00:07 So all set for pro fight number nine for Umar Khan.
00:17 It should all be feeling pretty familiar for him by now.
00:20 His cousin Hamza Shiraz topping the bill tonight.
00:23 He's always looked up to him and he wants to be back at ringside looking on to support later.
00:29 First to business here and it's in very familiar surroundings.
00:33 His first four pro appearances all came at the Copper Box.
00:37 We make no secret of the fact that Mikhail Velasco is not here to win.
00:43 He'll be trying to win, trying to put his career into a different frame altogether,
00:47 but it's not been happening very often I'm afraid.
00:49 Now lost all the last 12 in fact, including in December against Royston Barney Smith.
00:59 Stopped in the third round and he was down in round two before that outclassed.
01:04 And it's a kind of yardstick for Khan for us to judge him, how he goes about the task against Velasco.
01:10 He started nice and relaxed.
01:12 Barney Smith sets a very high standard of course Richie, doesn't he?
01:15 Yes, he does. He's a quality kid, Royston Barney Smith.
01:19 And he took Velasco out in a spectacular fashion.
01:24 But for Umar Khan here, the key to this contest for him Paul is not to try too hard.
01:31 Just let his boxing flow.
01:33 You know, he hasn't got a knockout yet on his record and that will probably hurt him deep down.
01:37 He'll want to prove that he can punch a bit and get a few stoppages.
01:41 But at the same time he doesn't want to try too hard.
01:43 Because what I've seen from Umar Khan, he's a decent boxer.
01:46 He's got lovely skills and he's just got it'll come.
01:49 You just got to be patient, break the opponents down with the boxing skills
01:53 and then hopefully those stoppages will come.
01:55 But I like what I see up to now from him.
01:57 He's really easy on the eye, that's for sure.
01:59 Last time out he had Yen Kasaito down and very nearly out in the sixth and last round.
02:04 But he couldn't claim the stoppage.
02:07 No need to get hung up on that.
02:12 Perhaps another useful yardstick, Rich, for our viewers tonight
02:16 as we get going with this featherweight contest is to check the BoxRec.
02:20 Very respected ranking system.
02:23 And among the UK youngsters, the winner in our opener, Masoud Abdullah,
02:30 started tonight in sixth.
02:31 Maybe he's risen a place or two after that impressive victory.
02:35 Umar Khan here, 17th.
02:41 He started this contest very well, that jab to the body is nice.
02:45 What I like about Khan is sometimes he'll just take a backward step
02:50 just to maintain that gap and bring the opponent onto the shot.
02:53 So there it was there, that little step backwards.
02:56 So this is nice boxing, work behind the jab, frustrate the opponent,
03:00 make him come forward and then try and bring him onto the heavier punches.
03:05 But the skill and the work is done with the lead hand
03:08 and the frustration then hopefully creeps into the opponent
03:11 who comes forward and you can bring him onto those better shots.
03:14 Again, look, that little back step, that's nice boxing there from Khan.
03:18 Good stuff.
03:19 We might see a very clear indication in this fight
03:23 why a fight like this at this time is so much more valuable
03:26 than rounds and rounds of sparring.
03:28 That's the end of the first.
03:29 [CROWD CHEERING]
03:32 Hmm, million dollar Whopper contest.
03:45 I can top that.
03:46 I can top that.
03:47 Hey, you can top that!
03:49 You bet!
03:51 Really? Avocado, bacon, hollandaise.
03:53 Hollandaise?
03:55 Pickles and sport peppers.
03:57 What? Corn chips!
03:59 Brisket and bark.
04:01 I can top that.
04:03 Bacon, egg and cheese Whopper.
04:04 Pizza Whopper.
04:05 Creating your Whopper, your way, could win you a meal.
04:09 And here's Big Joe.
04:10 The juggernaut still hugely popular despite the setbacks of recent times.
04:15 Life's ups and downs, he's lived them.
04:17 Certainly in the ring, but set to go again on March the 16th we're told.
04:21 Against Qas Ali.
04:23 And hopefully get rolling again.
04:25 Yeah, good to see Big Joe back.
04:27 You don't become a bad fighter overnight because you've had two losses to the same guy.
04:32 Obviously, Zili Zhang has got Joe's number at the moment.
04:39 But certainly Joe, I'm looking forward to seeing him come back.
04:42 Umar Khan is settling in nicely.
04:48 He's not under any pressure.
04:49 Velasco is keeping a very respectful distance.
04:52 The object of the exercise, I guess, for Mikhail Velasco is to get the distance here, Rich.
04:57 Get the six rounds and wait for the phone to ring in the morning to say the next job is on March the 16th.
05:03 Yeah, exactly.
05:04 To get through this.
05:05 Got to keep that guard nice and high and keep that head moving.
05:10 He's walking on to probably a few too many.
05:12 Good work again from Khan.
05:14 Setting him up behind that jab.
05:16 Adjusting the feet and then bringing him on.
05:19 Just some good punches.
05:21 Would it be fair, Richie, to ask if we might see a little injection of pace tonight from Umar Khan?
05:29 He's got to be confident about getting the result.
05:31 And he has been building a winning record.
05:35 But is it more about injecting pace rather than trying to stop a man?
05:40 Exactly.
05:40 I think you've hit it spot on there, Paul.
05:42 If he goes through the gears and gives the referee, gives him a decision to make in terms of, you know,
05:50 does he get his opponents out there because of a stoppage because he's going through the gears?
05:54 He's hitting him with too many punches.
05:55 If he's just one pace at the moment, everything's going his way.
05:59 But at some stage, yeah, you would hope they would go through the gears and, you know,
06:02 double up the attacks and switch the attack here and there.
