00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invictus Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:16 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:19 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday the 19th of April.
00:24 Clements clenching on, two games to go for Gilles with slim chance of promotion still
00:29 hanging in the balance, run into the ground, thousands of pounds worth of equipment stolen
00:34 from Chatham Sports Group and motivation to move.
00:39 Tunbridge is Dame Kelly Holmes urging us to take small steps to get active.
00:44 First of course a round up of the headlines and Sevenoaks swimmer Eva O'Carroll is set
00:49 to make history in Paris this summer when she becomes the first black woman to swim
00:54 for Team GB in the pool.
00:56 The 17-year-old who trains in Repton will join a team of 33 Great Britain representatives
01:01 across pool and marathon swimming during the 2024 Olympics.
01:05 O'Carroll grew up swimming with her twin sister Isabella when she found her love for the sport
01:10 at Sevenoaks' swimming club before being called up to represent the British senior team in
01:15 Loughborough.
01:16 Her first test will get underway on the 27th of July.
01:20 Mason Sam Noakes is aiming to extend a boxing record this weekend as he takes on Jan Mendy
01:26 for the European lightweight title.
01:28 The 26-year-old, whose record currently sits at 13 undefeated knockouts, says that the
01:33 fight will finally prove whether he's a so-called hype job.
01:37 It comes after Noakes stopped fellow unbeaten prospect Louis Sylvester in February to win
01:41 the Commonwealth and British lightweight titles.
01:44 He currently has the longest knockout streak of any active British fighter alongside cruiserweight
01:49 contender Hamza Shiraz.
01:51 But despite the impressive record, his opponent tomorrow is reported to have said it won't
01:55 have an effect on him.
01:58 In football, Gillingham head coach Stephen Clements is hoping to dampen his opponent's
02:02 party as the Medway club head to Mansfield Town for their penultimate match of the season.
02:07 Clements' Gilles currently sit 10th in the League Two table, just three places and three
02:12 points from the playoffs, where the Stags have already claimed a spot in League One
02:17 come August.
02:18 It's still mathematically possible for Gillingham to get a playoff spot, but it will require
02:22 some favourable results elsewhere.
02:25 Here's the Gilles' boss speaking about his approach to these final two games this week.
02:29 "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail, as they say.
02:31 It's a famous saying and I've always tried to live my life like that.
02:36 So we do as much preparation as we can and we'll prepare for the best version of Mansfield
02:41 and we'll go there and try and win the game.
02:43 We know it'll be difficult.
02:44 I'm sure there'll be a bit of a party atmosphere there.
02:47 But obviously we've got to go and try and take the game to them and try and quieten
02:51 that atmosphere down.
02:53 But we have shown on a number of occasions this season that we can take anybody on and
02:57 I've always said that about the group downstairs, where we've struggled, is to find that consistency.
03:02 But we'll keep trying.
03:03 We've got two games to go starting on the weekend and we want to finish the season as
03:06 strong as we can."
03:07 With that in mind, let's take a look at the football fixtures happening this weekend.
03:13 As you've been hearing, it's Gillingham's last away game of the season.
03:16 Steven Clements' quest to finish in the playoffs will require a win and favourable results
03:21 elsewhere.
03:22 But the easy, Mansfield have, as I said earlier, already secured their promotion to League
03:27 One, winning all of their last three games.
03:30 In the National League, it's being dubbed as Survival Saturday as Ebbs Fleet travel
03:34 to Ballroom Wood for their final game of the season.
03:36 The Fleet just need a point to guarantee their spot in the top flight of non-league football
03:40 next season.
03:42 Likewise for the visitors, it's a must-win for Ballroom, who are also on tenterhooks
03:46 in the relegation fight.
03:47 And it's one more to go in the National South too.
03:50 The relegated Dover and Dartford are both at home, as well as Maidstone, who take on
03:55 Hampton and Richmond.
03:56 The Stones have already secured a playoff spot, the highest they could finish is third.
04:00 Meanwhile, mid-table Tumbridge Angels are the only Kent side to know they'll definitely
04:04 be in this division next season.
04:07 And in the Izmir Premier, after winning the League Cup this week, it was straight back
04:11 to training for the Chats, as Kevin Hake's men have two games left to defend their second-place
04:15 spot and confirm a home advantage in the playoffs.
