Sarawak aims to be an exporter of renewable energy, particularly hydrogen, by the end of 2027, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier said the state is working with industry players such as Gentari Sdn Bhd as well as Japanese and Korean investors to explore the potential for developing hydrogen in Sarawak.

He told reporters after opening the Borneo Energy Transition Conference, Kuching on Monday (Feb 26).

00:00 In Sarawak, we believe it can be done.
00:04 That's why the Sarawak government took a bold step
00:09 to produce hydrogen.
00:12 We have a mini plant producing hydrogen.
00:15 Though the cost is high,
00:17 actually people were asking
00:19 why this Abang Joe want to produce hydrogen, it's very costly.
00:23 But sometimes you have to take the risk.
00:25 Nothing is simple.
00:27 You know you have the resources,
00:30 so we take the risk
00:32 by transforming our public transport using fuel cell,
00:39 using hydrogen.
00:41 I think the first in this region using hydrogen for public transport.
00:46 And we take the risk.
00:48 We want to really become a clean energy supplier.
00:56 That is Sarawak's position.
00:58 I'm sure Malaysia is the same.
01:00 So far, we have done our part.
01:03 Ladies and gentlemen, with that we need investment to come in.
01:09 So I'm very happy today we have a certain understanding.
01:16 The SCDC people are talking to me about SEDCE.
01:25 SEDCE, they call it.
01:28 And today marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability.
01:38 And also sustainable transportation and energy solution.
01:44 And there is going to be exchange of documents
01:48 between SCDC CE or SEDCE,
01:52 between Gantari Sendian Berhad
01:55 through its subsidiary Gantari Hydrogen Sendian Berhad.
02:00 Thank you for working together.
02:03 Number two is Hibiscus,
02:07 Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical,
02:11 and Korea National Oil Corporation.
02:15 And the third is of course our own Sarawak Metro.
02:20 I hope this understanding between the players
02:25 will send signal
02:28 that the players as well as the Sarawak government
02:33 is serious in producing clean energy for the world.
02:38 Sarawak would like to become the hub, if possible, together with Gantari.
02:46 So the hydrogen hub aims to be the sole supplier of clean hydrogen
02:51 for any downstream facilities in Sarawak.
02:55 And this hydrogen hub concept,
02:58 in the hydrogen hub is separated
03:01 between upstream, that is hydrogen production, H2O production,
03:07 and downstream, hydrogen derivatives.
03:12 This illustrates that hydrogen hub being able to cater to multiple investors
03:19 with the plug and play concept.
03:23 And PHICDC will set up another plant in Rembus
03:29 where we are going to produce our hydrogen for our public transport.
03:33 With that, I hope you have a good conference
03:36 and I hope to hear the resolution or whatever views that you have expressed
03:45 in this conference so that it can be a new input for us to move forward.
03:51 Let Malaysia, let Asia do things.
03:56 We don't talk, but we do it for the sake of mankind.
04:01 With that, thank you very much and I wish you all the best.
04:04 (Applause)
