00:14 and I'm the Commander of the Fraud and Cyber Crime Squad in New South Wales.
00:18 With advances in electronic communication,
00:21 criminals are developing new methods to contact you.
00:25 Scammers may pretend to be bank employees,
00:28 sports betting agents, telecommunication providers,
00:32 investment representatives or social media providers.
00:35 Contact may be made through traditional mail,
00:39 email or unexpected sales calls.
00:42 Here are some steps we can all take to help protect ourselves from these scammers.
00:48 Be cautious.
00:51 Never send money or give credit card or online account information
00:56 to anyone you don't know and trust.
00:59 Always seek independent financial and/or legal advice
01:04 before making any investment or purchasing decisions.
01:08 Never rely on advice from the person trying to sell you
01:13 a service or investment opportunity.
01:16 Door to door sales or service scams.
01:21 Don't be pressured into signing or paying up front for a proposed service.
01:27 Always research a company or service provider prior to paying or agreeing to a contract
01:34 and always read any contract or service paperwork carefully prior to paying for any work.
01:42 Always check the person's credentials.
01:46 Protect your personal information.
01:49 By never giving your personal or bank account details to people you don't know and trust.
01:56 When in doubt, always contact your bank, financial institution or service provider.
02:03 Don't take things on face value.
02:07 Don't be fooled by an email that looks legitimate or appears to link to a genuine website.
02:13 Don't open suspicious or unsolicited emails.
02:18 Ignore them and block them.
02:21 And always beware of unexpected sales calls and confirm who you are actually talking to.