04:18 Whilst Folkestone welcome Dulwich Hamlet, Margate can't afford to lose if they want
04:21 to avoid relegation against Wingate and Finchley.
04:27 Moving on, a Medway sports group says children from poorer backgrounds will be hit the hardest.
04:32 It comes after thousands of pounds worth of equipment was stolen from them.
04:36 The Sports On Your Doorstep communities provide sports sessions in disadvantaged schools across
04:41 the county.
04:42 But the group says the break-in will slow down the delivery of services, and parents
04:46 say their children rely on the project.
04:48 Oliver Leeder-Da-Sacks has more.
04:51 Just what you need, eh?
04:53 Our lock-up's been broken into and ransacked and loads of gear nicked.
04:58 The news no-one wants to hear, let alone from a company that provides sports sessions for
05:03 some of the most disadvantaged children in Kent.
05:06 Last Wednesday's Sports On Your Doorstep saw a break-in that led to thousands of pounds
05:10 of equipment being taken, forcing them to put sessions on hold.
05:14 The whole reason we exist is to engage young people and families in those underserved communities.
05:22 We have to take the sport right to the heart of those communities to remove as many barriers
05:28 as we can, and one of those barriers is obviously cost.
05:30 And us bringing equipment and our coaching staff right at the centre of these communities
05:36 means that cost and access to provision is one big barrier that's removed.
05:41 So obviously without this equipment that allows us to pop up in those communities, it leaves
05:46 us in a difficult position.
05:48 Where I'm standing right now in this room, there would have been archery tags, footballs,
05:53 dodgeballs, you name it, it would have been here.
05:56 Around £4,000 worth of equipment was stolen, and that will have a significant impact on
06:00 the community going forward.
06:03 I think it was just disappointment and just people were upset because it's our local community
06:08 that we're trying to deliver sessions to and it's happening in our community.
06:12 It's not like this equipment is somewhere else, it's within the community that we're
06:16 trying to deliver to and it's a real shame that it's happened within our own community.
06:19 I was only talking to some children last week at a session and they asked, we were in a
06:23 town centre doing some boxing, and they said "why are you here?"
06:26 So I said "oh we're here to keep you guys away from causing trouble in the local fast
06:30 food restaurants or whatever it is they're doing" and I said "if we can get you away
06:34 from that and get you to change your mindset, then we've done our job" and I think unfortunately
06:40 obviously if we can't get out and engage with these people and just try and trigger their
06:44 mindsets then unfortunately they may go down the wrong path, which is what we don't want.
06:48 Parents and volunteers are worried what a theft like this will mean for their children
06:52 going forward.
06:53 It helps them socialise with other children, it gets them out off the street doing something
06:58 creative, getting involved with sports that they love doing.
07:02 The coaches are amazing, they support the children in all ways that they can.
07:06 They can't now provide certain sports for the children until the equipment's replaced.
07:11 Yeah, it's happening on your doorstep, it's heartbreaking.
07:15 The community is thinking of ways to raise funds to help replace the equipment, while
07:20 Kent Police say enquiries are still ongoing.
07:23 But with the Easter holidays coming to an end, schools may be left without the sessions
07:27 that their pupils have come to love.
07:30 All of these are the facts for KNTV in Medway.
07:34 Well moving on, it's a huge one this weekend for all of those across Kent who'll be taking
07:38 part in the London Marathon.
07:39 A few weeks ago we spoke to Wayne Smith, who you just saw in that piece then.
07:43 He'll be taking on the marathon in a wheelchair.
07:45 Now he doesn't use one day to day, but his daughter Esme, well she does after being diagnosed
07:50 with a spinal condition.
07:51 I caught up with him earlier to ask how he's feeling with just two days to go, but I started
07:56 by asking if there's any updates on the theft his sports club experienced.
07:59 Yeah, no thanks for having me again guys.
08:03 Unfortunately there's no update at the moment.
08:05 We're waiting to hear back from the police.
08:07 They've got all the details now and everything in place, so we're just waiting to hear from
08:12 them now.
08:13 Yeah, we do wish you the best with that.
08:14 Let's talk about this Sunday then, a real positive thing you've got coming up.
08:18 How are you feeling about the London Marathon?
08:20 Because you're not just running it, you're doing it in a wheelchair.
08:23 How are you feeling?
08:24 Yeah, the butterflies are kicking in now, definitely.
