00:00 Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all
00:05 the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove Albion, Crawley Town and Sporting Sussex. I'm Matt
00:09 Pohl and this week I'm joined by Brighton, Hove Albion writer Derren Howard, Crawley
00:13 Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Morton, who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds. Finally,
00:18 what seems like eternity, Albion will return to action this weekend after an enforced two-week
00:22 break. We'll preview Brighton's upcoming pair of Premier League fixtures this week. Plus,
00:27 we'll take a look back at a fantastic win for Crawley Town that moved them into the
00:30 League Two play-offs. You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and
00:35 pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk/sport and you can check out other great videos on
00:40 shotstv.com and freeviewchannel276. You may also be watching on latest TV, so thank you
00:45 very much for tuning in. But first, we will start with Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, who
00:50 started in England's two-all draw with Belgium at Wembley on Tuesday evening. The defender,
00:57 once again, was given a torrid time by Roma's Romelu Lukaku, as his mistake allowed the
01:01 striker to provide the perfect cross for Uri Tielemans to head in at the far post to give
01:05 Belgium the lead. It was a bit of a rough old night for Lewis Dunk, wasn't it, Derren?
01:11 Has he fluffed his Euro chances after that performance, do you think?
01:17 I hope not. I hope it doesn't stand against him. It may well. Southgate has in the past,
01:25 he's stood by the likes of Harry Maguire when he's made mistakes in similar positions on
01:31 the pitch. It would be interesting to see if he offers Lewis Dunk that same leeway.
01:38 Obviously Maguire has been to tournaments in the past and has played really well at
01:42 major tournaments. So how that will impact Dunk going forward, I think it's really going
01:47 to depend upon the next 10 games of Premier League matches that's going to take place.
01:52 Brighton have got 10 more games left of the Premier League season. How he performs in
01:57 those is going to have a huge impact on whether he does go to the Euros or not, as a squad
02:04 or as a starter. I think it will make an impact. It came so quickly after his mistake for Brighton
02:12 against Roma as well. He was in a similar area of the pitch. Romelu Lukaku was chasing
02:16 him down again. He wasn't outpaced. Sometimes Dunk is criticised for a bit of a lack of
02:22 pace. He was actually in the right position on the pitch but he just got his footing wrong,
02:28 went with the wrong foot, couldn't clear the ball and Lukaku again was on to him. Whether
02:33 he had a flashback to that Roma moment last night when that was happening and he lost
02:39 his concentration, I really don't know. I was gutted for him actually because he's played
02:46 so well the last couple of years. So consistent, so good. On the two biggest games of his career
02:53 perhaps, Roma and then this match against England. I know it's a friendly but it was
02:59 to really cement his place. He's made those two big errors. Real shame for Dunk. I hope
03:05 Southgate stands by him. I hope he doesn't stand against him.
03:10 It must be something about Belgium and Brighton players, Sam. A Brighton player also had another
03:17 Brighton player had a bit of a nightmare against Belgium on Saturday, didn't they?
03:21 Evan Ferguson, yes. He missed a penalty in a 0-0 draw on Saturday. That's a real shame
03:28 obviously for him not to be able to end that goal-scoring drought that he's on. It's a
03:34 strange one because obviously at the start of the season he couldn't stop scoring. He
03:39 was scoring hat-tricks against Newcastle and he just felt like he was Brighton's next £100m
03:45 player. I'm not sure what's happened but he seems to have just lost that confidence in
03:50 front of goal. I've noticed it with Brighton, he's really not been himself. He's not been
03:56 bad in the sense that he's able to pick the ball up in good positions and hold the ball
04:00 up and play other people in. It's just in front of goal he's really struggling. It could
04:04 be one of those things really where if he gets one the floodgates could open and just
04:09 get that confidence back. It's a shame he couldn't have done that for the Republic of
04:13 Ireland and then come back to Brighton and have that goal-scoring touch back again. They
04:17 really need him, especially with Rijal Pedro who I think is still out. It was a shame that
04:23 he didn't find his goal-scoring touch a bit early when Pedro was out so they wouldn't
04:26 have missed him as much maybe. But he's still very young so I wouldn't say it's a huge concern
04:31 at the moment. I think he just needs to go back to what he was doing so well before.
