What are some bold predictions for the Big 12 conference this season?
Transcript
00:00 Big 12 football is almost back, which means we are making some predictions for
00:04 the 2022 college football season.
00:07 I'm Claudette Montana-Pattison with SI right now and
00:09 joining me is John Hooper of All Sooners.
00:12 John, give me your top predictions for the Big 12 this season.
00:16 >> Yeah, Claudette, how's this for a bold prediction?
00:19 Baylor, the Baylor Bears are gonna lead the nation in run defense this fall.
00:24 How's that?
00:25 I said Baylor.
00:25 The Bears won the Big 12 last year.
00:28 They had the Big 12's nastiest overall defense.
00:30 They gave up just 118 yards a game.
00:32 They bring back seven starters and
00:34 although they did lose a couple of studs like Jalen Petrie and Terrell Bernard,
00:38 Baylor's got one of the top interior defensive linemen in the country,
00:41 Nsiaki Ika.
00:43 They also added one of the best interior run stuffers in the nation in Jackson
00:48 Player out of the transfer portal from the University of Tulsa.
00:51 They also bring back a couple other guys, Cole Maxwell and Gabe Hall.
00:56 Those guys were starters up front.
00:57 And a couple other things that I think will help Baylor lead the nation in run
01:01 defense, it's a bold prediction, but
01:02 I'm gonna stand by it because Dave Miranda is a defensive genius.
01:06 We all know that.
01:06 And frankly, outside of B.
01:08 John Robinson at Texas and maybe Deuce Vaughn at K State,
01:11 I think the Big 12 is kinda light this year on elite running back talent.
01:16 The second bold prediction I would have for the Big 12, Oklahoma,
01:21 wide receiver Marvin Mims, fantastic talent.
01:25 Hasn't been all that productive.
01:26 I predict he's gonna lead the Big 12 in receptions this year,
01:29 possibly yards and touchdowns as well.
01:31 He only had 32 catches last year, right?
01:33 So why would I say that?
01:35 This is a kid who set Texas high school records for single season and
01:39 career receiving yards.
01:41 Had 117 catches last year.
01:43 I'm sorry, in high school as a senior, 117.
01:47 So he's unbelievably productive.
01:51 I think he's really hungry too.
01:52 In his first two years under Lincoln Riley, 69 catches combined in two years.
01:57 So now under Jeff Levy, new offensive coordinator,
02:00 Oklahoma's gonna run a lot of tempo.
02:02 They're gonna get a ton of offensive snaps.
02:04 Dylan Gabriel, you're gonna see.
02:06 He's already developed a rapport with Mims, the quarterback out of UCF.
02:09 It's kinda cool.
02:11 It's like best friends, hang out all the time, work out together,
02:13 all that kinda stuff.
02:15 And then Marvin has added about nine pounds of muscle this season.
02:18 So you pair all that together,
02:20 someone who averages 19 yards a catch in his career, I predict a big year for him.
