16:23 November 6th,
16:24 the date when our king,
16:26 Gustav II Adolf,
16:28 was killed in a battle
16:29 in German Lützen in 1632.
16:32 Or November 30th,
16:34 when King Karl XII
16:36 died in another battle
16:37 in 1718.
16:40 Choosing one of those days
16:41 would at least
16:42 have been very Swedish
16:43 as we are obsessed
16:44 with commemorating failures.
16:48 Apart from only remembering
16:50 when and how
16:51 our kings got killed,
16:53 we have our biggest military failure
16:55 on display in a museum.
16:57 The battleship Vasa
16:59 sank 15 minutes
17:01 on its maiden voyage
17:03 in 1628,
17:05 and 333 years later
17:07 we made the effort
17:08 to recover the damn thing,
17:09 so now everybody can watch
17:11 in amazement
17:12 how poorly constructed it was.
17:14 Our most cherished sports moments
17:18 are when we lost
17:20 the soccer World Cup Final
17:21 against Brazil in 1958.
17:25 And we're still torturing us
17:27 with the team song
17:28 from 1994
17:29 when we're digging gold
17:31 in USA,
17:32 though everyone knows
17:34 we only took the bronze.
17:36 (singing in Swedish)
17:40 We're just not good
17:42 at bragging
17:43 and not used to being
17:44 neither patriots
17:45 or nationalists.
17:47 Most of us feel awkward
17:49 waving with a Swedish flag,
17:51 but June 6th
17:52 at least nothing bad happened.
17:55 We're still trying
17:56 to figure out what to do
17:57 and are happy
17:58 for any advice.
18:00 But OK,
18:01 this year Sweden
18:02 turns 500 years,
18:04 so let's party
18:05 like it's 1523.
18:09 Yeah, that was that.
18:11 Tell me,
18:12 you were at Skansen,
18:13 the hot spot
18:14 for national celebration
18:15 in Sweden.
18:17 Was it wild?
18:18 (laughter)
18:20 It was really
18:21 kind of boring.
18:23 It was underwhelming.
18:24 OK.
18:25 Incredibly,
18:26 like if we had a parade
18:28 in the nation's capital
18:29 on the 4th of July,
18:30 you'd be 30 people deep
18:32 that entire stretch of road.
18:34 But you celebrate a lot.
18:35 Oh yeah.
18:36 It's a special day for you.
18:37 Very special.
18:38 And what about waving the flag?
18:39 You don't feel awkward?
18:40 No, everyone does.
18:41 We wear the flag,
18:42 we wave the flag,
18:43 we hang it all over our house,
18:44 we have it everywhere,
18:46 we make our food
18:47 look like the flag.
18:48 We dress our children
18:50 in the flag.
18:51 I mean,
18:52 our national anthem
18:53 talks about the bombs
18:54 bursting in the air, right?
18:55 We have fireworks,
18:56 it's loud, it's big.
18:58 We're definitely very proud
18:59 of our independence.
19:00 I think we kind of
19:01 scared him.
19:02 We were yelling so loud.
19:03 We scared the king.
19:04 You saw the king.
19:05 We did.
19:06 We yelled at him
19:07 and waved at him
19:08 and he was like...
19:09 He was like,
19:10 "Who are those guys?"
19:11 He was like,
19:12 "What are these guys doing?"
19:13 Yeah.
19:14 The day before,
19:15 I met several Swedes
19:16 and I was like,
19:17 "So are you excited
19:18 about tomorrow?
19:19 It's going to be
19:20 a 500-year anniversary
19:21 of Gustav Vasa being a king
19:22 and Sweden becoming
19:23 independent again."
19:24 And literally,
19:25 most of them said,
19:26 "Huh?"
19:27 They just didn't even know
19:28 it was 500 years.
19:29 But I will say,
19:30 that's what surprised me
19:31 is that this national day
19:32 is only 40 years old.
19:34 Like, 40, right?
19:36 Yeah, that's really young.
19:37 We've been celebrating
19:38 the 4th of July,
19:39 since its conception.
19:40 This is like,
19:41 younger than my dad.
19:43 Like,
19:44 no wonder people
19:45 don't really know
19:46 what to do.
19:47 Not only is it very young,
19:48 but it's confusing
19:50 because they're celebrating
19:51 multiple kinds of things.
19:53 And particularly,
19:54 there's another major holiday
19:55 that Swedes celebrate
19:56 in a couple of weeks.
19:57 Like, everybody's excited
19:58 for Midsummer.
19:59 It's like,
20:00 if you have a birthday
20:01 near, like, Christmas,
20:02 people always forget
20:03 about your birthday.
20:04 The closest thing
20:05 that I've seen
20:06 is with Christmas,
20:08 is with sporting events.
20:10 Swedes go crazy
20:12 in a football stadium.
20:14 And there's a similarity
20:15 when it comes to
20:16 celebrating your nation's pride.
20:18 Like in America,
20:19 when we celebrate
20:20 the 4th of July,
20:21 it's very similar
20:22 to going to, like,
20:23 a basketball game.
20:24 And Swedes,
20:25 if they could just
20:26 take that sporting pride
20:27 into the country's pride,
20:28 it would be...
20:29 Are they drinking
20:30 at the sporting events, though?
20:31 That might be part of it.
20:32 It might be.
20:33 But I think the other thing
20:34 is if you live somewhere,
20:35 you kind of take things
20:36 for granted that are good.
20:38 And, you know,
20:39 something that means a lot
20:40 to me is health care.
20:41 And, you know,
20:42 in Sweden,
20:43 you have this amazing
20:44 health care system
20:45 that supports so many people.
20:46 And in the States,
20:47 you just don't have that.
20:48 You know, people are dying
20:49 or going into debt
20:50 because they don't
20:51 have that support.
20:52 And so I think
20:53 maybe if Swedes
20:54 had that experience
20:55 and then they came back here,
20:56 they'd realize
20:57 how special that is
20:58 to have that support.
20:59 I really think
21:00 there's so much
21:01 to celebrate in Sweden--
21:02 the health care system,
21:03 the social welfare system,
21:04 the schooling system,
21:05 as well as just, like,
21:06 it's such a beautiful,
21:07 beautiful country.
21:08 You know, I'm really proud
21:09 to have Swedish heritage,
21:10 and I'm really grateful
21:11 to get to be here.
21:12 So I really do think
21:13 there's a lot to celebrate.
21:14 Thank you so much.
21:15 Now we know
21:16 next 6th of June
21:17 will be totally different.
21:18 All right.
21:19 Yeah, I'll be waving like crazy
21:20 with my Swedish flag
21:21 and say,
21:22 "Go, Underskottet Skulle, go!"
21:24 (laughter)
21:25 Yeah.
21:26 Thank you, Anders.
21:27 Thank you.
21:28 I got another surprise
