00:00 From 44th Street in Camelback, this is the Arizona Daily Mix.
00:06 And it all starts right now.
00:08 Good morning and welcome to the Arizona Daily Mix. I am Brad Perry.
00:16 And I'm Lexi Romano.
00:17 And before we start the show, Lexi before we came on was singing something to get us going. Go for it, Lexi.
00:22 Good morning, Mr. Rooster. Good morning to you. There you go. You're welcome, everybody out there.
00:32 This song comes from?
00:34 Super Simple Songs on YouTube. This is an Arlo Condon favorite, everyone.
00:39 When we wake up every day, we sing the Mr. Rooster song, courtesy of Super Simple Songs.
00:45 I like that. I like that. You know, there's one song that, um, rickety dickety, I have to find it.
00:50 But it's a really cute-- Rickety dickety doc, the best friend of the clock?
00:52 No, no, this is another one they sing. It's like an old group. I'll find it for you.
00:55 Because it started making me think about that. That's my morning song.
00:58 Oh, okay. Let me know. We'll do your morning song tomorrow.
01:01 I like that. So, hey, today on the show, because up first, you're going to want to just go, aww.
01:07 Yeah, that's right. We are meeting one of the cutest adorable puppies in honor of National Puppy Day this weekend.
01:13 And trying to help this puppy to be all yours or how you can foster puppies.
01:18 That's great. You don't want to, but I think I'm going to take this one home.
01:22 You are? I think so.
01:24 Brad! There's two? Good, because I need two more.
01:26 You have to take both of them. Yeah, I do. I have to take two.
01:28 Are these, are they, do they have to go together? These two?
01:32 Well, they're going to go together.
01:33 Because you know, you're like, I've already decided.
01:35 But you know how some, when they're littermates, and they tell people, like, oh, they have to go together.
01:40 We can't split them up. So, we're going to find out.
01:42 There you go, Brad. Four dogs is totally reasonable.
01:45 It is! I think that's reasonable. That's fine.
01:47 Hey! Well, as long as they're going to a good home, that's great.
01:50 Hey, plus, I wasn't here last year for the Poke competition, but I'm not missing out on it this time.
01:57 Chef Tommy and Chef Blaze are here for a rematch and to talk about the Arizona Poke Wars.
02:03 I love this. And we love both of these guys, of course.
02:07 But Chef Tommy is a personal favorite. We love him.
02:10 Every one of his concepts is amazing. There you go.
02:12 And Chef Blaze, he is a native, he's a Hawaiian, right?
02:16 Yep. And so, yes.
02:17 And he really knows what he's talking about.
02:19 Yeah. But Tommy, I don't know, Tommy's got some little twist in there.
02:21 Tommy's got some, Tommy is a chopped champion.
02:25 Yes. So, look at the way he's chopped.
02:28 So, I don't know, he can chop up some poke.
02:29 I like it. There you go.
02:31 Also, two of our Arizona College basketball teams are competing in the NCAA playoffs.
02:36 And we're getting a look at how U of A is shaping up to play in today's game.
02:41 That's a big deal.
02:42 It is. And that brings us to trending.
02:44 And that's what's trending today, thanks to Gerber Injury Law,
02:47 for sponsoring this part of Arizona Daily Mix, the big NCAA championship.
02:53 Now, it's not the Final Four.
02:54 The Final Four takes place the weekend of April 6th, here in the Valley.
02:59 So, it's a big thing going on.
03:01 Actually, I think we're going to have Jay Perry, who's in charge of the tournament,
03:06 here next week with us.
03:08 Nice. Awesome.
03:09 As I'm rushing this a little, because everybody's wondering about U of A,
03:13 Wildcats, Bear Down.
03:14 There, I'm helping them out.
03:16 That's what you have to say when you go, "Oh, you go to U of A, Bear Down."
03:19 Wildcats, Bear Down.
03:20 Exactly. Wildcats, Bear Down.
03:22 Just flows naturally.
03:23 Yeah. So, I didn't know they were number two.
03:25 I didn't know they were seated as number two in the tournament.
03:29 And they take on number 15, Long Beach State, at 2 p.m. today.
03:33 Is that like their rankings?
03:35 Yeah. So, they're ranked number two.
03:37 They're way higher. They're way further above than number 15.
03:41 Yeah.
03:42 So, they're going to wipe the floor with Long Beach, is what you're telling me.
03:44 Well, we're hoping. But, you know, that's the thing about the NCAA tournament,
03:47 is that there's a lot of Cinderella stories going on.
03:50 And so, usually, if you are out there betting--
03:52 But we're not Long Beach fans, so we don't want a Cinderella story.
03:55 No. No.
03:56 We just want the top dog to win.
03:58 To move them around a little bit.
03:59 So, we're excited.
04:00 Yeah, I'm trying to look and see if there is--
04:01 We don't want the underdog here.
04:02 No, we don't.
04:03 And then, tomorrow, our very own GCU plays.
04:06 Yeah, that's so cool.
04:07 We'll be talking about that a little bit.
04:08 But they are playing against St. Mary's, and they don't play until 10 o'clock.
04:12 What number are they?
04:13 They're ranked number 12.
04:14 Okay.