04:36 It's all about confidence in football at the end of the day. I really do feel like if he
04:40 gets a couple then I think we'll all be laughing and he'll go back to the form he was in before.
04:45 Can we talk about Belgium's kit quickly? I love Belgium's kit. It's great isn't it? Did
04:51 it look a bit odd last night? England playing Belgium and the two coloured kits they were
04:56 wearing. It didn't look like an England vs Belgium game did it? Belgium's kit was fantastic.
05:01 If you didn't see it, it was basically Tintin and I absolutely loved it. I read about it
05:08 with the England kit as well actually. It was really smart.
05:12 Yeah, it was really smart. Where did they hide the cross on that kit? I don't know.
05:19 I think that's probably for a podcast done by GB News I think if you want to get some
05:24 George's cross. Anyway, moving back to Matt, he's on the pitch.
05:27 It was the best cross of the night. That was a good cross wasn't it?
05:32 Yes, going back to Albi Matt. As mentioned, Albi are back in action after a four-night
05:39 off. It's not an easy return for them as they travel to Tull, chasing Liverpool on Easter
05:44 Sunday. How do you see this one going Sam? They couldn't have asked for a harder fixture
05:48 really could they?
05:49 No, no. I think it pretty much is. Obviously going to the Etihad or Anfield or the Emirates
05:56 were probably the worst places to go and they managed to get Anfield to come back to. But
06:02 you never know with Brighton, do you? I think this could be a game where they'd turn up
06:05 and win and we'd be all very surprised because I'm not expecting them to, to be totally honest.
06:11 I think a draw would be a great result in the circumstances. Liverpool are starting
06:15 to get players back. Obviously, it was incredible really with the amount of injuries and players
06:19 unavailable that Liverpool had that they still managed to keep their top race going really.
06:23 So now they're starting to get these players back. Salah will probably be fully fit and
06:27 firing for the game. I think there's obviously been some concern about the form of Gakpo,
06:33 who hasn't really lit things up for Liverpool just yet. But there's so much talent in that
06:37 squad really. I think obviously it's going to be Alexis McAllister, who scored for Argentina
06:40 during the international break and he's in great form. So it's a really, really tough
06:46 game for Brighton to get back to. And you just really hope that after the international
06:51 break, they feel a little bit recharged. Obviously, Lewis Dunk's case can put his
06:55 errors behind him and can just really put in a good performance. And you just hope that
07:01 they can really test Liverpool in the game. Yeah, I'm not expecting too much. I think
07:06 I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool came out and won the game and kept their top race
07:10 going. But as long as Brighton go toe-to-toe with them and don't crumble, that's all you
07:15 can really ask for really in the situation they're in.
07:17 One other cause for positivity, Jeremy, is the potential return of two key men for the
07:23 game at Anfield. Can you tell us a little bit about who could be returning for Brighton
07:26 and how big of a boost it will be for Roberto Di Serbi to have those two back?
07:31 Yeah, huge, huge boost. Jal Pedro and James Milner, they've been missing for a large chunk
07:38 of the season now, both with thigh injuries. Di Serbi was saying before the international
07:46 break that he hopes to have them back for the Liverpool game. I think Jal Pedro, just
07:52 to feel, I think Jal Pedro has got more of a chance than James Milner. I think James
07:55 Milner, maybe it might be a struggle for him to come back so quickly against Liverpool.
08:00 But I wouldn't be surprised if Jal Pedro makes an appearance. Whether that's from the start
08:07 or from the bench, I think he could be involved. But he's been really good for Brighton this
08:12 season. 19 goals since his £30m move from Watford and he's been a miss. So, for these
08:19 last 10 games where they're going for Europe, hopefully he can get back to goal-scoring
08:24 form. And as Sam was saying, help the likes of Evan Ferguson, help the likes of Danny
08:29 Welbeck. And then James Milner, obviously he's great to add some experience to whether
08:35 he's playing at full-back, whether he's playing in midfield. So, his return will be very,
08:40 very handy for the last 10 matches. And as well as Julio Nciso, he's now coming back
08:46 to form as well. Tarek Lamptey as well. Hopefully his fitness is going to improve. So, hopefully
08:52 starting at Liverpool, there's going to be some good news on the injury front and a bit
08:58 better for the rest of the season.
