00:00 >> Tough start to the season, losing both double headers.
00:03 >> Yeah, well, we squandered two good starts.
00:06 That's probably the most frustrating thing.
00:08 We get quality starts, which is always nice.
00:10 But bullpen obviously is disappointing today.
00:14 I don't know, we gave up four home runs, I think.
00:16 Some of the lead off walks are just detrimental when you're playing NCAA
00:21 regional type teams, like four pitch walks, three two counts.
00:26 And then obviously, I think the frustration and the offensively,
00:29 we just didn't run the bases the right way, left some runners on base.
00:34 And squandering anywhere we got a chance to put up a huge crooked number and
00:38 really take over the game, they run out of freshmen there.
00:41 He did good, but we're about to put the game away right there and
00:47 we don't make it happen with the bases loaded, so just frustrating.
00:51 >> Speaking of the base running,
00:53 what did you think of the overall effort out on the base of the pads today?
00:55 It seemed like there were a couple instances where they weren't as poised as
00:58 maybe they should have been.
01:00 >> Yeah, not everybody's 100%.
01:02 You always have some guys that might not look like they're running as fast as they
01:06 can, but you still can run the bases the right way.
01:10 And so plenty of game notes for two games, things that we have to address,
01:15 areas we can get better as coaches, but at the end of the day,
01:20 these guys gotta do it.
01:22 And we had our opportunity, so that's what's so frustrating.
01:25 The fine line between winning and losing, we come out on the losing end both times.
01:30 >> Sebastian's start, it wasn't the prettiest start,
01:33 a couple of lead off hits, a walk, but
01:36 still seemed to stay tough even after giving up those two runs.
01:39 >> Yeah, I will say, cuz I think the UConn game is kinda tit for tat offensively.
01:45 I thought Indiana State clearly had better at bats than we did.
01:48 It was very impressive what they did with two strikes, very impressive.
01:51 I mean, they made Gungor work.
01:54 Now, did he hit his spots, and was he as sharp as he could be?
01:57 Maybe not, but man, he competed.
01:59 He gave us a chance.
02:01 I mean, that's what's frustrating.
02:02 Like I said, you squander two good starts, and we've got a talented bullpen.
02:06 Obviously, walks and the ball leaving the yard is not the recipe.
02:12 >> I'm gonna double back on that base running one more time, Dan.
02:15 On the Bible ball in the outfield out there with Keelan trying to take second and
02:19 Benson trying to come home, can you walk through what you saw in that play and
02:22 what you would have liked to have seen happen instead?
02:25 >> There's no excuse.
02:27 It's a two out hit.
02:28 I mean, we're going on a two out hit.
02:30 I'm not sure why our runner wasn't ready to go on a two out hit.
02:35 I questioned him cuz he stole second, and when the ball went in the center,
02:38 he didn't go to third, which we usually go to third.
02:41 But sometimes that center fielder will keep you, so I questioned.
02:45 But yeah, I don't know if he forgot the outs or poor base running.
02:51 I don't think really, Keelan, he doesn't know that the guy's not scoring on that.
02:55 So we talk about take two, try to run in their face, two out of the box.
03:00 I don't really think he did anything wrong.
03:02 I'm just not sure what JT was doing on that.
03:07 >> What did you think out of Devin Webster and his start in the second game?
03:10 He looked good in his four innings, but he pulled him after,
03:12 I think it was 68 pitches, was that because- >> Yeah,
03:14 I think it's just probably a little bit of his history and
03:16 building him up to be a starter.
03:18 He's always been, I mean, for a couple years, he was a really good 30 pitch guy.
03:23 And it's gotten better, late last year and this fall.
03:25 And so what we got out of him felt like, man, that's a great start, and
03:30 let's let the bullpen take over.
03:32 And it just didn't work out, it didn't work out in our favor.
03:36 Just again, when you're playing NCAA type regional teams,
03:40 you're gonna get exposed.
03:41 So but that'll happen in the ACC as well.
03:44 You play like that, then you're gonna come out on the losing end.
03:47 >> And after that, Corbett was the first reliever out.
03:49 Is he transitioning to more of a middle inning relief, or
03:52 is that just a situational thing?
03:53 >> Just right now, especially the first month, just get out.
03:57 Just run out of the bullpen and get out.
03:58 So I mean, if you get to control your own inning, great.
04:01 If you gotta come in with runners on base, well, there's only four games a week.
04:06 So if you got 15, 16 pitchers, there's only four guys that are gonna start.
04:10 Everybody else, you gotta come out of the bullpen.
04:13 And I thought we've done a good job of preparing these guys.
04:15 I mean, really, coming out of the bullpen and getting that experience.
04:20 But it's different when the lights are on.
04:22 You gotta, we just didn't do enough.
04:26 I mean, at the end of the day, it's nobody to blame but ourselves.
04:29 We just didn't do enough.
04:31 And give credit, I won't take anything away from Indiana State and UConn.
04:35 They earned it.
04:36 I mean, they didn't throw away at bats late.
04:39 I thought we threw away at bats today.
04:41 We went through some innings where guys didn't look like they were ready to hit.
04:44 Threw away some at bats.
04:46 But they get two solo jacks, they're late.
04:50 They weren't throwing away at bats.
04:51 I mean, we got outperformed today.
04:54 So we gotta wear it and turn the page and try to get better.
05:00 >> You said you can't win the national championship in the first weekend.
05:02 Got a game tomorrow, obviously you probably wanna get that win.
05:06 What do you wanna see the team accomplish tomorrow besides-
05:08 >> You gotta play better.
05:09 We still, we'd love a quality start by Liggett, and he usually does.
05:14 But the bullpen's gotta be better.
05:17 We've gotta be better in the batter's box.
05:19 We've gotta run the base.
05:20 I mean, it's not rocket science, and it's not super easy.
05:26 I'm not gonna act like it's, but as coaches,
05:29 I'm gonna make it clear we're not gonna allow that.
05:33 But as players, you gotta be accountable.
05:35 You gotta take ownership.
05:36 You can't allow that to happen.
05:39 You can't allow the mistakes.
05:42 Just not older players, base running in our program, there's no excuse for that.
05:48 >> You had talked about just getting out there and getting outs.
05:51 In the first game, Carrabaugh was exceptional.
05:53 Was there any talk before the seventh inning about running him out there to
05:57 start fresh before you brought Riley back out?
06:00 Or how did that conversation go?
06:02 >> I think Riley is durable, strong.
06:08 He started in his career.
06:10 When you run these guys out there, you're usually probably getting them one time.
06:14 So you'd like to, 20, 30, 40 pitches, whatever you're gonna get.
06:19 So plus these guys, they get in a rhythm, they get in a feel, and
06:22 they get command of their breaking ball.
06:23 But you gotta come with it.
06:27 You gotta come from the bullpen with it, right?
06:29 And we had a guy or two today didn't come from the bullpen with it, and
06:33 it caught up to him.
06:35 So it's just, our goal is to put these guys in a position to succeed.
06:41 But we trust them, and we're gonna run them out there.
06:46 But they gotta believe, and they just gotta be committed to getting better.
06:52 I think that's my challenge, that's my goal.
06:54 Can't feel sorry for yourself, let's just be committed to getting better.
06:57 >> Yeah, great.