04:15 12, and St. Mary's number 5.
04:17 So, that would be a Cinderella story.
04:18 So, that could be a Cinderella story right there.
04:19 So, tomorrow, we want the Cinderella story.
04:20 Yes, we want the Cinderella story tomorrow.
04:21 Not today.
04:22 Be good.
04:23 But, yeah, a great lineup here going on, but it all kicks off today at noon.
04:29 So, different stations have different games.
04:31 Just remember that, that you have to go see.
04:34 But I'm trying to think of any of the other good ones.
04:37 I'm trying to think.
04:38 So, ASU is not in it.
04:40 Nope, ASU is not there.
04:42 But we have two this year.
04:43 No, there isn't.
04:44 That's huge.
04:45 But a lot of--
04:46 It's U of A and GCU.
04:47 Yeah, we have BYU fans, so they play today at 12.40.
04:50 I saw Baylor on there, which is--
04:52 In my family, we had some cousins who went to Baylor, so Baylor's--
04:55 When does Baylor play?
04:56 Tomorrow.
04:58 They're tomorrow.
04:59 20, yep, tomorrow.
05:00 Northwestern plays.
05:01 That's my Chicago.
05:02 Okay, nice.
05:03 Nice, nice, nice.
05:04 I'm trying to look at any other--
05:05 San Diego State.
05:06 So, I think what we're going to do--
05:07 That's great.
05:08 I know we talked yesterday, are we allowed to do a bracket or anything, but I say we do a bracket.
05:12 We just, like, ask for--you're doing the whole, "Let's do it and ask for forgiveness," rather than ask for permission?
05:17 Yes.
05:18 But I want our bracket to be mascot picked.
05:21 Like, pick the mascots for the--
05:23 Like, who's the best mascot?
05:25 Yeah, or we say, "Okay, you know what? That's a really cool mascot. They're going to win."
05:29 Does that make sense? Instead of saying--
05:31 Oh, instead of the teams.
05:33 Yeah, the team.
05:34 Gotcha.
05:35 So, I think we're going to try to put that down.
05:36 What are the mascots? So, I know--so, it's Wildcats.
05:39 Wildcats, and GC is the Antelopes.
05:41 And then it's the Antelopes.
05:42 Yeah.
05:43 The Antelopes are great.
05:44 That's the coolest mascot I've ever heard.
05:46 So, I have a question. I guess, could it come down to the Antelopes and the Wildcats playing against each other?
05:53 I don't know. Can that happen?
05:55 Is that the same kind of bracket or are they on the same bracket? Does anybody know?
05:59 Nobody knows.
06:00 Nobody knows.
06:01 We'll see.
06:02 We'll find out.
06:03 It'll be the Wildcats versus the Antelopes.
06:05 Yes.
06:06 Well, anyways, we'll talk about that tomorrow here on The CW7.
06:08 But today, we have a new lineup, so grab your seat on the couch and enjoy some laughs and more with us today.
06:14 Starting this afternoon with two hours of your favorite funny man, Steve Harvey at Family Feud at 4.
06:19 Following that up with the Big Bang Theory, bring it on the laughs at 6 and 630.
06:24 Then it's our new CW primetime lineup with the Conners at 7, followed by Son of a Critch at 8 and 830.
06:31 Then it's your favorite funny man again at 9.
06:33 Hang in there for the craziest sitcom on TV, which is Mom at 10.
06:38 It is all about the smiles here at The CW7.
06:40 As we like to say, it's all good.
06:44 Oh, oh, oh.
06:48 Hi.
06:49 Oh, hi.
06:50 Oh, there we go.
06:52 That's it, as they call this, a thirst trap.
06:55 That's right.
06:57 You may ask, how much is that puppy in the window?
06:59 Well, Kimberly of Arizona Animal Welfare League is here to tell us how you don't have to purchase a puppy.
07:04 We can help also foster puppies.
07:06 But this weekend is puppy adoption weekend, which is very important.
07:10 So let's talk about, first of all, this little guy right here.
07:13 Who's this?
07:14 This is Bacon, and he just came out of foster and is going to be up for adoption this weekend.
07:19 Oh, you just said Bacon.
07:21 Oh, my goodness, because I have a Ralphie and a Biscuit, and I could use a Bacon.
07:25 That's a perfect match, right?
07:27 This is so awesome.
07:28 And, of course, we talked about adopting this weekend, which is getting perfect.
07:32 And there's a lot of different puppies you have out there for different people.
07:34 Yes, so we have a variety of puppies up for adoption at both of our locations.
07:38 So we have a location at 40th Street in Washington.
07:40 That's our main shelter.
07:41 And then we also have a location at the Chandler Fashion Center.
07:44 And we have plenty of puppies at both locations looking for their forever homes.
07:48 I love this.
07:49 And the important thing is to check with everybody at the house.
07:52 Just don't go right now and surprise people.
07:53 And that's one thing the animal welfare wants people to make sure they understand.
07:57 This is going to be a family member.
07:59 Yes, so puppies are a huge commitment.
08:00 And you know what?
08:01 If you love puppies and less puppy love, become a foster, right?
08:04 Decide if it's the right time for you to add a permanent family member to your home.
