of how does that work for you?
03:59 >> Yeah, we'll all watch it on the flight home.
04:00 We'll get back late tonight.
04:04 And I'll bring the players in a little bit later to get their rest.
04:07 I'll bring the staff in a little bit later.
04:08 I'm not gonna be a guy who lands at the airport and
04:10 tells the whole staff that they have to come to work at 7 AM.
04:14 So guys gotta get their rest.
04:15 I'm not gonna treat the staff any different win or lose.
04:18 And I'm not gonna treat these players any different win or lose.
04:21 I'm gonna coach hard whether we win.
04:23 And I'm gonna coach hard if we lose.
04:25 It's about the process.
04:27 I thought we had our best week of practice, which is why I'm really disappointed.
04:30 And you can see, we did have our best week of practice.
04:33 And the way we came out, it showed.
04:35 We just didn't execute.
04:37 [BLANK_AUDIO]
04:40 >> Let's go to Andy Backstrom.
04:41 >> Yeah, if you talked about the importance of stopping the run,
04:45 what kind of problems did Hen and Hooker pose tonight in terms of,
04:49 especially on the zone read, it seemed like you guys had a hard time wrapping them up.
04:53 >> Yeah, I mean, if you look to the first third down when we blitzed,
04:56 it looked like we had them sack three or four times.
04:58 I'll look hard to scheme when we get back and look at the film.
05:03 It looked like we were struggling to get off the blocks and
05:06 just finishing our tackles.
05:07 I don't know if we're tackling too high, but we'll fix it.
05:10 [BLANK_AUDIO]
05:13 >> Next question for Christopher Heidel.
05:16 >> Coach, how are you doing?
05:18 >> Good, thank you.
05:19 >> Talk about Phil's performance tonight, throwing 51 attempts out of 28.
05:24 I know you guys were throwing the ball a lot, but
05:26 just talk about his performance this evening.
05:28 >> Yeah, proud of Phil, the way he hung in there.
05:33 Prime example of who he is as a player and a person is the tackle he had on
05:36 the interception.
05:37 A lot of guys would have started to jog off the field and got off a block and
05:42 looked like a linebacker out there.
05:44 I want Phil to be aggressive, I like the way he plays the game,
05:47 he gets better every single week.
05:49 And like I said, I'm sure we'll watch the tape and
05:53 he'll see some plays he could have made.
05:55 But tough guy who continues to throw the ball and line it up.
05:58 >> Let's go back to Julian.
06:00 [BLANK_AUDIO]
06:03 >> Jeff?
06:05 >> Yeah, so this team you already know, right?
06:08 They've had their own situation playing down 15, 20 guys,
06:12 a couple of games, postponements, all that kind of stuff.
06:14 Hookers just coming back themselves.
06:18 What does that say about an opponent?
06:19 Kind of what they bring, even if you don't know what they have,
06:23 this is a threat in a very dangerous way.
06:27 >> I mean, it's a good team, Julian.
06:28 I think they got a bunch of depth.
06:32 They got two or three quarterbacks that look good on tape.
06:34 I think 21 is one of the best backs in the country and
06:37 they got a really good old line.
06:39 We knew that going in and I thought we had a really good plan.
06:43 I'll be curious to see the tape.
06:45 >> And then also, we were talking last week just about,
06:49 don't believe the tape, you know what I mean?
06:50 You guys are on the road, don't believe, you still got a lot of work to do.
06:54 Does a game like this kind of help not believe if you're starting to buy in,
06:59 then you still got a lot of work to do?
07:03 >> Again, I mean, win or lose, I stress the process and
07:08 I stress the importance of getting better every week.
07:10 And I'm sure when we turn on the tape, we're gonna see some things we did really
07:13 well, but unfortunately in football, if you make big mistakes like we did,
07:19 you can't win.
07:20 So we'll watch the tape closely and we'll get better, Julian.
07:25 >> We've got time for two more and we'll start with Emma Healy.
07:30 >> Hey, coach, so obviously barring the big turnovers from your running backs,
07:35 you had three different guys rotating in at back tonight.
07:38 What does that tell you about the strength of your team and
07:41 the depth of your team that you've got?
07:43 >> Well, we got Travis back, right?
07:45 And we got Bailey going early on in the game and Pat deserves to play.
07:49 All those guys work really hard and
07:51 we believe if guys deserve to play, we're gonna play them.
07:56 Like I said, it looked like we were off to a really good start in the run game and
08:01 we're gonna continue to improve that.
08:02 >> And we'll finish with Andy Beck from.
08:05 >> Yep, Jelani Galloway and
08:08 Jalen Gill had some pretty huge receptions tonight.
08:10 What did you see from them and what's it like to have some guys,
08:14 in addition to Zay and Hunter, to really help the offense move the ball?
08:17 >> It was great, it was great to see them step up, make some really big catches.
08:21 We're gonna need that from those guys.
08:23 I thought Jelani took a step last week and it looked to me like Jalen took a step
08:27 this week and hopefully we'll continue to build and
08:30 those guys will continue to get better.
08:32 >> All right, thanks a lot, coach.
08:35 >> All right, thanks guys, I appreciate it.