06:05 Threes and four punch combos.
06:07 And like I said, make that referee make that choice.
06:09 But this is good stuff again.
06:13 Boxing on the inside, switching from orthodox to southpaw there.
06:15 That's a good punch again from Khan.
06:18 Making Velasco work a little bit harder after that brief interlude with Lee Every.
06:23 All in a day's work for the Colombian.
06:27 He's based in Spain these days, travels Europe, lives out of a suitcase.
06:33 2023, five appearances in Italy, two in France, one in Belfast when he lost to Kurt Walker.
06:42 And then Royston Barney-Smith to close the year.
06:47 I think he's sensing the stoppage here.
06:49 Poor Khan, he's working well to the body.
06:52 I think Velasco has took some good shots.
06:55 His feet come square there.
06:56 Look, you see, he's starting to take the punches, both body and head.
07:00 So again, dominant from Khan.
07:02 You just hoped that he would sense that.
07:04 I thought he was earlier on.
07:06 Again, working with that uppercut.
07:09 He looks confident, Khan.
07:12 A sense that the stoppage is possible.
07:14 He's upped the tempo slightly in this second round and got some reward for it.
07:18 If he goes back to the corner, comes out and does it again, he'll get his hopes up.
07:23 Hmm. Million dollar Whopper card.
07:25 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:27 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:29 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:31 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:33 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:35 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:37 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:39 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:41 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:43 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:45 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:47 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:49 I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
07:51 Million dollar Whopper contest.
07:53 I can top that.
07:54 I can top that.
07:55 Hey! You can top that!
07:57 You bet!
07:58 Really? Avocado, bacon, hollandaise.
08:01 Hollandaise?
08:02 Pickles and sport peppers.
08:04 What? Corn chips!
08:07 Brisket and bark!
08:09 I can top that!
08:11 Bacon, egg and cheese Whopper!
08:12 Pizza Whopper!
08:13 Creating your Whopper, your way, could win you a million bucks.
08:17 Can you top that?
08:19 This is a home from home for one of the stars on the show tonight.
08:22 Indeed, one of the stars of British boxing, Anthony Yard.
08:25 Who gets to work in what we all hope will be a great 2024.
08:31 So, so close to the ultimate glory twice in his career already.
08:36 We were tipped off, Richie, that Josh Boatse might be making an appearance here tonight at ringside.
08:46 So that will add some spice later if it happens.
08:48 Yeah, absolutely.
08:49 Had a good win, didn't he?
08:51 Last week against Dan Aziz.
08:53 Terrific contest from both boxers with what he come through it.
08:56 But this is good stuff now from Khan.
08:58 He's going for the ear ball.
08:59 Doesn't he look good?
09:01 Just needs to keep on pouring it on.
09:03 Velasco took a rather jittery backward step twice there.
09:06 Backward across the ring in a straight line.
09:08 This is when a little bit of composure is needed just to maintain the gap.
09:13 Just keep punching.
09:14 That's a cracking shot downstairs.
09:16 We felt that's right above us.
09:18 Even if he's not awfully heavy handed, Richie,
09:23 if he hits with pace and accuracy, that can do damage.
09:28 Yeah, pace, accuracy and volume of punches.
09:30 You're at a stage now where the referee is ready to jump in, Paul.
09:33 So three or four unanswered shots.
09:35 This is where you put the combinations together.
09:37 You maintain the gap.
09:38 You've got to concentrate and get over the line with the finish in terms of a stoppage.
09:44 That's the last thing that Velasco wants.
09:46 But he needs to be careful here because obviously if he is stopped,
09:49 he could be laid off for a few weeks, certainly in Britain.
09:53 And it looks more and more likely.
09:55 I won't say he's one punch away, but Umar Khan has cased his man very well indeed.
10:00 It's a great uppercut.
10:01 And it's a terrific night's work because it is stopped
10:04 and it's a very compassionate stoppage indeed by Lee Avery.
10:08 But it was only going one way and he's probably done Velasco a favour.
10:11 That is a tremendous performance and an uplifting victory for Umar Khan.
10:17 It's his ninth overall, but before it became a hang-up for him,
10:22 it is a stoppage victory.
10:23 Well done indeed.
10:25 Yes, good performance there from Umar Khan.
10:28 It was punch-perfect, wasn't it?
10:30 Great variation in his work with the uppercuts and the hooks,
10:32 the straight shots as well.
10:34 He sensed that the finish was there.
10:35 He went for it, maintained that gap.
10:38 And it's his opponent with some real big punches who probably could have fought on all night,
10:42 but the referee had seen enough.
10:44 And I think it was the right call from the referee there.
10:46 Khan, what a lovely right uppercut that was from him.
10:49 And the referee had made his decision then to jump in after that right uppercut.
10:54 But good work from Khan earlier on as well.
10:57 Good performance that ball.
10:58 Very confidence-boosting performance.
11:00 Rich, when they actually sit down on Monday to look at it again,
11:03 maybe what they should take most from it was the variety in his work.
11:06 Variety, yes.
11:07 Exactly.
11:08 The uppercuts, the hooks to the body.
11:10 And he put it all together very well indeed.
11:13 And he sensed when his opponent was weakening, which was impressive too.
11:17 Ladies and gentlemen, here is the official time.
11:25 One minute, twenty-nine seconds of round number three.
11:28 Our referee, Dean Every, stops the contest.
11:32 They're going to put him by way of technical knockout.
11:35 And still undefeated, Uwe Kahn!
11:45 Hamza Shiriz will be hearing that backstage.
11:48 He may have had an eye on it.
11:50 I don't know on his way here tonight,
11:52 but he'll be well pleased to see young Umar, his cousin, perform so well.