08:09 Try fostering, only two-week minimum.
08:12 And, yes.
08:13 It's great.
08:14 Okay, so what happens on this weekend?
08:17 What happens this weekend to go get the puppies?
08:19 So as it's National Puppy Day, we just want to spread awareness that we're always looking for puppy fosters.
08:25 And then we have puppies and adult dogs up for adoption.
08:29 We don't require appointments to come down to adopt.
08:32 You can meet with an adoption counselor.
08:34 You can walk our kennels, walk our space at the Chandler Fashion Center,
08:37 and see if there's a right animal to bring home to your family.
08:40 Now, are the puppies all been there shots and everything like that?
08:43 So they are puppies that can actually go home, right?
08:45 Yes, so all our puppies that are up for adoption and adult dogs are up to date on their vaccines.
08:50 They're spay and neutered.
08:51 They're microchipped.
08:52 And also when you adopt from AAWL, you have access to our behavior hotline
08:56 and an adoption support coordinator who will follow up with you the months leading up after adoption
09:00 to check in, make sure everything's settling in well,
09:03 and make sure that your new pets go seamless into your new home.
09:07 Yeah, I love this.
09:08 So let's also talk about what the Arizona Animal Welfare does throughout the community.
09:13 It's very important, isn't it?
09:14 Yes, so Arizona Animal Welfare Week has been around for over 50 years.
09:18 We've rescued and saved the lives of over 100,000 animals, on average around 4,000 every year.
09:23 Not only do we offer adoptions, but we have a low-cost wellness community clinic
09:28 that pet owners can bring their pets to to receive low-cost wellness exams and vaccines.
09:33 And we also offer dog training to the public as well.
09:36 Oh, my goodness. Look at this.
09:38 How many puppies are we allowed to adopt?
09:42 We suggest starting with one.
09:44 Puppies are a huge commitment, and that's why it's great, too, if you're not sure if you're ready
09:48 for that commitment to try fostering.
09:50 It's a great way to get those puppy love in.
09:52 How big will this one get?
09:54 So he's about 3 pounds right now, so, you know, he's going to be pretty small.
09:57 Is he?
09:58 Yeah.
10:02 How much does it cost to adopt?
10:05 So our adoption fees vary depending on the age of the animal,
10:10 so you can visit our website at awl.org, see what animals we have up for adoption,
10:14 see what their adoption fee is, and where you can meet them.
10:18 Someone might not be there this Saturday.
10:20 Can we talk a little bit here?
10:22 I'm just wondering.
10:24 Bacon, do you want to come home with me?
10:26 He's settling right in.
10:28 Yeah. Oh, my goodness. This is so cute.
10:30 All right. Let everybody know where they can find more information about this weekend,
10:33 and also just in general about the Arizona Animal Club.
10:35 Yeah, so if you want to get involved through fostering, volunteering, or looking to adopt,
10:39 visit awl.org, and you can see all the animals we have up for adoption,
10:44 learn how you can become a foster, or you can make a monetary donation
10:48 or purchase something off our wish list at awl.org.
10:51 All right. How long can you stay?
10:53 Can you stay for a little while?
10:55 Can you?
10:56 I mean, yeah, if you want to cuddle with Bacon.
10:58 Yeah, I do. All right.
11:00 Coming up, find out about a great event happening up in Wickenburg
11:04 when The Daily Mix returns after this.
11:07 [music]
11:17 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored by Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
11:27 The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is a great place to go learn about Southwest culture and history,
11:34 and they're currently prepping for their annual Cowgirl Up event happening this weekend.
11:39 Well, we are so excited to have museum curator Dr. Trisha Loescher here to tell us all about it.
11:44 Welcome, Dr. Trish. How are you?
11:46 Great. Hi. Thank you very much for having me.
11:48 Thank you for being here.
11:49 So, before we get into the event that is happening this weekend,
11:53 I just want to hear a little bit about the museum and who you guys are.
11:56 Yeah, it's a fabulous museum. It's been in Wickenburg. It opened in 1960, so it has quite a long history.
12:04 It was founded in 1960, and it has an affiliated Smithsonian Institution accreditation.
12:11 Yeah.
12:12 It's also accredited by the American Association of Museums,
12:16 and it's really a dynamic museum for adults and children.
12:22 When you go in, you will see a lot of Western art by the Cowboy Artists of America,
12:27 some of the big names, Charles Russell, Frederick Remington.
12:31 We have a very important collection of paintings and bronzes.
12:35 And then when you go downstairs, there's an actual recreated period Victorian town that is a lot of fun.
12:43 Oh, no way! That is so cool!
12:45 Wow, I'll bet that is the highlight of the museum, getting to kind of step back in time, if you will,
12:51 and experience it as we imagine it to be. That's really, really cool.
12:55 So, "caballeros" obviously means "cowboys," so this is all about cowboys,
13:00 but the event that you have coming up is all about cowgirls.
13:04 So, tell me a little bit about the event coming up this weekend.
13:07 Yes, this event is really unusual. It's one of a kind in the United States as far as really promoting women artists.
13:15 For 19 years, we've been doing this, and next year will be our 20th year.
13:20 That's exciting.