08:59 Well, absolutely. And once Brighton have travelled to Liverpool, they'll then be hitting the
09:05 road to take on Brentford on Wednesday 3rd April. It's another tough away game, isn't
09:10 it, Sam? It's another one that you can't really call, I think. But how do you see this
09:14 one panning out?
09:15 Yeah, as you say, another really tough game, isn't it? I think Brentford are a bit of a
09:21 mixed bag this season. I think they've obviously had some poor results and some good ones as
09:26 well. So, a bit like Brighton, I guess. But obviously Brentford, in comparison, are nowhere
09:31 near safe. They really are struggling in the sense, if you look at the table, they're just
09:36 five points clear of the relegation zone. So, they're going to be desperate to pull
09:40 away as quickly as they can. So, I think in that sense, it's going to be a really tough
09:45 game for Brighton to be able to go to Brentford to a team that's obviously still looking over
09:50 their shoulder and have so much to play for. And obviously, Brighton do as well in getting
09:54 to Europe. They're not fighting for their lives like Brentford will be. And Ivan Toni
10:00 obviously is back and he played for England as well and got a goal for penalty spot. So,
10:04 I'm sure he'll be confident and looking to follow that up in the game. So, a tough one.
10:10 I think, hopefully, they get a decent result at Liverpool, get the confidence going. Obviously,
10:14 hopefully, Jal, Pedro, etc. are back and you never know. And I think Brighton can hopefully
10:19 follow that on and get a positive result at Brentford as well.
10:22 Haven't they got a really tough run in, Brian? Isn't it like statistically, they've got the
10:26 hardest run in out of the rest of it?
10:29 Yeah, they've got the hardest run in according to the stats. They've got Liverpool,
10:33 Arsenal, Manchester City, Man United and Chelsea all still to play this season.
10:37 Man United for a year, surely.
10:39 Oh yeah, same with Chelsea. You would have thought.
10:41 Yeah, and Newcastle and Islington Villa as well, all got to play this season. So, it's a
10:46 really tough, tough run in for Brighton. So, I think they've got to be looking at that game
10:49 at Brentford as one they've got to be winning, I think, to give themselves a little bit of a
10:55 buffer if they're going to try and get to the European places.
10:58 Hmm, absolutely. Well, best of luck to Brighton over the Easter weekend in the coming weeks.
11:03 Thank you very much, Sam and Darren. We're going to take a quick break.
11:06 When we come back, we'll be talking all things Crawley Town.
11:08 Crawley Town moved into seventh and into the League Two play-offs with an excellent 3-1
11:14 win at Tramier on Saturday. And by all accounts, Mark, it sounded like an incredibly professional
11:18 performance and probably should have been more for the Reds.
11:21 Well, it did. Yeah, absolutely. And yeah, no, before the game, I think we said last week that
11:26 it was a really tough trip, Tramier. They were in form. They'd beaten Mansfield. They'd beaten
11:32 Wrexham recently. And to go there and do the job they did was fantastic. And they didn't even have
11:37 Scott Lindsay on the touchline because he's serving a two-match ban. But they got two early
11:42 goals through Jeremy Kelly and Jay Williams, who we'll come on to in a minute, both their first
11:48 goals for the club, giving 2-1. And when Luke Norris pulled one back, sorry, I think it was
11:54 about 21 minutes. And I think a lot of people would have thought, and a lot of teams probably
11:59 would at Tramier, sort of, right, OK, they're backing it and sort of sit back. But Crawley
12:03 still went for it. And yeah, I think they had a goal disallowed for a foul on the keeper,
12:09 but Danny Lowe scored. But then Orsi got his goal, his 18th of the season, I think it was.
