Malaysia has recorded almost 10.07mil 5G service subscriptions, representing an adoption rate of 29.9 percent as of Jan 31, said Fahmi Fadzil.

In his speech at the Maxis 5G-Advanced Trial Showcase on Thursday (Feb 22), the Communications Minister called on all mobile network operators must be more sensitive and responsible towards the needs of their users in the future.

Fahmi also said all telecommunication companies in Malaysia will be part of the Malaysian Pavilion at the Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024) to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from Feb 26 to 28, adding that this will mark the first time that the country is participating with the involvement of all telcos under one pavilion.

01:01 So for the benefit of this assignment,
01:06 I just mentioned that after this, many of us
01:09 will de-camp to Barcelona for FWC, Faculty of Barcelona,
01:15 organized by TSMA.
01:16 So there we will be able to witness and look
01:19 at a lot of newer technologies, emerging technologies,
01:23 particularly the field of telecommunications.
01:26 But before we go there, today we already
01:28 served a vision of the future, which is realized today.
01:32 So I'm very happy to be here to see the good collaboration
01:35 between Maxis and Huawei, particularly
01:38 to look at some of these, what we call,
01:42 what is being dubbed as 5G advance,
01:45 and some of the real world applications that
01:48 can happen today.
01:49 For those of you who will be able to go around and see
01:52 some of the not only technology in action,
01:55 but also the equipment that's being used today,
01:58 I'm particularly pleased, surprised, and also delighted
02:04 to see Moore's Law in action, where
02:08 the size of these chips are now really like dots.
02:14 So if you look at some of them over there,
02:16 for some of the passive IoT use, this is really quite impressive.
02:22 And I think some of the advancements that's
02:26 being showcased today, you can really
02:29 see them being adopted, being used,
02:31 being applied in many real world settings.
02:34 So I hope that Maxis uses this opportunity
02:38 to really step forward and engage with industry.
02:41 That based on the latest figures provided to me by MCMC,
02:46 5G adoption has seen a marked decrease.
02:50 In November of 2023, we saw a take-up rate of adoption
02:54 of about 12.5%.
02:57 And as of end January, we have reached an astonishing 29.9%
03:03 adoption rate in Malaysia.
03:05 [APPLAUSE]
03:08 Will newer technologies like this
03:11 widen the gap between SMEs and perhaps some of those
03:17 that can afford to deploy this kind of technology
03:20 and infrastructure?
03:22 This is where business models come into play.
03:27 These are completely commercial considerations.
03:29 Of course, on the side of government,
03:31 we have had various policies for greater adoption.
03:35 Previously, what was announced in October of last year
03:38 was digitalization grants or soft loans
03:42 via some of the banks that can help businesses adopt
03:48 some of the newer technologies.
03:50 So I think as we prepare for budget 2025,
03:55 some of these considerations can be brought
03:58 to the attention of MOF.
03:59 And we hope that with the support of industry,
04:02 with the support of some of the other agencies and ministries,
04:05 we can help to bridge some of this gap
04:09 between the so-called bigger players and the SMEs.
04:13 I think it's very important, especially in light
04:16 of our NIMP direction, our new industrial master plan,
04:21 where digitalization is one of the key facets,
04:24 one of the key features that we have to prioritize
04:28 to increasingly make our industries more complex
04:35 and therefore produce cheaper, better,
04:41 more desirable goods for the rest of the world.
04:43 So I can see, I see the deployment of this kind of technology
04:47 requires some, perhaps some new business models
04:51 as well as some assistance from government for adoption.
04:55 But what exactly, how exactly the government will assist,
05:00 we have yet to discuss, but we are prepared to listen
05:04 to industry, to understand the needs, the requirements,
05:08 and then we can work from there.
05:10 So today we're just seeing the technology for the first time,
05:12 and I encourage industry, SME, to come and witness
05:20 over the next few days that this play is here
05:24 so that they can then have further conversations.
05:27 I would like to ask how many companies participate
05:30 in MWC Barcelona and what are the objectives?
05:34 So, alhamdulillah, all Telco companies in Malaysia
05:40 are together in the Malaysia pavilion at MWC Barcelona.
05:45 And this is the first time we have a pavilion,
05:51 and this is the first time all Telco companies are together.
05:55 And we have a few other companies,
05:57 I don't have a list of them at the moment,
05:59 but the delegation of this group,
06:04 which involves Telco companies and a number of other companies,
06:09 this is the biggest presence, insyaAllah,
06:13 at the MWC Barcelona event so far.
06:17 [silence]