13:21 It is very exciting. We have 64 women artists from as far away as Wisconsin and Virginia,
13:28 all the way to California, of course, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado.
13:33 They have bronzes and paintings. We have a whole category of miniatures,
13:40 so if you want a smaller painting, there are lots of beautiful miniatures available,
13:44 and we have what we call our "main sale" pieces, which are much larger paintings and bronzes.
13:49 We also have mini bronzes, too.
13:51 So, this is a great event to come out if you are looking for a super unique Southwest piece for your home.
13:59 This is a great time to come, ready to shop, ready to go look at some really unique, incredible paintings.
14:05 And I just really quickly want to ask about some of the more kind of faraway artists,
14:10 because I wonder, the artists who come from, like, Wisconsin, you were saying, or Virginia,
14:15 is their culture wildly different from the Southwest kind of cowboy, cowgirl kind of world?
14:23 I mean, what do those paintings look like?
14:24 Well, those paintings are all Western.
14:26 You know, a lot of the artists, even though they may be from further away,
14:29 they are influenced by the American West, or they'll come out and they'll stay
14:33 and have periods of time where they're painting.
14:35 And it's really a camaraderie, too, I should point out, with all of the artists.
14:40 So, it's a collaboration, you know, they support each other, you know,
14:44 outside of this annual event for the three-day weekend.
14:48 It's really a wonderful group in that they really are together and supportive of each other.
14:55 That's great. I love that.
14:56 And all of the artwork, you know, is Western, you know, cowboys and many, you know,
15:02 different kinds of ranching scenes.
15:04 But there's also a lot of bronzes and kind of even contemporary pieces and more abstract.
15:12 So, a lot of variety.
15:13 A lot of variety.
15:14 What about the proceeds? I want to know about that.
15:16 What about the proceeds from the paintings?
15:18 Well, yeah, that's a great question.
15:20 The proceeds also go to the artists as well as the museum,
15:23 and they help to fund our educational mission and our exhibitions at the museum.
15:28 So, it's really a wonderful way to support the artists as well as our non-profit.
15:34 And then, Miss Rodeo is this weekend as well.
15:37 She's going to be there.
15:38 That's true.
15:39 Miss America Rodeo, Emma Cameron, and she will be there on Sunday.
15:44 And we have a wonderful event.
15:46 It's called a Quick Draw, and the artists set up outside the museum,
15:50 and they paint, and one artist will be sculpting.
15:52 And then they auction those off at 11 o'clock,
15:55 and it's really remarkable to see what the artists can do in about an hour and a half.
16:00 Oh, wow.
16:01 It's super dynamic.
16:02 I love that it's Quick Draw.
16:04 It's kind of literal.
16:05 That's great.
16:06 But, Dr. Trish, tell everybody where they can find more information about the event.
16:10 Yes, please visit our website at westernmuseum.org.
16:14 Great.
16:15 All right, this sounds like a blast.
16:16 Cowgirl up.
16:17 I'm excited to learn more.
16:19 All right, thanks, Dr. Trish.
16:20 Thank you.
16:21 Hey, stick around, guys, because we have more of The Mix coming up after this.
16:23 [music]
16:28 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored by Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
16:33 [music]
16:44 The Mesa Chamber is making sure our men and women firefighters
16:47 who have lost their lives serving the community are remembered.
16:50 Joining me today to tell us how you can help is Sally Harrison,
16:53 President and CEO of the Mesa Chamber, and Scott Fittigins,
16:56 President of the United Mesa Firefighters Local 2260.
17:00 So, good morning to you.
17:01 How are you doing?
17:02 Good morning.
17:03 We're good.
17:04 Thank you.
17:05 I love this.
17:06 This is a very important memorial that I'm surprised we don't have one already in Mesa.
17:08 That should be done.
17:09 And so, Sally, let's talk about, again, how important our firefighters are to the community
17:13 throughout all of Arizona, but in Mesa area.
17:16 Well, the Chamber has been really involved in both public safety with police and fire
17:23 for a very long time.
17:24 And so, when this opportunity came up, it just made sense for us to get involved.
17:28 Yeah.
17:29 And it's a memorial.
17:30 It is.
17:31 Actually, a place has been picked out.
17:32 Yes.
17:33 But the funding is needed, and that's very important.
17:34 Right, right.
17:35 So, obviously, the Chamber has a lot of members, and we have a lot of people in our community,
17:41 and we decided that it made sense for us to do some outreach in partnership with Mesa Fire.
17:47 Yeah.
17:48 And what's also important is that even if you don't live in Mesa and you want to support
17:51 the firefighters, you can be a part of this.
17:53 Yes, it's a big family.
17:54 Yeah, it is.
17:55 Yeah.
17:56 Scott, let's talk about this memorial and how important it is to remember those who
18:00 have served our community in different ways and have lost their lives serving our community.
18:04 And, again, having this memorial is going to be a fantastic way, an important way for
18:09 families to see how important their loved ones were.
18:12 Yeah, for sure.
18:13 So, Mesa just celebrated, Mesa Fire Medical just celebrated 125 years, and so with that
18:19 125 years, you know, the first 60 or so, we didn't see any loss of life, right?
18:25 LODDs is what we call it.
