An elderly man has died and a woman is in hospital following what police described as a "serious incident" in Perth's northern suburbs.

00:00 I'm here in Perth's northern suburbs in Greenwood where a man in his 80s was allegedly
00:06 stabbed to death on the street behind me.
00:09 Now a woman in her 70s was also injured and she's been rushed to Royal Perth Hospital
00:13 where it's believed she's in a stable condition.
00:16 This morning police put out a public alert urging residents in the area to stay in their
00:20 homes and lock their doors over fears that a man armed with a knife was roaming around
00:25 the suburbs.
00:27 Now just some time ago a man was arrested one suburb over just north of here in the
00:32 suburb of Kingsley.
00:34 We spoke to some residents on that street who witnessed what happened and his arrest.
00:39 Here's a bit of what they had to say.
00:41 I was just doing a bit of gardening at the front.
00:43 I heard someone screaming get on the floor, get on the floor.
00:46 And I came out and I saw just a single officer from the dog squad who had a gentleman pinned
00:52 on the floor.
00:53 It was on the other side of the car so I couldn't see too much until he was loaded up into the
00:56 back of the car and arrested.
01:01 Now police have asked the public to avoid both areas while they secure the scene and
01:05 investigate exactly what happened.
