00:00 Greece's parliament approves a bill allowing same-sex civil marriage on Thursday, February
00:06 15, giving same-sex couples the right to wed and adopt children.
00:11 Greece is one of the first Orthodox Christian countries to allow such unions.
00:16 This comes after decades of campaigning by the LGBT community for marriage equality in
00:21 the socially conservative country.
00:23 Although members of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' center-right New Democracy Party
00:28 abstained or voted against the bill, it gained enough support from the leftist opposition
00:33 in a rare show of cross-party unity.
00:36 The bill was approved by 176 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament.
00:42 But the law doesn't overturn obstacles for LGBT couples in using assisted reproduction
00:47 methods.
00:48 Surrogate pregnancies are still not extended to LGBT individuals, but the bill recognizes
00:53 children already born through that method abroad.