18:27 But we've, unfortunately, since 1940, we've experienced 10.
18:31 Wow.
18:32 And so we have 10 individuals that we will be putting on this memorial and allowing family,
18:37 friends, the community to come together and pay tribute to those that serve the community
18:42 and put service before self.
18:43 That's so important.
18:44 Let's talk about the memorial and what it's going to look like.
18:46 Are there going to be bricks for people to purchase, to put their names on?
18:50 Yes.
18:51 Yeah, so the bricks start at $150, and you can actually go to the Chamber's website,
18:55 and there's a little search tab there.
18:57 If you just put in "memorial," the second, I guess, box.
19:02 A page will pop up.
19:03 Yeah, a second page will pop up.
19:04 You can click on that, and it has all the information there.
19:06 And again, this is a great way for businesses to get involved, to show their support to
19:10 the firefighter families, and also for individuals that want to name somebody.
19:15 Yeah, who doesn't love a firefighter, right?
19:17 It's a wonderful way to memorialize and to show tribute to the families that are left behind.
19:25 All right, and where will the memorial be located?
19:27 So the memorial is just behind Fire Station 201 in Mesa, so that's Mesa Drive and 1st Street.
19:33 So if you just go to the north of that, there's a little park.
19:35 We haven't renamed it yet, but it looks like one of the names that catches everybody's eye is
19:40 Firefighter Memorial Park or just Memorial Park.
19:43 Oh, that's nice. I like that.
19:44 And the thing is that this needs to go now.
19:46 We want to start getting it out there, so we want people to start getting involved and helping out.
19:50 But of course, we know even after some of the bricks are laid, and a lot of bricks will be laid,
19:56 it still goes on to help our firefighters, doesn't it?
19:58 Absolutely.
19:59 So very important to get the memorial going and stuff like that.
20:02 Okay, so again, how can people find out more about it?
20:05 MesaChamber.org is our website.
20:08 There's bricks for sale, but there's also challenge coins and some benches.
20:13 Yes.
20:14 Oh, nice. So it's going to be a whole development going in there.
20:16 Right.
20:17 Sponsor a bench.
20:18 Yeah, a lot of the benches. How many benches are we looking at, do you know?
20:21 Have you decided yet?
20:22 I believe we have three.
20:23 Three?
20:24 Three benches that come around basically the enclosure that you would be looking at all the plaques.
20:29 And this is going to be open to the public to go visit too when it's done?
20:31 Absolutely, yes.
20:32 This is so important. Well, thank you for coming in.
20:34 And of course, this is such an important memorial to have done.
20:37 So information is over on, of course, the screen, and you can head over to azdailymix.com to find out more.
20:44 So thank you.
20:45 Thank you.
20:46 All right, stick around. We have more of The Mix after this here on the CW7.
20:50 [music]
21:00 This is the Arizona Daily Mix.
21:03 [music]
21:13 Here we go. Again, if you were not here with us, we have dogs in the house thanks to the Arizona Welfare League.
21:21 This weekend is Puppy Adoption Day, so you go to the website.
21:24 This is Tomato.
21:25 This is Bacon.
21:27 Josh, can we have him?
21:29 Really?
21:30 Josh, are you watching? Can we take him home?
21:32 So, look at this, Tomato.
21:34 Look at this.
21:35 Oh, okay.
21:37 You know what? Let's just leave this for the show.
21:39 The rest of the day, we can do this stuff, all right?
21:41 Should we even get to the second half?
21:42 No, no one cares. Let's just hang out with the pups.
21:44 Okay, go for it.
21:45 Look at him. I think he's tired.
21:47 Oh, he's just, no, no.
21:49 He's just too ready to go home.
21:51 All right, I'll take him.
21:52 Welcome to the second half of the Arizona Daily Mix.
21:54 Still to come, if you're looking to head up north this weekend, we have some great events for you to check out and for us to get in.
22:00 Absolutely. Plus, getting a colonoscopy is so important, especially as you start to get older.
22:05 And Dignity Health is here to talk about how fast and easy that checkup can be.
22:09 Yes, and also tomorrow, we're going to be out at the Westgate for the big Guardian Games.
22:15 Yes, we will.
22:16 Because we want you to join CW7 Arizona, Saracen Ford, and Arizona law enforcement for the 2024 Guardian Games benefit in Special Olympics of Arizona.
22:23 And this Friday, it will be at Westgate Entertainment District.
22:26 We have so much fun being a part of this in our community event.
22:29 And we're sure you will, too.
22:31 Join us and our caring partners like Saracen Ford, Mattamy Holmes, and Gerber Injury Law.
22:38 We're all part of this.
22:39 And don't forget, if you want to get involved or make a donation, simply head over to aztv.com.
22:45 So there you go.
22:46 Which side are we going on?
22:47 I don't know.
22:48 I'm over here.
22:49 Here we go.
22:50 You're with Tommy.
22:51 I'm Tommy.
22:52 All right.
22:53 So there we go.
22:54 All right.
22:55 We got dogs.
22:56 We got Pokey.
22:57 We got it all today, guys.
22:58 But the Arizona Pokey Wars are back, and they're happening this weekend.