12:15 Incredible. And just a really, I mean, Scott Lindsay was like a cat that got the cream
12:21 afterwards. He said he was quite relaxed watching up from the top. But after you go 2-0 up after 10
12:26 minutes, you're going to relax a little bit, aren't you? So, no, really good. And it's great
12:31 that they're actually in the playoffs because we've been talking for so long. They've got games in
12:34 hand. They're a point off the playoffs. And now they're in the playoffs and they've still got
12:38 games in hand. So it's, yeah, they've got games in hand and it's in their hands. So, yeah, really
12:44 looking forward to this weekend. Yeah. Sticking with the Tramier game, there was one surprise
12:50 inclusion in the Crawley XI for that game, wasn't there, Mark? The not-so-mystery man now, I suppose.
12:55 He appeared.
12:56 Who was, Scott Lindsay, starting XI, and how much of a boost did you think that gave the Reds?
13:00 Oh, it was a huge boost. He didn't just name him in the squad, he named him, he was still captain,
13:06 it was Jay Williams. Yeah, we all thought he was going to be missing. He went, he got called up to
13:11 St Kitts and Nevis to play against San Marino. That was on, so Monday night he played at Stockport,
13:17 then he flew to San Marino, I think they were playing in San Marino, weren't they?
13:21 Yeah.
13:21 And he was in the squad for the Wednesday night. He didn't play, he was on the subs bench,
13:28 didn't play. They won 3-1 incredibly. And then by all accounts, he picked up a bit of a knock
13:33 in training. And yeah, he thought it'd be best if he came back and got treatment with Crawley Town,
13:39 because people he knows, I think that's quite regular, isn't it, in football,
13:43 people go back to where they were, people they trust to treat them.
13:47 And then it turned out he was fit for Saturday. They got permission from St Kitts and Nevis,
13:52 which I'm sure Crawley and Scott Lindsay were very grateful for. And then he came up,
13:56 popped up and scored his first goal after 10 minutes. Yeah, incredible. Yeah, what a week
14:01 in the life of Jay Williams. I mean, he is someone we haven't actually spoken to yet this year. He's
14:06 never been put up for press or anything afterwards or pre-game or anything. So it'll be really
14:12 interesting to speak to him about what that whole experience was like. Yeah, crazy old week. But
14:17 yeah, no, it was a huge boost for Crawley to have him back in the squad. I mean, would they have got
14:22 the same result? Who knows? They were in such good form, they might have done. It certainly
14:27 didn't hinder their chances of winning up at Tranmere there. Absolutely. We mentioned Scott
14:34 Lindsay. And as you said, Mark, he took the game in for the sidelines as he was serving a touchline
14:37 ban. But post-match, he said he wanted to ensure everyone had their feet firmly on the ground
14:42 as the Reds went up to seventh and into the playoffs. Sam, it might be easy for Lindsay
14:46 to keep the place grounded, but I suspect the supporters are beginning to start to dream,
14:49 aren't they? They certainly are. When you look on social media, especially after that win at
14:54 the weekend, all the comments underneath the Crawley Towns post were just saying,
14:59 'Now it really does look good. There's lots of excitement.' And I think someone said,
15:05 'Should we get the hotel booked for Wembley already?' I just get a bit of that. But I hope
15:10 no one's doing that and tempting fate. But it really does look on at the moment and it's
15:16 incredibly exciting. I think we've mentioned before, it's still very surreal how Crawley
15:20 have managed to do this just literally 12 months after they looked like they were going to be
15:23 getting relegated. So the job that Scott Lindsay's done can't be overstated, really. And I think it's
15:30 brilliant where they're at. And they just have such confidence when they're playing now. And
15:34 even as a journalist and fans watching them, you don't expect them to lose, which
15:39 is an incredible position to be in. And they can really hopefully keep this momentum going.
15:44 And as long as they do that, then I think there is every chance they'll get to get to
15:51 Wembley for the playoff final. Absolutely. You mentioned the confidence there, and I think this
15:56 is kind of encapsulated by Dinilo Orsi's comments after the game against Trammey, when he said that
16:00 if Crawley could, they'd play again tomorrow. And again, you've also touched on it there,
16:05 Sam, but when you compare the position the Reds are now into last season, it's absolutely
16:08 mind-boggling. I think most people at the start of the season would have had Reds as favourites to
16:12 go down. What have been the main differences between this season and last? And how much
16:17 credit should Scott Lindsay get for this incredible upturn in fortunes for Crawley Town?