08:27 I was up at the expo today getting my bib and all my race pack and seeing everyone there
08:33 and the buzz is all created.
08:35 So it's certainly there, the nerves are kicking in.
08:38 It's good though, if you don't have nerves it doesn't mean that it's meaning anything
08:43 to you.
08:44 So yeah, the buzz is real and we're ready to go.
08:47 Yeah, brilliant stuff.
08:48 What's the furthest distance you've gone now in the wheelchair?
08:52 I did up to 17.5 I did along the towpath, which was excruciating.
08:58 I'm hoping that the crowds will carry me, but most importantly the flat surface because
09:04 the towpath isn't a flat surface.
09:07 I'm hoping that's going to aid me all the way.
09:10 No, brilliant.
09:11 And of course, one other big force behind you will be your family and will be Esme of
09:15 course as well.
09:16 What's been the kind of messages from your family in these last few days?
09:19 It's been brilliant.
09:21 I'm receiving messages from all over the place, people that I work with and through
09:26 community and the family obviously are so proud and everyone still thinks I'm crazy
09:32 and that we're getting everything done.
09:35 But we took Esme up there today and she absolutely, it was brilliant seeing her there and that's
09:40 what it's all about.
09:41 It's to show her that anything's possible.
09:45 And we met a couple of other wheelchair users that are doing it today and they were blown
09:51 away with what I was doing and just like, and I think one of them's in my wave so I
09:55 may even be going along with him.
09:57 So we shall see.
09:58 No, it's incredible stuff.
10:00 And yeah, like you said, you've got your number, you've got your bib today.
10:02 You've got it there with you as well.
10:04 Fantastic.
10:05 37886.
10:06 Yep.
10:07 So you can track me on that on the app.
10:10 So that's the number if anyone wants to track me, go around and see how I'm doing and how
10:15 long it takes and everything.
10:16 That's my number.
10:17 Brilliant stuff.
10:18 Yeah, we're ready to go.
10:19 Yeah, absolutely.
10:20 And of course, people can still donate to your fundraising as well.
10:24 How's that coming along?
10:25 Yeah, oh, it's incredible.
10:26 We're up to, I looked on the train on the way back, we're at 10,600 pounds, which is
10:32 absolutely incredible.
10:33 And I can't thank everyone enough that just keeps adding it up.
10:38 But yeah, the page is open.
10:39 It'll be open for a few more weeks.
10:41 And it'd be amazing if we can get to 11,000 now.
10:45 The original target was two and then we went for 10 and we've got the 10.
10:50 And if we can get to 11, this is going to be incredible because it's just going to help.
10:54 Like the males are out so much.
10:56 Yeah, absolutely.
10:57 Well, massive congratulations there.
10:58 10,000.
10:59 That's incredible.
11:00 Before I let you go, do you think you'll carry this on in the future?
11:04 Can you see yourself maybe picking up something else in the wheelchair, maybe wheelchair rugby?
11:08 You never say never.
11:09 Never say never.
11:10 So I've been invited down to have a game with Gravesend Rugby League Wheelchair Club that
11:17 have lent me the wheelchair.
11:20 So I will definitely honour a game there.
11:22 But you never say never.
11:24 But currently I have no intentions.
11:26 But let's get through the weekend and we'll see if anything else arises.
11:31 Brilliant.
11:32 Never say never.
11:33 Thank you so much for joining us and sharing your journey with us.
11:36 Best of luck for this weekend.
11:38 Brilliant.
11:39 Thank you.
11:40 Thank you.
11:41 Wayne Smith there raising money for Demelza.
11:43 Great stuff.
11:44 Time for a break now.
11:45 Coming up, we'll have your cricket update plus an interview with an Olympian.
11:48 Don't go anywhere.
11:49 Thanks for joining us.

20:41 >> I think that's a really good point.
20:47 It's something a lot of people deal with and a lot of people have that blockade to getting out.
20:53 I suppose the minute you get out and get that exercise, that starts to dissipate.
20:59 >> I think that's a really good point.
21:05 Putting the message out there that even though I had achieved something really, really big that was on a public platform, it didn't mean that I didn't struggle to get there.
21:13 Whereas when I came back, especially from Athens, I got put on this real high pedestal because I was the first person to win two gold medals at the same games.
21:23 I was the first person to win two gold medals at the same games.