22:59 Last year, we had our very own Daily Mix competition with Chef Tommy and Chef Blaze.
23:04 And now we're back for a rematch.
23:06 Welcome, both of you.
23:08 How are you doing?
23:09 Look at this.
23:10 Thank you for having us.
23:11 I like this.
23:12 Thanks for being back, guys.
23:13 All right.
23:14 So let's talk about the Pokey Wars.
23:15 An important part, what is a Pokey?
23:16 Pokey is, I always explain it as like a fish salad.
23:21 But it's not, it doesn't just have to be fish.
23:24 I do vegetables.
23:25 I've actually made some with some chicken in it.
23:28 You can do crab, shrimp.
23:30 It's so versatile.
23:31 And when it comes to the culinary arts, there's no right and wrong.
23:34 So I hope you enjoy.
23:35 I love it.
23:36 Okay, so I want to know what the Pokey Wars actually are.
23:39 I mean, Chef Tommy, tell us, because I wasn't here last year.
23:42 Yes.
23:43 What are the Pokey Wars?
23:44 So there's so much going on.
23:45 We have live music, live entertainment, all Hawaiian-inspired.
23:48 Nice.
23:49 You can get a Pokey passport.
23:50 It's actually free admission to the Pokey Wars.
23:52 So you just buy a passport, you can come in.
23:55 We've got 10 different trucks in restaurants with different samples.
24:00 You get to try some of the best Pokey around Arizona.
24:03 Oh, man, that's amazing.
24:05 Plus, it's a culinary competition.
24:08 So we'll have a traditional round and a freestyle round,
24:11 and these professional chefs will be competing.
24:14 Chef Tommy, that's a chop champion there,
24:16 will be one of the judges that will be judging these competition chefs.
24:20 I'd like to hear this through that ear, "He's a chop champion."
24:22 Yeah, he's a chop champion.
24:24 You know, that's really cool.
24:25 Well, we're going to have our own little war right now.
24:27 Yeah, we are.
24:28 So this is what we're going to do.
24:29 We are going to both prepare a Pokey plate,
24:33 because Pokey Bowl and there's Pokey plates, right?
24:36 Yeah.
24:37 Oh, okay, I didn't know there was a difference.
24:38 There's Pokey sushi, and then there's Pokey rolls.
24:40 It means all kinds of different stuff.
24:42 Basically, yeah, that's all there is.
24:44 All right, great.
24:45 All right, are we starting?
24:46 We are.
24:47 So who wants to go first?
24:48 You want to go first with what we're putting in, or what do you want to go?
24:50 Yeah, let's start over here.
24:51 All right, and chefs, start.
24:53 All right.
24:54 So we'll do a little bit of Pokey sauce here.
24:55 So why don't we start with you?
24:56 Mine's a little untraditional.
24:57 Oh, we're doing untraditional over here, guys.
24:59 Okay.
25:00 So we have a little Pokey sauce.
25:01 In the Hawaiian culture, that's called Lomi.
25:03 So you roast the sweet corn.
25:04 It helps to bring that in.
25:05 Let's get some onions in there.
25:06 Sweet corn.
25:07 Okay.
25:08 We've got onions going in ours.
25:09 So kind of bring some of that southwest flavor.
25:10 We've got onions going in there.
25:11 We have onions in ours, too.
25:12 Okay.
25:13 Don't think you're special.
25:14 So ours, lots of sweet onions.
25:15 So we just kind of marinate it for a little bit.
25:17 Okay, mix it all up.
25:18 Mix it up.
25:19 We're going to like it.
25:20 So we've got there, okay, shishimi.
25:21 This is all shishimi.
25:22 Shishimi.
25:23 And then we've got some sweet corn.
25:24 Sweet corn.
25:25 Sweet corn.
25:26 Okay, here we go.
25:27 Okay.
25:28 And we're just kind of piling it on.
25:29 So is this considered a Pokey plate?
25:30 Yes, this would be.
25:31 Pokey plate.
25:32 Okay, I love it.
25:33 I love it.
25:34 And then we're just going to garnish it.
25:35 You know, eat with your eyes first.
25:36 We want to make it look super appealing.
25:37 Super.
25:38 Eat with your eyes first, right?
25:39 Look at that.
25:40 I'm used to going fast, right?
25:41 All right.
25:42 And then we have some sriracha aioli.
25:43 Yeah, throw some crab in there.
25:44 That's it.
25:45 Just a little more crab.
25:46 And Chef Tommy, you are known for your aioli because obviously, aioli burgers.
25:47 Yes.
25:48 That's right.
25:49 Yeah.
25:50 Okay, love it.
25:51 Yeah, so I try to incorporate an aioli into everything that I do.
25:52 Heck yeah.
25:53 What about this over here?
25:54 Yeah, so yeah, these are for you to garnish.
25:55 So we have tempura flakes.
25:56 So this is ours over here, guys.
25:57 So this is what Chef Tommy's done so far with that aioli there on the side.
25:58 So this is tempura flakes.
25:59 Yeah, tempura flakes is right on the top there.
26:00 Beautiful.
26:01 We have some togarashi.
26:02 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:03 Sweet corn.