16:21 Yeah, massive credit, really. He's made such a huge difference. And he's just brought in some
16:26 belief into the players. And also, he's made some great sign-ins. And he was questioning
16:30 for some of the players that he brought in. People saying that, why is he looking at non-league and
16:35 players that have not been tried and tested? But they've come in with a point to prove,
16:39 learning on the job, learning with other players that have done the same thing, come up from non-league,
16:43 and they've all just made such a huge impact and have really kind of bedded in well with them,
16:48 with the other players. And obviously, you've got players like Clyney Lawless that's come in,
16:51 and you'll all see that just hit the ground running straight away. And I don't think anyone
16:56 expected them to have done that. And obviously, we've seen the improvement of Corey O'Day in goal
17:00 as well. That's made such a massive difference, not conceding any goals at key moments.
17:05 But just probably the biggest thing is just having that consistency in the dugout, really. I think
17:11 obviously, last season was so hectic with the management changing so many times, the coaching
17:15 staff, and the players probably not knowing who was going to be leading them out for the next
17:19 training session kind of thing. And now they just had someone like Scott Lindsay. There was a little
17:23 bit of talk about him leaving, obviously, during the season, but he stayed to his job, really,
17:30 and he's kind of showed that belief and faith in his team and the players and what he can achieve
17:35 at the club. And I think it's brilliant. And obviously, the fans love him, I think. I think
17:40 he's really, really kind of gelled into the team and really made a big impact in Crawley. So
17:45 hopefully, he'll be here with Crawley for a long time yet, not just this season.
17:49 Absolutely. And Mark, it seems every week I ask you whether or not you think the play-offs are
17:54 on for Crawley Town, but it does feel like the play-offs are on for Crawley Town now, doesn't it?
17:59 It really does. They're just, yeah, they've got, what is it now? They are seventh and they've got
18:05 two games in hand over Gillingham, who are below them, and AFC Wimbledon. Yeah, I mean,
18:11 I mean, mathematically, they can get automatic promotion, can't they? Win all their games.
18:15 How can they?
18:15 I think so, mathematically. I think there's a lot of things that have to go their way for that to
18:19 happen. But yeah, but it really is on. And yeah, looking at this weekend, you've got Doncaster
18:26 Rovers on Saturday, good Friday, sorry, at home in front of a sellout crowd. So there's going to
18:31 be 5,000, 6,000 people at the Crawfield Stadium Saturday. Doncaster though, weirdly, although
18:37 they're 19th, they've only lost one in the last 10 games, which just seems bizarre to be 19 in
18:43 the league at that. So it's not going to be easy. And we've seen Crawley Fulter at home against the
18:48 likes of Accrington, Morecambe, Crewe, et cetera. So yeah, they've got to really be on it, but I'm
18:54 sure they will be this weekend. And it's going to be really interesting. But then it's those three
18:58 games afterwards, Newport away. I know you've got, do you want to ask the question, Matt?
19:03 Well, yeah, I was going to ask you, they've got Doncaster, as you said, on good Friday,
19:07 and then they're off to Newport on Easter Monday with games against Mansfield and Wrexham on
19:11 horizon. How important is it that, what would Crawley need for them to feel good about themselves
19:16 going into those games, Mark, in terms of points?
19:18 I mean, if you ask Scott Lindsay that, I think you could lose both games at the weekend and
19:23 he'd still feel good. But I mean, he wouldn't be happy, but I'm sure he'd still be like,
19:29 well, it's still in our hands. But I think, I think they'd be disappointed if they didn't get
19:34 at least three points from those two games or four points even of winning a draw would be a
19:40 brilliant return to, I mean, if they win both games at the weekend, it doesn't really matter
19:48 what happens at Mansfield and Wrexham. If they lose this weekend to these two games,
19:52 then that's where you don't want to be getting into a rut and like, oh God, now Mansfield and
19:57 Wrexham. But yeah, I can see they should win Saturday, Friday. Newport's not an easy place
20:05 to go, but I think they've won there before. So I can't see them. I can see them getting something
20:10 at Newport and then yeah, Mansfield and Wrexham. It's yeah, we've seen Tranmere beat them,
20:15 both those teams recently. So the way football works, if Tranmere beat them three one,
20:21 one nil, Crawley win. So that means Crawley must beat them, mustn't it?
