00:00 Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor for Sussex Newspapers. Lovely
00:06 to speak again to Joelle Puttino, who is a Hastings-based musician. And Joelle, you've
00:12 got your fourth single out. Now, you call yourself the musical sloth, however you pronounce
00:18 it because you don't work particularly fast, but that's because it matters to you, isn't
00:23 it?
00:24 That's right, yes. Sometimes, especially when you're collaborating, you don't know how long
00:28 things are going to take and sometimes you're waiting around for people to be available.
00:32 So, yeah, you've got to be patient sometimes.
00:36 And the latest single, single number four, is called Bones. And you were saying it's
00:40 a really optimistic song, isn't it, about moving on from a dark passage, dark area of
00:46 your life. Tell me, what's happening in the song?
00:50 It's about finding your purpose again and that glimmer of hope and light inside yourself
00:55 after a dark time. I know everybody goes through some challenging times in their life at some
01:02 point or other. This is about realigning yourself and finding your purpose again.
01:07 And as you're suggesting, it's because in a dark time you lose a sense of self, don't
01:12 you? And that's what this is about, refinding. What do you mean by a sense of self?
01:17 So I think when something catastrophic in life happens or something traumatic, you question
01:24 everything in the world and you find it hard to piece everything together with your place
01:29 in the world, the meaning of things, you kind of question everything. This is about seeing
01:37 things that remind you that you are connected to something far greater than what you thought,
01:44 you know, in that dark place.
01:45 And that's the hope, that's the optimism in the song then?
01:49 Yes, yeah.
01:50 And you're thinking about, well, you're moving towards gigging in the summer, all being well.
01:55 Yes. So we're in the studio rehearsing and I've got an amazing guitarist, Ben Butterfield,
02:02 and yeah, we're going to be doing a couple of gigs hopefully in the summer.
02:06 Yeah, so actually being out there on the stage performing is important, isn't it?
02:11 Oh, absolutely. Yes, it's to connect with the audience and to gain confidence. And also
02:18 the songs take on a physical form as well.
02:24 Fantastic. Well, good luck with everything. Lovely to see you. Lovely to speak to you.
02:29 Thank you.
02:30 Thank you, Phil. Thank you. Bye.