26:04 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:05 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:06 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:07 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:08 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:09 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:10 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:11 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:12 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:13 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:14 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:15 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:16 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:17 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:18 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:19 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:20 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:21 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:22 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:23 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:24 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:25 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:26 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:27 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:28 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:29 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:30 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:31 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:33 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:34 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:35 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:36 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:37 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:38 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:39 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:40 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:41 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:42 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:43 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:44 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:45 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:46 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:47 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:48 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:49 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:50 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:51 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:52 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:53 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:54 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:56 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:57 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:58 And then we have some sweet corn.
26:59 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:00 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:01 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:02 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:03 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:04 And then we have some sweet corn.

27:38 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:39 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:40 And then we have some sweet corn.
27:42 Alright, did we go through your
27:43 menus already?
27:44 This is what we're talking about right here.
27:45 This is a poke bowl.
27:46 That's a Hawaiian poke bowl right there.
27:48 What do we got there?
27:49 We've got some avocado, some sweet onion,
27:51 a little bit of seaweed, wasabi peas on top,
27:54 some furikake, and inamona,
27:56 which is very important in the Hawaiian culture.
27:58 It's a kukui nut, roasted kukui nut.
28:00 Oh, so we are all Hawaiian over here, huh?
28:03 Yes, we are.
28:04 Not like Chef Tommy, who wants to throw up.
28:06 I'm going for the blue wing.
28:08 I'm going for the last kukui.
28:10 I'm going for the milk shake.
28:11 You can have the milk shake with this.
28:14 This will go with anything, guys.
28:16 That's what we love about it.
28:17 Tell us again, Poke Wars, when, where, how?
28:20 It's going to be at Scottsdale Resort
28:22 at McCormick Ranch from 11 to 5.
28:24 Free admission.
28:26 We'll have a kids zone, bring the family.
28:28 It'll be a lot of fun.
28:29 What else we got there?
28:31 It's this Saturday, the 23rd.
28:33 It's coming right up.
28:34 And the whole point is that people get to come
28:35 and eat poke, right?
28:36 Exactly.
28:37 And just enjoy the weather, the family,
28:39 the music.
28:40 It's a great Hawaiian.
28:41 I mean, Chef Blake does an incredible job,
28:43 really brings Hawaii home.
28:44 There it is.
28:45 All right, I love this.
28:46 This looks great.
28:47 All right, guys, well, stick around,
28:48 because we have more of the mix after this,
28:50 and I'm going to eat this poke.
28:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
28:54 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix
29:06 is sponsored by Dignity Health.
29:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
29:11 March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month,
29:14 and colon cancer is the second leading cause
29:16 of cancer-related death in the United States.
29:18 But it doesn't have to be.
29:19 I'm joined by Dr. Ocwonkwo of Dignity Health
29:22 to talk about the importance of colon screening.
29:25 How are you doing, doctor?
29:26 I'm great, thank you.
29:27 All right, let's talk.
29:28 This is something that, again, a lot of people avoid doing,
29:32 a lot of people should be doing.
29:34 And we're finding out younger ages should be doing this.
29:37 But it is, of course, a colon screening.
29:40 I have no problem saying that I had one.
29:42 And it's not like the old days that I hear about.
29:45 It's much more easier and safer for people to do.
29:48 Am I right?
29:49 Yeah, it's definitely easier and safer.
29:51 We have better preps now, which is a big reason why a lot
29:54 of people do not want to have a colonoscopy.
29:56 So we have better preps that are tolerated very well,
29:58 really great anesthesia to make the procedure very
30:01 comfortable for patients.
30:02 And it's relatively quick, only 20, 30 minutes.
30:04 Yeah, and it's not like we see in the movies or on TV.
30:07 You're not awake.
30:08 I was put under very easily.
30:10 Didn't even know it got done.
30:11 Yeah, yeah.
30:12 So you're not awake.
30:13 You're completely asleep.
30:15 You have moderate sedation.
30:16 So you're not on a breathing machine either,
30:18 which makes the procedure a low-risk procedure.
30:20 You don't feel anything during the procedure.
30:22 All of my patients tell me the last thing I remember is going
30:25 into the room.
30:26 So you'll be completely comfortable.
30:27 Yeah.
30:28 Another thing, too, is that you talk about the prepping for it.
30:31 I think people have to understand the prepping is very easy.
30:33 It's not like you're starving yourself to death or anything like that.
30:37 And the reason why the prep is important is because that's how
30:40 you can make sure you're getting the right screening for the person.
30:43 Exactly.
30:44 So we want to have a very good prep so that we can evaluate
30:46 the entire colon.
30:48 Polyps can be very small, so we want to make sure that there's
30:51 no stool or anything that's going to obscure the view.
30:54 Yeah.
30:55 Okay, let's talk about the ages because this is very important
30:58 because as we all think of colon cancer, we think of older people.
31:03 We think that, okay, you may have to wait until I'm 55, 65 to get checked out.
31:06 Not necessarily now, right?
31:08 No, not necessarily.
31:09 So the colon cancer screening age starts at 45, and that's reflecting
31:13 an increase in the incidence in young patients.
31:15 So it used to be 50 years old, but we are seeing colon cancer
31:18 in younger and younger patients, and they're actually having worse outcomes.