20:25 So yeah, it's got to be, yeah, they're really tough games, obviously Wrex, because they're both
20:30 going for the title, obviously, but they play each other Good Friday, I think.
20:37 So yeah, really big, really big game. And there's a couple of other big games at the weekend.
20:42 Gillingham are playing, I can't remember who, I should have done this research a bit better,
20:47 but there's a couple of really big games in that playoff area, including Gillingham and MK
20:53 Dons, I think. So yeah, it's going to be really, really interesting. But yeah, a good four points
20:58 this weekend. That sets Crawley up magnificently, I think, for the final run in.
21:03 Absolutely. Well, best of luck to the Reds this Easter weekend. We'll move on to score
21:06 predictions. Starting with you, Sam Norton. You talked about Liverpool at home to Brighton on
21:11 Sunday. How do you see that one going in terms of the scoreline?
21:16 I think Liverpool will win this one. I think Liverpool will come out 2-1 winners from this.
21:20 Deren, do you see much hope for Brighton?
21:25 Oh, you're on mute.
21:30 Sorry, chaps. I think after the international break, it's always a little bit of a leveller.
21:38 So I'm hoping that will work in Brighton's favour. I'm going to go for a very optimistic
21:44 2-1 to Brighton, I think.
21:46 Ooh, Mark, do you share Deren's optimism?
21:48 Not in the slightest. I'm going for it. I watch Brighton and Rome, unfortunately.
21:55 So I'm going to go for a Liverpool 3-1, I think. I do think Liverpool will win the league this year.
22:02 Do you think?
22:04 Yeah, I do think they will.
22:05 Then Brighton take on Brentford on Wednesday. Deren, again, another tough one for me to call,
22:14 I think. How do you see that one going?
22:15 Yeah, this is a really tough one to call. I'm going to go for a 1-1 at Brentford.
22:21 Like you say, I think it's going to be very difficult for Brighton.
22:25 Sam, how do you see that one going?
22:27 I think Brighton will win this one. I'm going to go for 3-1, 3-1 Brighton. I think
22:34 Jal Pedro will be back and firing and Evan Ferguson will break his gold drought.
22:39 Mark, do you share that with Sam? Do you see that?
22:42 No, I'm going to agree with Deren this time. 1-1.
22:46 And then, yeah, we've got the Crawley Towns two games, starting with their home game against
22:51 Doncaster on Good Friday. I think you alluded to as much. I think you can see it being a
22:55 Crawley win, but what scoreline do you think it will be?
22:57 I'm going to go 3-1 Crawley. I think that it's going to be absolutely rocking at the
23:01 Broadfield Stadium.
23:02 Absolutely rocking. Will it be rocking, Sam?
23:04 Yeah, I agree. I'm going to go for 2-0, 2-0 Crawley. A clean sheet. And, yeah,
23:10 and the party will literally be restarting.
23:12 Deren, are we going to make it a clean sweep of wins then?
23:15 Yeah, I'll go with Sam. I think they're on a roll at the moment. They're comfortable 2-0.
23:19 And last but by no means least, Crawley at Newport. Mark, another tough one for me, I think.
23:25 Yeah, I think they will get something, but I'm going to go. I mean, they shocked me at
23:30 Tranmere. I predicted that they will get a point at Newport last week and I will stick
23:35 with that. I'm going to go for a 1-1.
23:36 Sam, more very quickly?
23:39 Yeah, I was going to say the same. 1-1 draw. I think we should be a great result.
23:41 And last but by no means least, Deren.
23:44 I'll go for a draw as well. 2-2, 2-2.
