00:10 Get Over It is a teen comedy from 2001 that's loosely based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer
00:16 Night's Dream. So this was chosen by one of our guests, film and TV critic and BBC
00:20 Six music regular, Rihanna Dillon. So the film follows a high school senior who's trying
00:25 to win back his ex-girlfriend by joining the school play, which is A Midsummer Night's
00:30 Rockin' Eve. So Josh, tell us, why did Rihanna pick this one?
00:33 She thought that this was essentially, wasn't spoken about in the same breath as Things
00:38 Like Ten Things I Hate About You. Ultimately she concluded that she reckons it's underrated
00:43 and underseen. So looking at the critical reception at the time of recording then, on
00:47 IMDb it gets 5.7 out of 10, the audience on Rotten Tomatoes give it 51% and the critics
00:53 on Rotten Tomatoes give it 43%. So overall I thought it was a decent concept, executed
00:57 pretty well. It knows what it is, it's not trying to be anything particularly high brow.
01:01 I thought it was pretty funny in places, it's carried really well by a cast. It's got one
01:05 of those casts that's got like a sort of who's who of everyone who went on to do other things.
01:09 So obviously you've got like a pre-Spider-Man Kirsten Dunst, you've got Ben Foster, you've
01:14 got Mila Kunis, Colin Hanks, Sisko, before he released the Thong Song, weirdly. It does
01:20 use some other Shakespearean and other theatre techniques and stuff like that to keep you
01:23 engaged. So there's a chorus in it, there's a curtain call ending as well and stuff like
01:28 that. Some great devices where it sort of keeps you visually engaged. What did you like
01:33 about it?
01:34 So I did think it was a lot of fun and it was pretty funny as well. It's all really
01:38 colourful and really vibrant and just quite easy going. And because one of the main plot
01:42 points in this is that they're putting on their own production of this Midsummer Night's
01:46 Rockin' Eve. That is really fun and really upbeat and really high energy. And I love
01:51 some of the set design that's gone into that and some of the songs that have been written
01:55 for that musical as well. The whole sequence at the end where we get to watch some of the
01:59 production is the best part of the film for me. It's really entertaining, it's really
02:03 funny and I probably could have done with a little bit more of it to be honest. The
02:07 biggest issue that I had with this film was that I found I couldn't really connect to
02:11 our protagonist. So that's Ben Foster's character, Burke. He wasn't super likeable
02:16 and I didn't find him that intriguing either. So I don't need my characters, my leading
02:20 characters to be likeable all the time. But because there wasn't too much about him in
02:25 any regard, I just kind of found that I wasn't really rooting for him and I wasn't really
02:29 too bothered on what the outcome of this film was for him. So that was a little bit disappointing.
02:34 It's not, you know, it's not absolutely amazing. If you like She's the Man or something
02:38 that I hate about you, you'll probably get something out of it. I think it's probably
02:41 slightly underrated and underseen as well. What would you say?
02:44 I would say that it is a little bit underrated, but I think it is definitely underseen. I
02:49 was watching films very similar to this at the time that this was released and beyond
02:53 that as well. And this never even came onto my radar. I'd never even heard of it, which
02:58 was a bit of a surprise when Rihanna brought it to us. So in that regard, I would definitely
03:02 suggest that it is underseen.