31:22 And that's kind of crazy we're seeing those numbers in younger people.
31:25 Do you think it's just because of the way that we've pretty much
31:28 have been working at home and doing different things that helps us--
31:32 I mean, it's not helping us in getting us to these screenings sooner?
31:36 Well, definitely, especially during COVID.
31:39 That was a time where a lot of people lost track of their screening.
31:42 In addition to that, an inactive lifestyle is considered a risk factor
31:45 for colon cancer.
31:47 All right, and what's the fast-track colon--
31:52 colon scope we were talking about?
31:54 So we have a direct colonoscopy program where patients can call directly,
31:57 and they can be scheduled for the procedure.
31:59 So they can be scheduled without having to do an additional appointment
32:01 with the physician.
32:03 It's kind of interesting.
32:04 I'm a little nervous talking to you, Doctor, because people do get nervous
32:06 having this conversation, but it needs to be done because, again,
32:10 this is one way of preventing having colon cancer,
32:13 but also to help people find it sooner if it does happen, right?
32:16 Yes, exactly.
32:17 So one of the best parts of the colonoscopy is that it actually helps
32:20 to prevent colon cancer in that it identifies polyps that are small growths
32:25 that can turn into colon cancer over time.
32:27 Okay.
32:28 I've had mine.
32:29 I actually think I've had it a couple years ago.
32:31 So when do I need to go back for one?
32:33 So that depends.
32:35 It depends on what your colonoscopy results were
32:38 and what your family history were.
32:40 So for patients who have a normal colonoscopy with no family history,
32:43 they have their next colonoscopy at 10 years.
32:46 For patients with polyps, depending on the number of polyps,
32:49 that will be somewhere between the 3 to 5 years.
32:52 For patients with a family history, we typically do every 5 years,
32:55 unless, of course, they have polyps.
32:57 I love, too, that you worked with me because I have different medication,
33:00 and that's one thing.
33:01 You do work with people when they go get these done,
33:03 and that's why I'm saying you've got to go get checked out
33:05 because they need to know health is there for you.
33:07 Absolutely.
33:08 And, again, let's talk about the fast screen because that's something
33:11 that we really want people to understand.
33:12 You don't need an appointment for that again, right?
33:14 Yeah, you don't need an appointment.
33:15 You can call directly, and they will schedule you for the procedure.
33:19 Very easy to do.
33:20 Both men and women need to go get it done.
33:22 Like I said, I had it done a couple years ago.
33:24 No problem.
33:25 I'm pretty much okay.
33:27 I hope so.
33:28 Yes, I am, and that's important.
33:30 Doctor, thank you very much for joining us.

34:47 We have so many traditions at home, but I think most of my favorite have to do
34:51 with food, and during springtime, and now that we're getting close to Easter,
34:56 I think that I think about sweets the most.
35:00 I would say tres leches cakes, but mostly a chocolate marble pound cake
35:05 that my mom used to make for me, that her mom used to make for her,
35:09 and that now I make for my boys.
35:11 So, I love passing down that chocolatey tradition.

35:20 But you are a chef, and so I want to know, as someone who's maybe not quite
35:26 the same level of chef that you are, what are the staples you have in your kitchen?
35:31 That's a great question.
35:33 You know, my pantry is really like my treasure trove.
35:36 There are some ingredients I just can't do without, and starting from the most
35:41 important essential things, oils, vinegars, rice, beans, a few canned items
35:47 like pickled jalapenos or chipotle sin adobo sauce that we use in so many ways
35:54 here at home.
35:56 At the top of my list, I have Eggland's best eggs.
35:59 They are so versatile, and they have so many more nutrients than ordinary eggs,
36:05 and they just make everything that I use them for better.
36:09 If it's a frittata, it makes it fluffier.
36:11 If it's a cake, it makes it richer.
36:13 If it's meatballs or albondigas, it makes them more pillowy.
36:18 Alongside my Eggland's best eggs, I have fresh tomatoes always,
36:23 ripe avocados absolutely, fresh and dried chiles, and spices like cumin and oregano.
36:31 A lot of oregano.
36:33 That's such a great point to have those spices there, things like the oils,

36:46 So keeping those in your fridge, keeping them fresh is super, super important.
36:50 What I want to know are what are those dishes that you have out there?
36:54 Tell me some of those recipes.
36:57 Of course, I have a Mexican frittata that has fire-roasted poblanos,
37:01 potatoes, and salty queso fresco.
37:04 And this is a great recipe to make for friends when you're hosting because
37:08 you cook it and serve it in the same pan.
37:11 So it's very low-maintenance.
37:13 You can serve it hot or lukewarm with a side salad, some crusty bread,
37:17 and you're set.
37:18 And then here for sweets, I have an almond tres leches cake, which is rich.
37:24 It's nutty.
37:25 It has a tangy layer of apricot jam right in the middle with some
37:29 crunchy almonds, too.
37:31 And these two recipes that speak to my Mexican heritage, the Latin culture
37:36 that I love so much, contain egg-lanced-baked eggs, which have six times more
37:42 vitamin D, ten times more vitamin E, and 25% less saturated fat than
37:49 ordinary eggs.
